Editor’s note: Four comments related to next Tuesday’s primary election for the office of Letcher Circuit Court Clerk — two in favor of each candidate — were omitted from this week’s edition of Speak Your Piece. Because the race between incumbent Margaret Nichols and challenger Deborah Gibson had not been a subject in previous weeks, it would be unfair to both candidates to use comments that could not be answered until after the election. Thank you to all concerned for understanding.

What a poor clean-up job on Pine Mountain. Early last week, there was a spill of mine sealant in buckets on the south side of the mountain on U.S. 119. Don’t know what company is responsible, but a lot of the buckets and lids were left beside the road and tossed over the guardrail. Where’s the county government on this? Where’s our PRIDE program?

.

This is to the arrogant, egomaniac slime ball who calls himself The Letcher County Drone. No queen bee would want someone like you. The only insect you could attract would be a green fly that has been buzzing around an outhouse or a slop jar. I’ve seen your type; all you want to do is stand in front of a mirror and comb your hair and put on dime store costume jewelry trying to look pretty. You’re too sorry to work and live off your mommy and her SSI check. Your poor old mommy has to take in the neighbor’s laundry to try to make ends meet because you tell her you can’t find a job in this bad economy. You’re even too sorry to take a bath and when you go out on the prowl you splash on so much Old Spice you smell like a cinnamon goat. No real queen bee would want you; only another sorry, smelly skank would give you a second look. Personally, I am a real woman and I want a real man, a workingman. I got me a man who wears them blue work clothes with the orange stripes. Nothing is sexier than my man who comes home with coal dust on his face, a paycheck in his hand and the sweet smell of honest perspiration on his manly body.

.

I would like to apologize to the lady whom I accidentally bumped into last Saturday. Let me explain. I had a half-pint of corn liquor in my coat pocket and every time I ordered a drink I put about a dram in my beer just to spike it up a bit. You see, I know I ain’t too smart, but after I’ve had a few drinks I get to thinking I’m smart. Also, I don’t have a very good alcohol tolerance and there is usually some lady close by who says something like, ‘Young man, I think you’ve had enough to drink.’ Stuff like that triggers my stupidity. To make a long story short, the bouncer began asking me about a designated driver, so I excused myself and walked outside. As I was leaving I accidentally bumped into this nice lady. I got a good look at her and I said, ‘Lady, you’re ugly.’ She said, ‘Get away from me, you’re drunk.’ And me being the smart aleck that I am, I said, ‘Yes, I’m drunk, but I’ll be sober tomorrow and you’ll still be ugly.’

.

I had to have surgery a few months ago and I can’t get any help with my medical bills whatsoever. You’ve got these deadbeats who are able to get out and get a job and work, but are too sorry to do so because they want to lie in bed all day and play video games. And they can get a medical card? Get real. How come they can get some help and I can’t? The only thing I want is some help paying my medical bills and get my health lined back out and then I would get a job. I wouldn’t sit on my hind-end like others do.

.

I have learned something this week. When someone doesn’t love a child it doesn’t matter how hard you try to change them, you can’t. They have to change themselves. My mom doesn’t love me. Her boy friend comes first and she blames me becouse i hate him.

.

My private pension fund promised me for 25 years that when I got old enough I could get my pension and there would be no problem. While I was paying in they were really nice to me, but when I got old enough to want my money they didn’t want to give it to me. They give it to me when they take a notion, not when they agreed to. I can’t collect or get an attorney, because the attorney says I have legal recourse because it is up to them as long as they pay me whenever they take a notion. That’s the conservative way of the business. The business is run for the benefi t of the business and not for benefit of the employees or the customers.

.

People used to object to paying a big price for poor products. When they had the electrical rate hearings, nobody complained that the stupid electricity doesn’t work half the time. It goes off more than it ever did and now they want more money for it. Tell them if they get the electricity fixed we will pay. Until then tell them until they can get the electricity fixed to where it will stays on, they shouldn’t be given the rate increase. Also, the electricity has gone off more here this spring than it did the whole time I was in high school. God bless you.

.

To the people who live in the HOMES low-income housing near Letcher Elementary School with the tall grass, weeds and junks: This is an eyesore to our community and to Letcher Elementary School. Maybe HOMES can do something about this.

.

To the girl who drives the gray Volkswagen bug: You are so beautiful, but your boyfriend doesn’t know how lucky he is to have you. Your blonde hair and blue eyes are so beautiful. I think your boyfriend needs to step up to the plate and treat you like a princess.

.

To the love of my life: You hurt me so much when you broke up with me. We met on Valentine’s Day and I fell in love with you and I have loved you ever since. You said you loved me, but I never thought you wanted to break up with me. I guess you just got tired of me and wanted somebody else. I will always think about you. You were a great person and we had some great times together. I will always remember that.

.

I think the people of McRoberts have found out partly why their water bill is so high. There are three or four water trucks that go up through here, just one after the other. I don’t know what they are doing, but they just keep going one right after the other. Looks to me like that would be a big expense. I don’t think it is right for the water customers to pay the expense for these boys to ride these trucks all over McRoberts, especially where I live. It is a sight and I wish the water company would check on this and report to the city council. There is a lot of waste going on at the water company.

.

I want to know from what school our county judge and magistrates graduated. They can’t even put their heads together and collect unpaid garbage bills, and now they’ve got the audacity to want to turn it over to a contractor and raise rates. Where do these clowns come from? What rock did they crawl out from under? They can’t even get an ambulance service on Cumberland River.

.

It looks like Whitesburg Mayor James Wiley Craft would take some of that alcohol tax money and fill up some of those potholes. If the budget is too tight to use the money to fill them in, then use some of those empty beer cans to do the job.

.

Jenkins would probably not be ‘cash strapped’ if Mayor G.C. Kincer hadn’t spend money buying and remodeling the new City Hall. I can remember the city was always in good shape under mayors Pud Shubert and Charlie Dixon. It was never cash strapped and the police drove new cars. The fire department, schools and everything else were in good shape. Now everything is down the tube.

.

To the fat woman who works at Letcher Manor Nursing Home: You need to lose your attitude with people. Thanks a lot.

.

Come on, Letcher County Fiscal Court. Wake up. You say you are collecting 90 percent of all the garbage of people who live in Letcher County. Well, you are not. I bet you aren’t collecting 50 percent. I live in a place where the two people above me don’t pay a garbage bill. I know because I asked them. I pay my garbage bill, but the one who lives below me also doesn’t pay a garbage bill. I asked. If you pass this new law forcing people to accept this new garbage service you will never get one bag of garbage from me. It will go somewhere else. Get out here and do your own digging and pick up all the people who are supposed to pay a garbage bill but don’t. Then you won’t lose any money with your garbage system. Get everybody in the county to pay a garbage bill, not just half. Get somebody to sign them up. Quit doing nothing.

.

I go to many yard sales, especially at the VFW. If they would lower their prices, people probably would buy more. Who wants to give $2 for a blouse? Thank you.

.

What do you think about our president now? He is for the same-sex marriage. I think somebody should get him out of there. That is what I think.

.

How does somebody who is only 26 have more than 20 years’ experience in art? I guess finger paints and crayons count, right?

.

I realize that my small pension check is a task for my private pension plan to mail to me. The first day of the month was faithfully promised to me as the day my check would be mailed for 25 years. I got my check on the 11th. It was the slow mail that did it, according to the pension people. However, it was postmarked by the mailer on the 8th. Does this sound like it’s the mail slow or my private pension plan lying to me again?

.

What has happened to the idea of personal responsibility in this country? So now the prosecutors in Indian Hill, Ohio, a neighborhood full of very wealthy people in Cincinnati, are trying put one young man in prison because he sold psychedelic mushrooms to another young man who was killed while walking along a road when he was run over by a third young man who apparently has fallen asleep at the wheel. Because they couldn’t charge the driver, who had nothing in his system and didn’t even know the other two guys, this outof control prosecutor just wanted to charge someone with a crime even though this is just a case of terribly stupid decisions made by young people. This is even more maddening than prosecutors in Kentucky now charging people with manslaughter if they sold drugs to a person who ended up dying of an overdose. No one ever twists the arms of anyone else to do drugs or drink alcohol. People over 16 should be responsible for their own bad decisions. After all, life happens.

.

Shorty, we have been together for about nine months now. I have to pinch myself sometimes so that I know I am not dreaming. This has certainly been the best time of my life. Your kind ways, your loving heart, how you worry over me have given me the strong desire to make a life beside you, for us, for the rest of my days. I love you. I have faith in you and in us. I asked and you said yes. Now we just need to decide when and the life we both want will be ours. I promise you will never be lonely again. Honey, there is no difference between June 1 and August 15 to me. I am ready when you are. Love always, Squeaky.

I heard my brothers at my local Baptist church complain about how Congress is cutting programs that affect the truly needy in our community. Do you reckon they will ever figure out that conservatives are greedy and don’t care about the needy? Do you reckon they will ever figure out those people don’t care about me and you?

.

To Letcher Circuit Judge Sam Wright: This is James Roberts’s daughter, a detective out of Tampa, Fla. Judge Wright, you gave the Collins girl who was with the guys who beat that old man with a hammer nothing but a slap on the wrist. You are keeping Angie Mays of Jenkins in jail and she did nothing but call 9-1-1 after a shooting. She was offered a plea bargain that would have her serve 50 years in prison. The girl would be 70 before she got out. She might as well just die in there. She had nothing to do with the killing of Walter Johnson Jr., and I will stand on a podium in the courtroom and say it. The girl is getting a wrong deal. All Angie did was call 9-1-1 to straighten everything out. Thank you, and please let justice be done.

.

I was so sorry to hear that a certain doctor is leaving a certain medical care facility, but I sure am glad to see the nurses and receptionists leave.

.

To a certain woman: Your ex-husband is just like wine. The more he ages, the sweeter he gets.

.

Would someone please tell me why the Jenkins prom was held at The Inn at Norton, Va., with a small dance floor. They didn’t play any up-to-date music. It was all Eighties music. The kids had a lousy time. What should have been one of the most memorable nights of their lives turned out to be one of he most disastrous. I know they were trying to do the Godly thing, but this was not the night to try to reform the kids. It has been a disaster all year. They should have gone to New York City on their senior trip like Letcher County Central instead of Gatlinburg.

.

Would the guy who talks about his angel every week please give us a break?

.

When did the Whitesburg American Legion start becoming a hotel for some people? It makes you think.

.

I think the people ought to speak up and let it be known how they feel about some big garbage outfit taking over and doubling or more the price of our garbage bill. There are some people who aren’t able to pay it. There are people out of work who can’t help being out of work. There are poor people who can’t afford to pay that. There are some people who are living on food stamps. Not everyone is living high on the hog like some of them over there making these big laws. I can manage my garbage bills I guess, but I never have that much garbage to go out. I think people really ought to speak out about this.

.

To Whitesburg ARH: Be sure that you get your $17 million out of Coventry- Cares of Kentucky. They don’t need to be doing you all like that.

.

The state legislature needs to pass a law giving longer prison sentences to copper thieves. More time keeps them off the streets longer.

.

If everybody in Letcher County would start paying their garbage bills and if the people in charge would start taking them to court and make them pay their garbage bills, we wouldn’t have to worry about franchising it. It’s awful that the county won’t take them to court and make them pay when everyone else is paying. If they would make the others pay, we wouldn’t even have to worry about the garbage bill being raised.

.

If the City of Jenkins is so hard up for cash, how can it afford to waste more than $420,000 on a swimming pool? Somebody needs to wake the mayor up. He’s a dreamer.

(When did building a public swimming pool become a waste of money, especially when the project is largely being funded with money intended to be used for such purposes?)

.

CoventryCares and the state are getting together to drive the last union workplace out of business. Why else wouldn’t this be true? If a non-union hospital is getting paid and ARH isn’t, that is telling me that the state wants ARH out of business.

.

The Lord has many angels, but you are the best. I love you and you are my angel.

.

This is to the guy who works at the hospital: I see you are back at it again with every woman you can. You have already split up several happy homes. How many happy homes do you have to split up before somebody does something about it? Maybe someone should have a little talk with your wife. Maybe someone should deal with it themselves. Enough is enough. You need to take care of yourself and your woman and leave everyone else’s alone. Enough is enough.

Lexington Herald-Leader columnist Larry Dale Keeling recently elaborated on the 2012 session of the Kentucky General Assembly as a period for the perfection of the art of procrastination. Redistricting consumed their time, or this was their best excuse for doing nothing. Today, it is status quo for governments local and state. Remember the TV commercial a few years ago where the lady asked, ‘Where is the beef?’ Today, status quo governments can ask, ‘Where is the money?’ The General Assembly had an obligation to improve or discuss the bullying bill but they put this legislation on the back burner. I would venture to say that every school system in our state has bullying activity in some form. I worked in the educational field for 37 years. I’m under the impression if you are a good observer of preand primary-grade students, you can detect the actions of students by their socialization activities. The General Assembly had real people who had experienced bullying in their schools or communities to testify at committee hearings, but to no avail. They put this legislation on the back burner. I challenge some school administrators to pull this bullying school policy out of the mothballs and publish their info in their local newspaper. By the way, what happened in the Lee County incident where the 17-year-old boy on the school bus instigated problems for the fiveyear old boy? Is this bullying? Is there info in your state policy that covers this incident? The General Assembly was positive about making students stay in school until the age of 18 years. I heard a school administrator on a radio talk show recently and he was complaining about keeping students in school until they reach 18 years of age. He insinuated that he did not know what the schools could do for the students that would give them the incentive to stay until 18 years of age. Individuals that are employed in the school system in our state and their salaries are $100,000 plus and these individuals cannot improvise and restructure the curriculum with practical, hands-on activities. This statement was a summary of individuals when I was growing up many years ago, people that ignored problems or had no innovative ideas for solving problems. People would say, quote, ‘That person is not worth the salt that goes in his or her bread.’ Complacency is causing problems in our schools today. Individuals stay too long. Someone has to give them this message, ‘Shape up or ship out.’

.

Thank you, Judge Ward, for putting in a new site manager at the Ermine Senior Citizens Center.

My mom is so much happier now and will be going back to the center more. She feels at home now with her friends and not upset when she goes home. When I return to Letcher County, I will go to the center with her. Mrs. Baker is a wonderful lady and one of the best cooks in the county, is what my mom says. Thank you again and I am pleased that the lies will end now.

Magistrate Wayne Fleming is not a politician. A politician is a person who promises you he or she will do just about anything to get elected, then forget just who it is they work for (the people of Letcher County). Wayne is the only magistrate who works solely for the people of all districts. The only other magistrate that even comes close to working for the people of Letcher County would be Keith Adams. These two try to bring to the court something for the good of all of the people. The rest of the magistrates are just suck-ups to County Judge Jim Ward. Wayne Fleming, I thank you for your commitment to your office. I wish you were in my district. Unfortunately we have Codell Gibson. I agree with the statement made in Speak Your Piece about Codell being the worst magistrate that District Three has ever had. Codell promised a lot of things to get elected, but a lot of us are still waiting for the culverts, roads to be fixed, blacktop some of our roads. The other two magistrates, Bobby Howard and Terry Adams, need to start working for all the people of Letcher County as well. The people of this county hired you men for a reason, so why don’t you start earning your pay? As for Wayne Fleming’s discussions with ARH, I have also been overcharged and tried to work out problems, only to have my bill turned over to a collection department in Lexington, which they proceeded to turn my account over to the credit bureau department to destroy my credit. The people who work here in the local hospital are good, hardworking people. I agree with Wayne that ARH does not deserve any tax monies. They charge well enough for their services to keep the hospital afloat. My last remarks to Wayne Fleming are that you are sure a blessing and a Godsend to our county, and I wish you were in the judge’s office.

.

I am a concerned citizen of Letcher County and have lived here all my life. I never realized how ruthless one person could be to another until recently I was told that one of our candidates for Circuit Court Clerk was seen taking down the other candidate signs among other things. That is pretty low if you ask me. All that says is that this person must be pretty desperate to stoop to such tactics. Maybe this person needs to think about reading a few passages in that Bible that’s carried around. Voters of Letcher County, have you ever known of our current Clerk to be anything but kind and helpful to you and your families? Has she ever turned any of you away? Let’s keep the right person in the Clerk’s office. If you agree, let your voice be heard. Don’t forget to vote on May 22. Thank you.

.

To the person that cleaned and cut grass along Highway 1148 on Little Colley: Thank you for a job well done. Give yourself a pat on the back. Hopefully we will keep God’s earth clean.
