Speak Your Piece

Tell us what’s on your mind. No need to give your name.

I would like to respond to the comments made in last week’s paper concerning Burdine Elementary and Jenkins school system. Someone made a comment about sending their child with a $10 bill to the Burdine book fair. The child came home with a $3.99 book and no change. I have children that attend that school and we purchase books from the book fair. I know the librarian personally and know that she would never cheat or overcharge a child unless it was an honest mistake. Most people don’t know, but the librarian handed out donated books to the children who didn’t have money for books or even bought some children books with her own personal credit card. If you have a problem, you should go and talk to her and work it out instead of calling in a nasty comment like you did last week. That librarian has done more for that school’s library than any of the other librarians have. There was also another comment concerning the Jenkins school system wanting a new building. I too am concerned with this. Even though the superintendent said this will not raise taxes I just don’t believe that. I will say, however, that one of the comments was not true. Not all buildings in the district received a new roof a few years ago. When I pick up my child at Burdine I still notice brown ceiling tiles in the hallways, so clearly that school didn’t get a new roof. I think it’s a shame that the school taxes were never dropped after the high school was constructed. The taxes were supposed to be dropped years ago but we have never seen that day and probably never will. I would be excited to see my children enjoy a new building but think that other problems in the school system need to be addressed first. I hope that we see BIG changes during the next school board election especially hoping that the chairman is voted out. Our school system could use some changes in the upper management positions beginning at the very top. I like the Jenkins school system and think that things are improving. I am glad my child goes to Burdine school. It is a great school.

To a certain person: Just because you were left ‘everything’ in the will doesn’t mean you are going to get everything. There is a thing called probate. Google it. You might learn what you did this past weekend is illegal.

.

Thanks to the caller from last week for the list of cheating Democrats. However, none of them are running for President. In fact, I wish George W. Bush had gotten the same treatment Bill Clinton did in the Oval Office. Maybe it would have mellowed him out enough that he wouldn’t have taken out his inadequacies on the hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi and Afghani citizens he slaughtered. I noticed you left out the rest of the corresponding list of ‘family values’ Republicans who’ve been caught with their pants down. Is that because the affairs of the Democrats you mentioned were also different in that they were with members of the opposite sex?

.

To a certain person: You are my special angel and I love you.

.

I have watched a good friend throw her career away and I have watched her lose her health. She threw her kids away. She threw her marriage away and lost all of her belongings. She threw her whole life away for a man. She threw everything she had down for this man. He has ruined her life, the kids’ lives and everyone else around her. I’d love to see her straighten up and get her life back in order.

.

If you don’t have health insurance and want to make sure you never have it, vote Republican this fall. They are fiscally responsible and could balance the budget and cut our national debt much faster and easier if poor people who are sick or injured would just go ahead and die and no longer be a burden to taxpayers.

.

I’ve learned one thing through this power outage. AEP sure wouldn’t be prepared for a real natural disaster. We have been without electricity for 36 hours. We’ve got candlelight and barely enough heat to keep us alive. I have more than $200 worth of food that has gone bad. AEP sure didn’t care to raise our power bills, but where are they when we need them? AEP, step up your game.

.

So Kentuckians vote overwhelmingly to re-elect a Democratic governor whose platform was centered on permitting the state’s residents to vote on whether to legalize casino gambling to help our horse racing industry, then three months later the Republican candidate he beats defeat the bill to put the question on the ballot? When did the Republican Party decide to declare war on horse racing?

.

I would just like to know how the snake man can tromp through the woods, lifting big rocks looking for snakes — even jump on a trampoline — when he says his back is too bad to work. There are hundreds of men working in the mines that have much worse injuries and ailments than he seems to have. My Dad worked in the mines and kept food on our table for 50 plus years. He had lots of injuries but he felt he had an obligation to take care of his family and that’s what he did. He didn’t have a motorcycle, fourwheeler, new truck or any of the other ‘fun’ things, but he loved and took care of us. He didn’t rely on help from the state or government. He should get off your snake loving butt and take care of his family.

.

Cops, you all took the wrong ones to jail the other night. You ought to have taken the ones who lived there. They sold drugs all Sunday night and kept our neighbors awake. This little man in the wheelchair never slept a wink from the cars going in and out. Then when they got their drugs they called and had their friend put in jail like he robbed them. If you all would do a little more searching, you would find out that the head leader of it got the poor boy to come from another county and then had him put in jail.

.

I just wanted to say something about the problem this place seems to have with electricity and water. I have lived in a few other places in my life and I have ever experienced these kinds of problems. It seems that these people are always working on something, but every time you see them they are always standing around on the side of the road not doing anything. I haven’t really found anything these people know how to do down here. They need to change that saying country boys can survive to country boys can live on welfare. The old same points of just being lazy and stupid. I’m not impressed at all.

.

To a certain store in Whitesburg: It is kind of a wonder how some people can keep their jobs because the manager is their cousin and all they have to do is walk around and act creepy. They don’t really do any work. All they have to do is show up every day and keep their job when others can’t. Keep it in the family.

.

This is a concerned citizen. I am 65 years old and I recently had a heart attack. Now I have pneumonia. When the power went off, I contacted the power company and was informed the power would be back on by four o’clock the next evening. After that I was told it would be Feb. 24. After that I was told they no longer had my name on the list. I called back and asked why. They said being as I am the only being in the home and the only person being on that road, they could not get to it when they promised. To make a long story short, I believe that somebody needs to take over the power company who would do a better job. They decided only to do for areas where more than one person lives in that area. What about the elderly? They told me to go stay with my neighbors. I told them I didn’t have any neighbors. I have no car. I have no transportation. It didn’t make any difference to them. As long as it is just one person living in the household, you might as well say dig a hole and crawl in.

.

All you people there in District Two are going to have to learn how to take care of yourself like I do. I want to thank you for voting for me though, but you are going to have to learn how to take care of yourself like I do.

.

Hello, cousin Pryor. I am glad you get The Mountain Eagle. Talk to you later. Bye.

.

To the one who put in Speak Your Piece about me coming to the head of the creek and giving you my nose: I guess that is why I try to plow a garden with it and you know who this is — the one in Cow Hollow.

.

What has happened the Republican Party I grew up knowing as a child? We’ve somehow replaced the Eisenhowers and Rockefellers and their grand ideas with bigots of low class and poor education. The latest example of why I no longer vote Republican in national races comes from Florida, where today’s ‘freedom-loving’ and ‘get government off our backs’ GOP representatives are trying to pass a bill requiring every state worker undergo drug testing. How is that bad, you ask? Well, the bill applies to every state worker except members of the Florida state legislature. Our party of Lincoln has been taken over by selfserving hypocrites.

.

If you are not watching ‘The Big Bang Theory’ on television, you are missing one of the funniest shows that has been on TV in a long time.

.

The most recent study that has come out on diet sodas is that they raise your risk of heart attacks and strokes by about 45 percent. This is a real vindication for me because I have crusaded against this toxic food additive for about 10 years. A lot of people thought I had lost it, but I did the research. I knew the natural field had this information and the mainstream media is just now reporting it.

.

I want to wish a certain guy a happy birthday on March 9. I love you, baby. Love, Alexa.

.

Hey, big M.P. It’s called the subjunctive mood not the subjunctive mode. You need to check yourself before you go around trying to correct others.

.

How can Grandma put her photo on Facebook and advertise herself when everyone knows what she has been with?

.

To the person who is whining, crying and complaining about the Jenkins school getting a new roof put on and all the new work done: Talking about do we need a new $ 25 million building. You know that sometimes you have an old car and you have to put a new set of tires on it. You can do a little work on it and finally after a couple of years you think that it isn’t worth it to keep sinking money into it.

.

If playing with your kids on a trampoline, riding four-wheelers and going on camping trips makes anyone from the Appalachian hills afraid to be from here, then something is wrong. This one person commented that they had friends and family who asked if that is what we all do and he said no. Well, that is what we do. I think getting out and playing with the kids on the trampoline is a neat idea.

.

Happy 21st birthday to my little soon-to-be country star cousin who celebrated a birthday on February 25. You are legal now so take advantage of it. It doesn’t last long. In a blink you will be singing about Geritol and Medicare. We just wanted to tell we love you so much and are so proud of you. You are a very smart and sometimes spontaneous and driven man. Good luck in whatever path you may take. We will always love and support you. Love, Tosh, Chris, Jay and Ian.

.

Happy birthday to my favorite auntie in the whole world, Glenda Tolliver, whose birthday was February 28. You are a wonderful person. I am so blessed to have you in my life. I honestly can’t think of how it would be without you. You have a heart of gold. I will always cherish everything you have done and continue to do for me. You have always been there for me for the good and a lot of bad. You stuck in there with arms wide open. I thank God for sending me to a wonderful family. You are heaven sent. I may not always show it, but I love you so much. Thanks for being by my side. I hope you have a wonderful birthday because you deserve it. Love always, Boo Bear.

.

I want to be signed up for the backwoods, crazy hillbilly dude who plays with his kids on a trampoline. Is this all we do? No, we do other things. Some people deer hunt. Some ride fourwheelers. Some go golfing. We do all kinds of things. Come to Kentucky and find out.

.

The man who is 70 years old and says nerve medicines are the culprits for all overdoses and pain pills aren’t is just mistaken. Actually pain pills are way more powerful, and you are more prone to overdose on pain pills than you are nerve pills. Nerve pills can be dangerous when taken in excess and mixed with alcohol as with most anything can be. Really, pain pills are more dangerous and more people overdose and die.

.

Since everybody is wondering where I am parked, I am parked in the front yard. It’s not an invitation to come by and race your motor or generally aggravate me.

.

May we treat one another with respect, honesty and care, for that is the only way we will ever grow together. May we always try to be sensitive to one another’s joys, sorrows, needs and changing moods, and realize that being a loving family means sometimes not understanding everyone all the time, but being there to love and help them just the same. Thank you, Bradley Tyler.

.

You think you’re smart for talking trash to me in Speak Your Piece, then you’ll call him to see if he’s angry. Ha, ha. We have a big laugh with what you say. You are a big joke. You all don’t have enough common sense to let sleeping dogs lie. You all are the stupidest people I’ve ever heard of. Ha, ha.

.

Congratulations to WMMT FM for having the new radio show that features Dr. Breeding talking about health care issues. Both that have been on so far have been very informative, especially the latest one about the prescription drug programs that save lots of money for people of all incomes. I had no idea such programs existed, so thanks Dr. Breeding and his two guests for bringing that to our attention. I won’t be calling in with a question, but I will be listening every fourth Monday night of the month at 6 p.m.

.

Well now, birthdays for the month of March. Here goes: Cassel Boggs has a birthday on the 1st, Sumoe Barron’s first boirthday is on the 5th. Moving right along, Selma Lou Banks, our cousin, has a birthday on the 14th I think; our pastor Joe Brown and his wife Linda Brown’s anniversary is on the 17th for 39 years; another kid at church has a birthday on the 25th, as does Marvin Boggs. Lonnie Pack, our youngest brother, has a birthday on the 29th. Thank you. Stanley Pack.

.

Kentucky doesn’t need television programs such as ‘The Snake Man of Appalachia’ and ‘Turtle Man’ to make us look ignorant to the rest of the world. Our elected representatives do more to make us look like morons than a TV show ever could. Take this former Daniel Boone Parkway for instance. Each time I am on this road I get sick all over again when I remember that our former governor, Paul Patton, erased the name of one our country’s true heroes, Daniel Boone, and replaced it with the name of Hal Rogers, a politician who has done little to distinguish himself on the national stage. Such ignorance would never happen in any other state in our union. This is the same Paul Patton who is now leading the effort to take millions of our coal severance tax money and use it to pay for making Pikeville College a four-year state university. Congratulations, Mr. Patton. We never thought you could do worse than dishonoring the name of a true American hero like Boone, who helped put our nation on its path to greatness when he built the Wilderness Road through Cumberland Gap in 1775. But you did.

We raised my best friend’s kids together and now we are not friends. She had a good husband and she cheated on him and left him for a guy who is no good. If he were he wouldn’t have gone out with a married woman. She took her teenage son to his house while she was married, and he took him an grabbed his arm and squeezed it and told him if he made trouble for him with his mom he would make it real hard on him. Now they finally are divorced and the child lives with the dad. He won’t talk or see the mother while the mother still sees the guy. She told her son he could love her with him or not. How could anyone put another person for before her child? I know the father. She needs to think of the child instead of herself. And she wonders why I’m not her friend anymore? A kid should come first always.
