Dayton, Ohio here looking forward to the Powell River trip with his Whitesburg family.

The game wardens ought to be charged with wanton endangerment for turning bears loose.

.

To my favorite Yankee: I miss you and I would much rather be cuddling up with you every Thursday night.

.

Hey, there ditch crawler and dirt dauber. How’s it going? Better call the law or check with the radio squad and check what is happening.

.

This is to the lady who lives in the Colson area: I can’t wait until you leave town again so I can spend the night with your husband.

.

To a certain person: If you don’t leave your cousin alone I am going to call her and tell her what I saw coming out of her house with the armload full of stuff that you were carrying. You better just leave your cousin alone and let her live her life. She has let you live your life. Now let her live hers.

.

You know what makes me sick? All these undercover investigations where they send in young people who look like they are 45 and 50 and try to buy drinks and beer and then they bust the people who are trying to make a living and pay their taxes. This is sickening.

.

I need some information on Alma McCoy who married Cletis Patterson. She was from the Pikeville area. They lived in Ohio. I believe her mother’s name was Nancy. I need to know anyone who has information on her. Any information would be appreciated. Please write Carolyn Hall, P.O. Box 126, Jackhorn, Ky. 41825.

.

To a woman at Ice: If you would keep your nose to yourself, this world would be a better place if everyone would do that. That is what is wrong with Letcher County.

.

I thought it was against the law to smoke in a public place in Letcher County. I went to pay my electric bill and was not able to breathe because of the amount of cigarette smoke in the room. Then when I got in my car, my clothes stunk so bad that it made my car smell of smoke as well. I do not take any offense to people who smoke, but I think they need to have enough respect for the others and the law. Another thing, I’m all for teaching our children the ‘tools of the trade’ in order to train them for the future, but I’m hesitant when an eight-year-old is processing my bills.

(As long as the eight-yearold is processing bills on a computer, you probably have little reason to be hesitant. Many of them ‘get it’ when it comes to technology in ways older adults — self included — just can’t.)

In the 1940s, conservatives ran on cutting out Social Security and got beat. In the 1950s, conservatives ran on cutting out Social Security and got beat. In the 1970s, Republicans ran on increasing Social Security. In the 1980s, conservatives ran on reforming Social Security and got elected and cut Social Security. In the 2000s, conservatives ran on reforming Social Security, getting elected and cutting it again.

I am responding to the person who said President Obama (if reelected) should crack down on welfare, food stamps, and SSI recipients. I am on SSI disability and food stamps. I am disabled because I have worked all my life to help support my family. I cannot help that I have developed over the years crippling medical issues. I only draw a little more than $600 in disability and $34 in food stamps. Think you can live on that? You can’t even buy water and bread for that. Druggies have ruined people getting help from their family doctors for pain medicine. Now I have to go to a pain center being only 74 years old. I think this is stupid. They could only investigate the ones who do abuse it. And as for the reelection of Obama, I would vote for a mule first. He has not done anything for this country during his four years in office. He admitted he was for the gays and lesbians (to have equal rights). God said it was an abomination in the Old Testament and New Testament. I agree with another writer in a different message — this country is going to hell in a hand basket. I am an educated person, having a degree in BM. I have never written to Speak Your Piece before, but please put this in the paper. The issues I spoke of are important. Please keep me anonymous. Thank you.

Our circuit judge sentenced a man to 30 days for smoking a cigarette and then another four months for saying something rude. I thought Soviet Russian style kangaroo courts went out of style decades ago. Someone needs to sell this judge a clue on the meaning of punishment suiting the crime. No wonder our prisons are overcrowded.

I ain’t had any loving in more than a year. If you would like to get up with me, you know who I am.

.

I am calling in about the History Channel’s great ‘Hatfields & McCoys’ miniseries that was shown last week. Not because I am a Hatfield relative, but I think it was one of the greatest things on television. I know some of the reviews have been bad, but I think it was really good. It stands up well against shows like ‘Lonesome Dove’ and ‘Roots.’ I hope it wins some awards.

A Baptist church in Louisville recently ordained an openly gay man as a minister. Now when will eastern Kentucky’s Baptist churches come out of the dark ages?

.

It has been years ago since my babies have been gone. I hope God enjoyed watching them die. I hope he and Satan had fun winking back and forth at one another. It destroyed me and the little woman. I hope God and the devil enjoyed what they did to us.

.

I think these people out there who are mean to kids will get what they deserve. God won’t let them go unpunished. They can hide and lie on earth, but God knows all things and a lot of them will be struck by sickness. God will take care of them all.

.

To a certain supervisor: You are still at it. You think you have everyone fooled at your job. You are still messing around with all the women. You got caught with one already and split up a happy family. You drive around in your vehicle like you are something big. Eventually you will get what you deserve.

.

It is unprofessional for clerks at the Whitesburg hospital to tell people the hospital in a lawsuit with CoventryCares insurance and that they wouldn’t pay their bills and that is why we are going to have to change our insurance. How else would we know this if someone at the hospital hadn’t told us? They deny it, but I still think it is very tacky.

.

Drug dealing has been going on for years here in Long Branch on Linefork. Law enforcement is a joke. We get no help from them at all.

.

I get a kick out of reading the comments from people who say God will punish us a nation if we give human rights to gays and lesbians. As most psychologists and psychiatrists will tell you, people who are hung up on issues such as homosexuals having the right to live in peace don’t really feel the way they do because they fear God or care about what God thinks. Instead, they write and speak their hate because deep down inside they have lived their lives being afraid that they too might be homosexual. Don’t take my word for it, or the words of the professional brain experts for that matter. Do your own research and see what you come up with. Listen to those who speak of hate toward others and think about where they are coming from. Pay especially close attention to some of the so-called preachers who have feminine traits.

.

The Internet and its various forms of social media are debilitating people’s ability to engage others socially on a face-to-face basis, I believe. It’s providing a platform for people to escape accountability for their words, actions, and even their own supposed beliefs, ideas, opinions, etc. How do people rationalize themselves as being mature adults when they refuse to accept any responsibility at all for those things they claim to believe? To me, an adult — especially a ‘real’ man — does not hide from the things he claims to believe or feel firsthand as an individual. Those are his beliefs or opinions so why would he be afraid to own up to having and stating them? The Internet is undermining people’s sense of accountability, like I said, and it’s eradicating any interpersonal socializing avenues. Notice how people seem to pay less and less attention to you when you speak to them? Notice how most of them have their nose in a screen or the cell phones in their hands? Every moment is spent updating statuses or messing with something cyber-based somehow and they’re quickly becoming oblivious to what is transpiring around them. They are dwelling in online realms detached from the physical world here and are instead engrossed in the virtual world that is serving to dumb them down and dull their senses. This wears down their faculties and means of speaking to others face to face and ultimately removing them altogether from any sense of personal accountability. It just isn’t respectable or mature of you, me, or anyone else to have the ‘courage’ to say something anonymously online that we would not dare to state openly in public or to someone’s face. Grow up, people. Major Victory.

.

One person’s trash is someone else’s pleasure. I’m glad you got my trash. I was finished with him. How does that make you feel when you go to bed with him at night, knowing I used him up?

.

It’s really funny that I get probation for two years for public intoxication while a certain blonde-headed girl gets preferential treatment. This is pathetic.

.

We had a great time with you, Uncle Jack. Love, Anthony and Amber.

.

A certain person ruined her whole life when she tried to keep up with her cousin and best friend when she was young and pregnant.

.

To all the girls in the Letcher County Jail: What you going to do?

.

Has anybody heard about anything the ‘Friends of Coal’ or ‘Faces of Coal’ people might be doing to help our unemployed coal miners make ends meet? Now would be great time for these organizations, along with ‘Coal Mining Our Future,’ to step up and show they care about our working miners as much as they care about helping the largest coal companies avoid the environmental laws. These organizations have collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in the name of working coal miners, mostly those who make their living underground. Shouldn’t they now be offering some of that money back by helping the miners who have lost their jobs to natural gas? Perhaps those in leadership roles at Friends of Coal, Faces of Coal and Coal Mining Our Future would let us know through Speak Your Piece what it is they are going to do to help my husband and our family and others like us. Will the leaders of these organizations continue to make six-figure salaries while our miners are losing their jobs daily? With my husband now out of a job, I guess I ought to just be happy we at least got t-shirts we can wear from Coal Mining Our Future. Beats a burlap sack, huh?

.

I live in Bill Moore Branch and I am curious about the boy who sits back and lets his girlfriend work and keep him up. If he wants to get rid of her, I’ll take her any day. She works herself to death. He doesn’t have a need for a woman like her.

.

I’m just wondering if the wannabe from Beckham Bates Elementary School is going to try to run everything at Letcher like she tried to at Beckham Bates.

.

To a certain person: My love for you is like a circle. It will never be broken. You are my angel and I love you.

.

In the more than 60 years I’ve been reading The Mountain Eagle, I have never read a more beautiful article than the one Nancy Lou Holler did on her ‘Decoration Day’ story. It brought back many memories and tears to this old hillbilly’s eyes of my growing up on our 100- acre farm in Cane Branch Hollow. I only wish I could write that well. I will keep the article forever.

.

To the Letcher County Board of Education: Why is it exactly that you continue to let a known drug dealer, wife beater and child abuser work with children? I cannot believe that you people who are in charge of our children’s education and wellbeing allow this man to be anywhere around children. When will you people wake up and do something beneficial for the youth in this county. A Very Concerned Parent.

.

So you tried to snoop into my personal affairs, huh? Hit a dead end quick, didn’t you? I told you so. Now you’re frustrated, huh? Jessie James once said, ‘They can’t hang you till they catch you’, so I live by the code of the West, ‘Leave no forwarding address, and no tracks behind.’ When a suspicious looking car drives by my boat, I just assume it’s the law, a bill collector, or bounty hunter. Next morning I’ll be 40 miles down the lake. I have to sneak in and out of Letcher County because of those warrants Ben Buster has on me. You got three things wrong in your newspaper article though. I am not a burden on anyone, I am not poor, and, in your case anyway, people can be ignorant without even trying.
