Speak Your Piece

Tell us what’s on your mind. No need to give your name.

Call 633-7508 from 9 am Tuesday to 9 am Friday.

In addition to the telephone and the U.S. Mail, The Mountain Eagle accepts comments to Speak Your Piece by electronic mail. Our address is: mtneagle@bellsouth.net

I’m a 70-year-old woman, and you would think someone would have enough thinking sense that when a copper telephone wire continues to be stolen from the same place some genius would take a camera and put it on a darn tree and catch the thieves. They’ve stolen it three times in the same place. I don’t understand.

.

To a certain person: I miss you, baby, and I wish you would call me. I love you. I miss the good times that we shared together, and I will always think about you every day and every night.

.

To a certain person: You are the most beautiful angel the sun ever shined on. I love you.

.

I would like to know why you can sit in Sam Wright’s court and every lawyer and everybody else who has to confront Sam Wright has to stand up, but Edison Banks can sit there and talk from his seat. He should have to stand up and talk to the judge like we have to do.

<i>(Are you really angry because Letcher Commonwealth’s Attorney Edison Banks doesn’t stand when addressing the bench or are you upset with him because his duties require him to prosecute someone close to you? If you’re seriously concerned over the former, then you might want to give Mr. Banks a pass since he has serious physical ailments in his feet and legs that prevent him from jumping in and out of his seat.)

I don’t know what to think about these women who smoke until they turn blue in the face and can’t even breathe. It looks like they would look at the television commercials about cigarettes. If that isn’t a good clue, what in the world does it take to pound it into these women’s heads what they are doing themselves? They smoke and smoke until they can’t, then run down to the hospital to get some oxygen so they can smoke some more. Women, don’t you have any dignity?

(Addiction really is a terrible disease, isn’t it? Unfortunately for smokers, nicotine is a highly addictive drug that can be, say the addiction experts, as hard or harder to kick than heroin or narcotic pain pills.)

.

I think it is a shame how our system works. You can get what you want done if you have the money or drugs or if you will do a little something. That is not right. Someone needs to do something.

.

A certain woman likes to tell everybody about her ex-husband and how he is trash and how she used him up in bed when she was married to him. She ought to tell the truth about how she is trash and how she used seven men up in bed one night when she was pregnant.

.

This is Judy Maggard responding to the person who keeps calling in about things going on at the American Legion: I have not called in and said anything referring to myself. Whoever you are, you need to come up to the Legion and tell us why you’ve got such a problem with the Legion. I never called that in and I don’t know why you are ragging about the Legion. Jealousy is a terrible thing. Evidentially, you are jealous. Why don’t you go off to a corner, lie down and rest?

.

I’m just calling to ask Whitesburg residents to please get out and vote next Tuesday, June 26, in favor of expanded alcohol sales for our town. If we don’t take advantage of this opportunity, we will never have any hope of developing any kind of tourism economy in our beautiful town. With the coal industry dying a slow death, let’s be careful not to throw away those jobs that legalized alcohol has been able to provide over the past three or four years. I would also like to say that I respect Magistrate Bobby Howard very much even though he wants us to vote no, but I also agree with Mayor James Wiley Craft that if our town is to continue to grow and prosper we must have this new law. Why should we keep sending our money to neighboring counties and states when it can help us right here at home?

.

There are three reasons why people dye their hair. They want to do it, they have the money to pay for it, and they don’t have to ask an idiot like you for permission.

.

To the person who keeps commenting on the American Legion being a motel: Why don’t you shut your mouth and have respect for someone who has lost their home and everything in it? It’s a shame that you don’t consider her feelings any more than to say things to hurt her and embarrass her. You ought to be ashamed.

.

I’m confused about our churches in Letcher County. There is too much politics in our churches and I thought the Lord said we are supposed to love everybody. And what gives them the right to talk about our nation’s President in church? Can someone answer this please? Have a blessed day.

.

I pulled into McDonald’s at 8:05 a.m. It is now 8:25 a.m. and I am still sitting here waiting on some coffee. Who knew it would be a 20-minute operation to get a cup of coffee. They advertise coffee, they sell coffee, and you would think they would have coffee at 8 a.m. If you have ever wondered if it is quicker to go inside versus staying in the long line in the drive-thru, it is not. Just stay in the long line. That is all they care about. They don’t care about people who walk inside and order. Geez, Louise.

Do any of you people who hate the Obama administration and the EPA for doing what the courts have ordered them to do concerning air pollution really believe Mitt Romney will make power plants switch from burning natural gas to coal if he is elected. If so, I have some oceanfront property I would like to sell you on Black Mountain. As a caller once said in Speak Your Piece many moons ago, if ignorance were bliss, Letcher County would be the most blissful place on Earth. Do any of you ever bother to read about what’s really going on? If so, then you might want to look this up so you’ll know the facts. This so-called ‘war on coal’ was started by the first President Bush with the passage of Bush’s Clean Air Act of 1990, which strengthened a law passed during the Nixon Administration in 1970. Twelve years later, the second President Bush tried to weaken his father’s law with his own ‘Clear Skies Initiative’ in 2002. After that, a number of states sued the EPA to make the agency enforce the 1990 law instead of the weakened rules of the ‘Initiative.’ The states won their suit in the federal courts and the EPA was ordered to do what it is now doing. I guess it’s just easier for some of you to blame a black man with a funny name instead of facing the reality that natural gas and a law passed in 1990 are what is really killing coal as a fuel for power plants. And by all means, don’t take my word for any of this. But please do Google the subject on the Internet and see for yourselves what the truth is.

.

June 22 will make three years since Kerney Brock was called home to be with Jesus. We miss him, but know he’s in a better place. Love you, dear brother-inlaw. From your sister-in-law Trulia.

.

This is to the person who put the little comment in Speak Your Piece about people dying their hair: Well, honey, haven’t you heard? It will get rid of all of the lice and dirt that is in your hair. Who knows, you might even find you a man if you wash away all the gray. And besides that, it is none of your business what other women do.

.

To the person who responded to my comment about God and Satan winking at one another: I’m sure you are a good person, but have you ever walked the floors at midnight and held a crying baby while it died? I hope not. I wouldn’t even wish that on the devil, much less on God Almighty. There is such a thing that if you haven’t been there and you haven’t done that, then you don’t know what you are talking about. You have no idea. I’m sure you are a good person. You have a nice day.

.

Since the coal business is leaving Kentucky, we’re all starving. We’re all going to lose our cars and our homes because it is already starting to happen. They need to attract businesses in Kentucky. Since no business seems to come to Kentucky, they better start thinking about trying to legalize marijuana, I guess, so we can grow marijuana and have an income. Our Governor isn’t doing anything and the Senate doesn’t seem to be doing anything. Obama is killing us. The EPA is killing us. Nobody seems to care. I guess when we lose everything, the electricity is turned off and we get ready to move, everyone else is going to move, too.

.

This is to my loving husband: We have been together 10 years. We’ve had our ups and downs, but thank you for staying with me through everything. You know whom this is from. I will always love you and I hope we will have 30 more years together.

.

To a certain person: You are of sound body and mind, but you can’t tell your face from your behind. One is a meathead. One is a weenie. Rock and roll alarms you, but not machinery. Come hell or high water I will win.

.

The Blackey City Park now has a good 10-foot basketball goal. I would like to thank some people for making that happen. I would like to thank Magistrate Keith Adams for finding it, bringing it here and putting it in the ground for us. Also, I would like to thank Luther and the inmates for digging the hole and putting it in. I would like to thank Wayne Caudill for storing it for us and for letting us use his truck and equipment. Thanks to all you folks, and I would like to invite everyone down to play some basketball.

.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the power company and especially Ken Little who came straight out after we reported a line down and some fallen trees near our home. He did such an excellent job and we want to commend him. Thank you!

.

This is to the stupid, self-righteous people who responded to the man who had called in the week before about his or her baby dying: Somebody replied and said he must have been a real bad person because the Lord looked down and took his babies for angels. It’s funny, because in my experience most families and people who have lost children have been good people. Most of your evil people don’t lose their children. Also, people don’t become angels when they die. You need to read your Bible before you talk. I can’t wait until some of you selfrighteous people get some surprises of your own in the afterlife, because you really don’t know what you are talking about. Your comment is similar to one else a couple of months ago referring to Gentiles as being non-Christians when the caller obviously didn’t even know what the word means. Gentile is simply everybody who is not Jewish. At that particular time all the followers of God were Jewish, so anybody who wasn’t was considered a Gentile. You aren’t even using the word properly. I just feel sorry for all of the rampant stupidity and ignorance. Maybe you might lose some babies or children of your own and maybe you might see what I mean.

.

I am old enough to remember how bad pollution was before President Nixon signed the bill that created the Environmental Protection Agency. I have been to countries that do not have good environmental protection and I thank my lucky stars every day that we do. I am very disappointed that our county judge/executive, who is also supposed to help enable our health and safety, would join the War on the Environment and speak in favor of pollution at a rally. Next election let’s vote in a county judge/ executive who cares about the people.

.

I am a young man calling from Pratt Branch. I am curious about people who live in automobiles and never stay home. If you live in an automobile, drive all the time and are never home, buy an RV.

.

To a certain person: You stay so drunk, you wouldn’t know rap from rock from ‘Silent Night.’ Apparently, your lovely sidekick is in a coma or else is hearing things that aren’t there such as voices. Have a good one.

.

This was written by a friend because I didn’t know if anyone else would write anything, but Shannoka Adams was a very good friend to me. I hadn’t been in contact with her for a few months before her passing in a Jeep accident over the weekend. I wish now that I had because she reached out to me from time to time, and I ignored her because I didn’t care for the company she had been keeping. I wish I only had a chance to have talked with her instead of letting petty differences get in the way of true friendship. She was truly an important person to me, a friend who stuck with me through good times and hard times. A lot of people may not agree with the way she chose to live her life, but what they think or say has no importance to me. All I am concerned with is the fact that I lost someone dear to me, someone who had stuck by me through thick and thin. She was a warm, caring person just trying to make it through life the best she could. I will miss her greatly, regardless of what some may do or say. I will miss my friend, and hate the fact that such a young, beautiful life was taken from this world before her time.

I would like to take a moment to remind pet owners of the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. In every community there are homeless animals, and in the U.S. alone there are an estimated eight million homeless ones entering animal shelters every year. About half of these animals are adopted and, tragically, the other half euthanized. These are healthy, adorable pets that would have made great companions — pets who would have been your best friend, protector and comforter. I know many people believe that their pets’ puppies or kittens would never become homeless shelter animals, but every time the dog finds his way to visit the neighbor’s female dog or the indoor/ outdoor cat comes back home pregnant again, the result is a litter of puppies or kittens. Many people are surprised to learn that more than three million cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters each year. Spay/ neuter is the only permanent, 100-percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats. Not only does it help to control the pet over population problem, but it means increased good health, better temperament, and longer life for your pet. It also makes your life easier as you won’t have so much spraying, prowling, and rude behavior from an animal that has been spayed or neutered. Colettia Estep.

Dear Speak Your Piece: Many believe falsely that the earthly Church of Christ is the ‘only’ church. The Church of God is mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 2:14, and in 1 Corinthians 1:2. It doesn’t matter what church a person goes to on earth as long as they are preaching that God came in the flesh. When Jesus answered the Apostle John in Mark 9:4, He said, “For he that is not against us is on our part.” This salvation is a plan from God; a gift. Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us how to be saved! The local Church of Christ, according to history, was founded by Alexander Campbell, known as ‘Campbellites,’ and came out of the Baptist Church. Thank you.

.

Dear Speak Your Piece: There are many people who blame God and others for their ‘plight,’ but as free-will agents, we have the choice of making our own decisions. We should not blame God for the wrong decisions that we make. We are not puppets on a string that God directs as He wishes! Thank you.

I am writing concerning the statement that was made from the President in the White House concerning rights for gays and lesbians. I have the right to the freedom of speech, even though our liberal politicians are trying to destroy our constitution. I hope that The Mountain Eagle will print this letter in Speak Your Piece, as my writings are my responsibility and no newspaper or any other news media is to be held responsible for my writings to voice my opinions, and my choice to stand up for what is right for the word of God is true and will never change. I would like to quote the following verse from Leviticus, 18:22: ‘Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind: it is abomination.’ What was sin then is still sin today. God hates sin, and sin will still take you to eternal hell. It is a sad time in America when the elected politicians are promoting the same abomination that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for. God rained fire and brimstone out of Heaven and destroyed these cities. God is angry with the wicked every day. Psalm 9:17, ‘The wicked shall be turned into hell and all the nations that forget God.’ There is a God in Heaven and He knows everything that is said or done. He even knows the thoughts and intents of the heart. What this President needs to do is to repent and ask Jesus for mercy, for he has offended the true and living God and he has offended God’s people. God does not force anyone to serve Him. If people don’t want to repent of their sins and turn from their evil ways, then God will let them go and go to an eternal hell if they so desire. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Did you know that a Kentucky resident cannot sell a deer, turkey or fish mount they own — a mount you have already paid a fee for a hunting license and the taxidermy expense? Neither did I, and technically it is a gray area if you look at the law. This past February, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife raided my store and confiscated all my animal mounts (deer heads, turkey and fish mounts, etc.) antlers (including sheds) and a turtle shell that my antique dealers had for sale. The treatment we received was disrespectful. I do not personally own any of the items mentioned. The fish and wildlife agents claim I violated KRS 150.180. I have sold mounts in my store since 2003. I was given no warning and I have no idea why I was targeted. The law they cited talks about protected species. If you try to look up “protected” species online you are referred to the Kentucky endangered species list. My antique dealers did not sell or stock any animal on the state, national or world endangered species list. As a small business owner weathering this horrible economy, I have already spent thousands hiring an attorney to defend my wife and myself. We are charged with 31 counts each and cannot afford the thousands in fines that may result from this case. If the state is allowed to fine and prosecute folks like me this will be a lucrative side business for them. They will now raid other antique, consignment, junk, pawn, sporting, and bait stores as well as flea markets, garage, yard and estate sales. They will monitor online and newspaper advertisements and even the artisans and craftsmen cannot sell their work if they use deer antlers in their crafts. These folks will be raided and will have to pay hundreds to thousands in fines. Our rights are being violated by the State of Kentucky. Help me stop this by calling or e-mailing Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Commissioner Dr. Jonathan Gassett, 1-502-564-3400 or jon.gassett@ky.gov. I know that this hasn’t happened in your county, but it affects all businesses that deal in recycling and resale items. Sincerely, Riley Bright, Baw9901@yahoo.com.
