Speak Your Piece

Tell us what’s on your mind. No need to give your name.

I was at the post office and saw someone put a calico cat out of a car and drive away. The poor little thing was terrified to be abandoned in a busy parking lot on the first of the month. It was pouring rain and she was getting wet and cold. I tried to catch the little cat, but she was so scared I couldn’t get close to her. She then crossed the busy road and went over to the Mc- Donald’s parking lot. I tried to bribe the scared little kitty with food and sweet words, but because she was so terrifi ed all she would do is run. I do hope someone was able to give this beautiful little animal a good home. I hope the person who did this terrible thing can’t sleep for a month. There is no excuse for doing something like this with all the Humane Societies and animal shelters in our region. Don’t people realize that animals that are set out are disoriented, frightened, and at high risk to be run down, killed or maimed? How would you like to be transported to a strange place and left all alone to fend for yourself? Worse yet, would you do this to a small child? This cat was quite young and probably missing its family. If I had been able to get the license plate numbers, I would have reported it. I don’t think it would have done much good though. Shame on the person who did this. Shame on you for being so thoughtless and heartless. I hope you are never in a position like this poor animal has been put in, though it would probably serve you right.

The judicial system stinks. To fact that Chum Tackett got 10 years probation and only has to pay back $340,000 is a disgrace to the people of Letcher County. If this were some boy from a poor family who stole $500 in cash he would be locked away for 10 years. Guess it depends on who you know, who you can pay off, or who is scared of you. Why not sell his cars, trucks, home, vacation home and other property and use that money to add to the $340,000? Maybe that would cover what he really stole. And to the ones who were in on this rip-off with Chum: You are just as guilty. Thou shall not steal. May your chickens come home to roost, Mr. Tackett. What goes around, comes around.

.

Dear Mountain Eagle: Is it possible to do a story on how the Letcher County Schools determine school closings and early release. I am concerned for the children and parents. The decision makers that call off school for inclement weather leave me bewildered. I have traveled in severe weather for a less than 45 minutes’ notice to pick up my child for early release because of weather. I have also sent my child to school under the threat of expected severe weather. The school system gave us the option for work missed because of weather to be completed online. Why isn’t that option used instead of endangering children and parents during early release transportation? I request my name not be used because of backlash to my children who attend school in Letcher County.

.

To a certain person: You are a liar. You said the white car would not be back. Well it was there. That’s why I have not meet you or been by. I don’t want to see you anymore. You said you just felt sorry for her. You are a liar.

.

I just saw the results of the trial of the case where that young boy killed that fellow in Jenkins. I believe the man got killed because he had his guns out was threatening the other guy. I live on Bill Moore Branch and I walk anywhere I want to and I don’t pack a gun. I think that man went walking and looking for trouble. I also think the man who was convicted of the shooting was intimidated by the cops.

.

I have $790,000 worth of nothing. Where does that leave you? Right in the backyard.

.

What idiot would vote for Obama for president? Would it be someone else wanting welfare?

.

There should be a law requiring people to get dead dogs off their property when they have neighbors living next to them. There has been one lying on somebody’s property for three days and they haven’t moved it.

.

Speculators are driving the price of gas and oil up. Speculators are just Wall Street con artists. There is no less gas now than there was before, but they are raising the price to make a hefty profit. These con artists are taking advantage of us in the name of capitalism.

.

I loved those Bible trivia questions. Here are some of my favorites: What are the names of Jesus’s sisters? How many female angels are in the Bible? In which books are Santa Claus revealed to us? Which one tells us how to select and decorate Christmas trees? Where does it discuss the Easter Bunny and why we should hide eggs?

.

The legislatures in both Kentucky and West Virginia are passing stringent laws about drug-using coal miners. Drug-using coal miners have yet to cause a disaster, but there are no laws being passed against those responsible for mine disasters. It is always the poor working miner. The poor miner who uses drugs is banned for life while the people who cause the disasters walk free.

.

This is to the people who called me a neighbor: I feel the same way about you as I did about the people who lived there before you. I would have sent them a thank you card for moving if I had known their new address. If you moved I wouldn’t even do that for you.

.

Is it true a conspiracy was in put in place against an employee of the county extension office who was run off for being socially liberal?

.

I would like to wish two very special people a happy birthday. They are brother and sister. Cayden Isaac will be eight and Kiera Isaac will be seven. Granny wishes you both happy birthdays and I hope you have lots of fun. I hope you get lots of great gifts. Happy birthday to both.

.

Our college religion teacher said that it required drugs, alcohol, religion or something similar for a man to go down in a coal mine knowing how near death he would be, knowing that if the stuff at the top didn’t get you, the dust would. Now they want to take away the right to drugs, but they haven’t made any mines any safer. They talk about mine safety, but after a disaster they pass no laws, except to get at the poor miner that needs something to get encouraged enough to face the fact that mine safety is a hoax.

.

I want to send heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the person or persons who anonymously helped pay my bills during my battle with cancer. May the Lord bless you and keep you. Thank you again.

.

I am a 53-year-old woman and I live in a big house by myself. Back on December 8 I was in a horrible car wreck. I was in Holston Valley Hospital in Tennessee for two months. Now I am in a nursing home. I can’t walk now, but may be able to in about a month, says the doctor. I want to go home. I really miss home. I need to hire a woman to help me until I get back on my feet again. There wouldn’t be much to do except fixing me a bite to eat and bringing me sodas and doing light housework. That is it. If interested, please reply. Thank you.

.

I’d like to know why the mayor of Jenkins and the city council pass ordinances and don’t enforce them. They put up speed limit signs and don’t enforce them. The state police need to come in here and investigate what is going on in Jenkins.

.

To a certain caller: You see that was my whole point about the Snake Man and I agree with you, whoever you are, about his being able to jump on the trampoline and lift up the rocks while complaining about his bad back. Well, I’m sure he is on disability draw by now, but even if he is not there are plenty of other jobs he could do. Why should we feel sorry for him? And he does make us look like dumb, ignorant hillbillies. I wish they would take that show off the air.

(Animal Planet has had the show on hiatus for at least a month.)

.

I have been quiet about the Mark Sturgill murder trial, but I would like to speak my piece about that now. I knew Mark all my life. We did many things together. We were good friends. We went to school together. The things that have come out of this trial and the hurt that has come to this family through the defense is something that I think is just a shame. Had Mark seen it coming, he would never have left his gun in his holster. To me, it was just a cold-blooded killing. It seems to me if you are going to kill somebody, Letcher County is the best place in the world to do it. That is all I’ve got to say about it.

.

To the Letcher County Central High School boys’ basketball coach: Our boys could have done so much better if you would have just helped them this year. I want to apologize to the boys as for the season they did have, because they know they would have had a much better record. We had some good boys, so I just wanted to apologize to them for you.

.

After reading about the little slap on the wrist that was given to James F. ‘Chum’ Tackett after he was caught stealing thousands of dollars from the sick and elderly and mentally-handicapped, all I can say is they better hope I don’t get called for jury duty in Letcher County. After this miscarriage of justice I will never vote to convict anyone for any crime related to theft in Letcher County. Our court officials should be ashamed. This plea agreement should have been rejected by the judge for being too lenient on Mr. Tackett.

.

To whom it may concern: I be living in the ghetto all my life and I be writing and talking in the subjunctive mode, so if I were you I would not be making statements in a public forum until I be having mastery of the subject. You be having a good day. I say you be knowing who this is. Do I be right?

.

Grandma must really be getting hard up when she has to advertise her picture on Facebook. Shame, shame, shame.

.

To a certain city councilman in a certain town in Letcher County: My aunt just called me and complained about the noise outside her house. If anything happens to that house or to my aunt, you and your nasty friends will be the first persons who will be looked at. Did you get my message? I hope you did, because I know who you are and you better stop it. Knock it off or I will give you more trouble than you have ever had in your life.

.

To a certain woman: You are my special little lady and I love you. You are my angel.

.

To a certain person: I know it is early, but I want to wish you a happy birthday on April 2.

.

I live at Pratt Branch. If it rains we don’t have electricity. If it snows 10 minutes we don’t have electricity. If the wind blows we don’t have power. If a stray dog passes by and pees on a light pole we don’t have power for three days. The least the power company could do is give everyone who lives in Pratt Branch a generator.

For most people, St. Patrick’s Day is a day of parades, parties, leprechauns and green beer. But just as Christmas is about more than commercialized fun, so too does St. Patrick’s Day have a deeper meaning. St. Patrick’s Day began as a religious holiday honoring St. Patrick, a holy bishop sent to Ireland in 433 A.D. by Pope Celestine I to draw its people into the fold of Christ’s universal church. Upon his arrival at Ireland’s shores, St. Patrick encountered many setbacks and persecutions by the superstitious Druids who had employed magicians to maintain their sway over the Irish race. Despite severe trials, St. Patrick was able to convert all of Ireland and conquer paganism. He is thus credited with driving the Celtic ‘snakes’ out of Ireland. St. Patrick is credited with many miracles and is responsible for the building of several Catholic schools, monasteries and churches throughout Ireland. He is known for his powerful expositions of the principles of the Catholic faith. He even employed the ordinary, little, three-leaved shamrock plant to teach people about the Blessed Trinity. He was called to his heavenly reward on March 17, 461. St. Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose total love, devotion and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. Sincerely, Paul Kokoski, Hamilton, Ontario (Canada).

Dear Speak Your Piece: How can they plaster the Peanut Butter Man all over the paper and the guy from McDonald’s? What happened to the woman and two male employees from the fast-food restaurant who faked the robbery? How come this was not news? Are they better than the other guys? I guess they will go to treatment and be back in a few months. How nice.

.

To a certain person: I think of you every day, and I love you. No one knows but us. That is garbage. Every dog has its day. Go figure. I’m good with numbers.

Transparency has never been considered at any level because the voting constituents are not asking questions prior to electing individuals that serve you and me. I observe at the local level that many are elected on personality, not considering issues that are important to the local, state or federal government. The size of our government money that is spent and constituents’ input into how our money is used is never an issue. Accountability is not part of our government at the present time. I disagree with the idea that public would not understand or even examine the account records. I want to list some terminology for you to reminiscence as to why there is no transparency in government today: the ole buddy system, cooking the books, limited audits at all levels, special interest groups, lack of constituent input, complacency in your job, double/triple dipping the system, too much status quo government, lack of visionaries, after the fact government, self interest, nepotism, no consensus from the public, lack of patriotism, breakdown of law and order, overburdened court system, scales of justice, voter apathy, greed exceeds need, don’t blow my cover. During this time in our history with unemployment, people losing their jobs, foreclosure on their homes, no health care and indications the government will attempt to prosecute these that are in the above category if they cannot afford insurance, what kind of government would promote this idea, especially under a representative democracy? Some compassion is shown for the less fortunate, but this will not pay health care, or buy the food, shelter, or clothing that sustains life. God knows about the good, the bad, and the ugly that is happening in our world today. The terminology that is listed relative to transparency is being used in some local, city, state or in the national government. The fact of the matter is that the public has left the political world open for dishonesty because they have failed to exercise their voting rights at the polls. In the state elections last year only approximately 30 to 33 percent of registered voters exercised their voting rights, which tells you and me that 63 to 67 percent of the voters did not exercise their voting rights.

The severance tax should be sent back to the individual counties where the coal was mined inclusive of other mineral resources. The proponents of the UPike situation should reflect on the past history of the coal industry. Think about all of the miners that have suffered from black lung or were killed in the mines. The legal profession assisted miners who suffered from black lung, but lawyers got a big chunk of the finances. A monument is located at Hemphill ( Jackhorn) that lists the names of those miners that paid the ultimate price in Letcher County. Do you remember this song by Tennessee Ernie Ford? ‘I load 16 tons and what do I get, another day older and deeper in debt. St. Peter don’t call me for I can’t go because I owe my soul to the company store.’ Many people that have reached the pinnacle of success in the coal industry or political world may have forgotten that each county in the severance tax region has designated projects to finish that are incomplete at this time. I tune into KET, and none of the politicians representing the severance tax areas are questioning how the severance tax is used. I think it’s unusual that since the November state election there has been no mention of the $17,000 television that was supposed to have been in one of the political offices in Frankfort or no mention of political trips being charged to the state budget. It seems out of the ordinary that only one state official wanted an audit completed when he took office.
