In the past year since my mother had to pay $20 for a handicap driver parking permit she has been able to use it only a very few times. Usually, the parking place that is supposed to be reserved for the handicapped has been taken by a young person that is very able to walk but is too sorry, or by a fat person who needs to walk but is too sorry. I have sat in the parking lot at Walmart and saw police there pay no attention at all at the handicapped parking violations happening in front of them. I guess they were just there to watch the good-looking women or men walking around and did not notice any handicapped people trying to get into the store. Enforcing this law does not get any publicity or extra money for the police I guess. If you are young but just stupid and ill mannered, please try another spot. If you are just fat and sorry, park in the right place and walk off some of the calories. Leave the handicap parking spots to the people who now have to pay for it, which is also pretty sorry on the government’s part.

I’d like to say happy birthday to the lady who lives in Dunham. I love her now and always will.

.

It amazes me how somebody can be so low, rotten and dirty and sell drugs in a church parking lot and think they are going to get away with it. The person who sells it lives in Doty Creek. He and the one he likes to peddle with don’t have any sense. They like to drink, party and cut down telephone wires. They try to get everyone to be their friends. They know how to talk their way out of going to jail.

.

The stolen plaques represented people who had seen extensive combat, and some had been prisoners of war. They had all seen the horrors of war, but they had prevailed and provided us with the freedom we have today. Their memory has not been honored, but disgraced, and this atrocity must be remedied by punishing the thieves and those who accepted the stolen plaques. The Veterans Administration and the federal government must be brought into this appalling situation for a thorough investigation.

.

September 11, 2001 still a heartbreaker after 11 years. I just hate to see that. I have been to Ground Zero. When you see the names on the memorial of the children who were in daycare there that day it will make your blood boil. I hope I am wrong, but I feel like in my gut the mainstream media for whatever reason is trying to suppress this event. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941 and it is a day that will live in infamy. It is like the news media doesn’t want you to hear about this anymore. You hear about it on this day, but none of the rest of the time. It is like it is being suppressed.

.

To a certain person: Rather than calling the VA you might be better off calling the AA.

.

To the person who wants to start a petition for McRoberts to leave the Jenkins School System and join the Letcher County system: I think you are on the right track. I would love to see a petition of this type. Why should we pay higher school taxes than the county and have such an inferior system? Scholastic achievement is inferior in the Jenkins system as compared with the county, facilities in the county system are much better, the county already runs buses to McRoberts, and we in McRoberts have no voice in the decision making of the Jenkins system. Of course from what I hear, in reality only the school board chairman has any input in the Jenkins decision-making process anyway. There has been a rumor that the McRoberts grade school will be closed and these children bussed to Jenkins. Does anyone out there know how to legally start the process of changing systems? Where we pay our taxes and send our children should be up to the residents of McRoberts. If after hearing all the facts the majority want a change, then we should make the change. Thank you.

.

To the person who said ‘People wake up’: I guess you are the perfect employee for certain coal companies — bigoted, poorly educated and not too bright. They love your type, the kind that believes all their lies, even when they are cheating on mine safety laws. The coal industry is down for two reasons. One is because the industry just ignored the law all during the Bush Administration, when they could have gradually come into compliance while the law was not being enforced and been OK now. The other is that the price of natural gas makes it a much cheaper alternative to coal. Other than doing his job as America’s president and chief law enforcement official, President Obama has done nothing to harm coal. And immigrants have nothing to do with your problems. Those belong to you.

.

All of us senior citizens at Boone Fork Senior Citizens Center would like a new building. Our old building is falling in. The floor is just about gone. We certainly would like that new trailer they have at McRoberts. They have two and they don’t use either one of them very much. We are in dire need of a building.

.

I am glad to see churches using only the King James Version of the Bible. Since King James was openly homosexual it must mean that they will, unlike so many others, welcome gays with open arms. What a wonderful development for such a normally backward society.

.

Follow the road in Pine Creek and you wind up in a drug haven. It’s being trafficked from Ohio and whole families are addicted. Traded with one another by neighbors — sold, used, grown and made. Not a place for children, which are involved.

.

The theft of the gravestone markers vividly shows some of the most prevalent characteristics of our county — lack of respect for almost anything, official ineptitude and indifference, a revolving door justice system, and a society driven by drugs. I am very apprehensive about the future when all the layoff s and economic collapse are really felt.

.

To the person complaining about the power company cutting limbs on their property: Six years ago they came and cut limbs on my property and they still haven’t come to clean it up. The last time they came to cut, I wouldn’t let them on the property and I explained why and they just walked away. I’m a Cumberland Valley Rural Electric customer. I don’t know if it is the same with the other power companies, but they do need to get on the stick with this.

.

This is concerning the person who said everyone who disagrees with his criticism of President Obama is the enemy. If he (assuming it is a he) had just a little brain he would know that our situation is not caused because of the current administration. The real cause is the Republicans in the House and Senate. They have just enough members to block everything put before them, including jobs. How could you possibly be for someone that says his only aim is to see that Obama is a one term president. That’s quite an ambition, isn’t it, especially on his first day in office? I know you are not the only one that feels the way you do, so all I can say is may God bless you and our country. You and other people that feel the same as you are the ones that need to wake up.

.

I have recently been run off the road twice by people driving under the influence. I got a good look at the woman driver who ran me off, and I think she was so stoned she couldn’t even see me. If you drive on any road in the county at any time, day or night, you are subject to be confronted by the same danger. Drug activity here is increasing on a daily basis, and this epidemic, this plague, is destroying our quality of life. I am sick of people making the excuse that this problem exists everywhere. Not anywhere close to this extent, it doesn’t. Officials — enforcement, prosecutors, judges, and UNITE — have failed, and it’s time to acknowledge this failure and try to get outside help. The locals are so involved and motivated by politics they are of little use, and the drug underground saw this vacuum years ago and have taken full advantage of it. We need federal help — now.

.

Revelation Ranch just keeps on fooling the masses. Never forget there are some of us that know you and will always have your number. Each time you quote the Bible, you heap coals on your own head.

.

To the person who told ATV riders to shove it: I do wear my seatbelt when I ride my ATV. I do have insurance on it and I pay taxes on it. I also pay full coverage on it. If the county would make a trail to keep people off the road, it might be different. So you can take your horse and break its back.

.

I would just like to ask if anyone else besides me knows that child custody battles are sometimes decided after payoffs are made.

.

I think I am related to people in all three of those cemeteries, as I imagine others are, and I don’t think anything could be more insulting to a people who revere their ancestors and their history than what has been done. Why do we have to tolerate this? This disgusting act, and all the telephone wire thievery, for that matter, would not happen if the thieves didn’t have a ready market. In addition to all the other problems of this place do we have to see a total breakdown of society and civilization?

.

A couple of weeks ago someone put a comment in Speak Your Piece criticizing LCCHS football coach Paul Rains. The editor then asked if a new coach doesn’t deserve at least a couple of seasons to get his system in place before he starts catching all kinds of heck. No one would have made that reply if they knew how this coach was actually treating the boys. It’s not about the fact that it is a losing season right now. It’s about the way he treats the boys and the names he calls them. ‘The General’ is what he is called. If anyone knew exactly how he treats these boys there wouldn’t even have been a comment regarding the comment. It’s about how some have quit and how some who loved football no longer love football, but because they have started won’t quit. Don’t question things if you don’t really know what is going on.

.

I sure have missed those good, hot meals since they have closed the senior citizens center over here at Colson. Why did they close it down for a couple of weeks?

.

I am the daughter of the ‘white-haired witch in the wheelchair.’ I also am in a wheelchair and I have to say to the person who wrote about my mother being the white-haired witch that I feel sorry for you. You must be a very ignorant and juvenile person to bash people with disabilities. You need God, honey.

.

I would talk about some of the facts left out of the coverage of the case of Harley Slone being charged with stealing bronze and copper grave markers. Slone is a sorry specimen of human to steal from the graves of veterans, and from his mother and grandmother. While it may have been edited from the film, I did not hear Sheriff Webb mention on the TV news where the stolen grave markers were found. Could this be because the owner of the salvage yard, Mitchell Wright, brags about the number of votes he can carry through family and associates? This may just be the case since he has been allowed to trash the community of Isom so badly that very few travel through it anymore for fear of flat tires. Various departments in Frankfort have been notified over the past few years, but no one has done anything about making Mr. Wright clean up his mess. The Mountain Eagle told the story the way it should have been told, except for maybe what they do not know about scrap buying and selling. I have sold loads of scrap myself, but I take mine to the other place at Isom because they pay more. They sort every piece of scrap into what they call short steel of three feet or less. You have the leastpaying metal like appliances, car panels, etc., then the copper, aluminum, brass, iron, and catalytic converters, which contain various costly metals. Wright or his workers would have to be morons to not know what they are buying. There could be something to the ‘getting votes’ thing since I observed the county police at Wright’s competitor over the summer checking out people while they waited to offload their scrap. I have never seen these same police checking people while they waited to unload at Wright’s. If scrap dealers wouldn’t buy stolen items ranging from your missing aluminum ladder to riding lawn mowers — and the marker from your loved one’s grave — there would be no market. I also know that Harley Slone is not the first to steal and sell these grave markers in Letcher County. He isn’t smart enough to have come up with the idea on his own and learned how to do it from someone else who has been doing it quite a while. I personally think a stay in a psych ward and drug rehab would do Slone the most good, as it would anyone else who exhibits the behavior of a compulsive liar and a narcissist. However, let us not forget those out there who would buy stolen jewelry from a body dug up from a grave if they could make a profit.

To my Prince Albert: We will be together soon. I understand the baby-sitting can’t wait.

.

I read a comment in Speak Your Piece about Randy Blair and his construction company working for the City of Jenkins. The person who submitted that comment should get out and work like Randy does, from sunrise to sunset. If you have enough gall, go up and tell Randy what you think about him. He will talk to you. I think that was very rude. Randy works for a living. What about you?

.

I have been going to the Jenkins Homecoming festival and this time was about the worse one. Everybody was disappointed. The man trying to act like Elvis made everybody sick. And then the police were there waiting to take him to jail. If they can’t get someone who is somebody, it is best that they don’t have anyone perform at Jenkins.

.

I am a widowed lady. I am looking for a Christian guy who knows how to treat a lady. He must be clean, civilized, decent and go to church. Respond in next week’s Speak Your Piece.

.

I think it is a shame that if a child gets hurt at Jenkins High School, they will not pay for his or her medical bills. A friend of mine fell at the school last week and had to have an MRI done and it cost me out of my pocket $2,900. I feel like the school should be responsible for that.

.

I can’t believe that they finally cleaned up a little bit of Hemphill, McRoberts and Neon. I have never seen so many druggies. It must be the capital of the county for the drugs. Thanks for cleaning it up, Danny Webb.

.

This is to the person who wrote in about the ATVs: We have to cross roads to get to the other side like everybody else. You don’t have to wear helmets with motorcycles. If you are over 18, you don’t have to wear helmets with ATVs. We do wear our seatbelts. We do have insurance. We would buy tags but we can’t, so in return they pull you over and give you a ticket for it. We are in the hills, but we do have to cross the road like everybody else.

.

I was at the Jenkins City Council meeting the other night and I heard the man call Jenkins Mayor G.C. Kincer a bald-faced liar. I agree with the citizen there.

.

To the people of Letcher County: I am a parent of three boys who play football and I am concerned. Our school system has opted to pay this high school football coach a staggering salary when we have had programs and teaching positions cut and are seeking government funding for countywide free meals because the area is ‘so impoverished.’ And for what, a 1-4 record? When this coach was hired all we heard about was how he had won a state title at Lexington Christian Academy and that he was the kind of coach Letcher County needed to bring this program back to life. Well, that state title statistic doesn’t impress me that much considering the fact that LCA is a private school with open recruiting. If a man can hand pick his players the question shouldn’t be how do you win a state title, but how could you not? According to the coach, his current team only has one player he thinks is good enough to play on his state title winning team. Why say that about the kids who come out and practice their guts out for him every day and play their hearts out for him every weekend? I know the talent is there. My son used to play with these very boys when they were in middle school. I’ve seen them play the likes of Johnson County, Pike County, Belfry, and Prestonsburg, where they absolutely dominated, winning the Big Sandy Valley Conference twice. These boys can play. These past couple of seasons is not on them; it lies solely on the coaching, period. And since I’m on that subject, can anyone tell me why in the world not one single applicant from Letcher County was even granted an interview? I think we all need to band together and take our school back and get some hometown coaches who are in it for the kids and the pure love of the game. If the football program in this area doesn’t have a complete overhaul in a positive direction in the near future, my only option will be to move my family to a place where sports is not only for looks, but for life. My boys love the game and they have potential, but not here — not in the direction this county has taken. We’ve tried it their way with these overpaid out-of-towners, and obviously that hasn’t worked.

.

I read the post about Mitt Romney and the Mormons in last week’s Speak Your Piece and thought, well, it’s about time somebody caught onto this. LDS is a cult and it’s loony as can be. Magic underwear? God lives on planet Kolov? And LDS authorizes lying too, to win converts or evidently to win elections. So now the lying piece of garbage Romney not only politicized a tragedy involving the loss of American lives in Libya, he also out and out lied about the incident in Egypt. After the crazy Florida racist preacher made a film about Islam that caused demonstrations in Egypt, the lying Mormon first said President Obama issued an apology, which is an outright lie. The embassy issued a statement that was unauthorized by the State Department or by the president saying they were not the enemy of Islam and Romney said it was an apology. Now he has doubled down on his lie. He is a heretic with no integrity. Is this the man you want to see as president of the United States? I sure don’t.

.

To whoever is calling a lady a witch who is in a wheelchair: Why don’t you just go and look at yourself in the mirror? You might just be a witch. You sure don’t sound like a Christian. May God bless you.

.

I think the person who prints Speak Your Piece is the person with the angel. They want to keep their column interesting and everyone is falling for it. No sane person could be that ignorant.

.

Martha Jane Potter Elementary School needs a new coach. They are playing the same boys and they are getting the tar beat out of them. The least they could do is rotate the boys and see who the good football players are and then play them. It is pretty darn bad when a team gets beat 42-8. That coach needs to learn how to coach or step down and let somebody else coach or rotate the kids.

.

We really enjoy listening to Kevin Day and Larry Hatton when they are announcing at these LCCHS football games. Come on, Larry, let us hear Kevin talk a little.

.

All this time I thought Leslie Combs was elected to represent all the people of her district and not just the coal operators. I see I was wrong. Combs is just another coal troll. I was embarrassed by her behavior at the Democratic National Convention, first when she got on her knees in front of her masters in the coal industry, and then when she just gave up her vote instead of having the courage to stand by her ‘convictions.’

.

My happiest times are when I am with my angel.

.

To the Johnson boys on Little Cowan: I owe you an apology. I am really sorry.

.

This is just in from the sports network. Kentucky is considering hiring Bobby Petrino as the next football coach. Also, we have a program in Lexington that will rehab Petrino to where he can coach and not get in trouble. He already knows how to coach. We just need to straighten his personal life out. As a bonus, just think of this: You have a coach who used to coach for Louisville that will be coaching for Kentucky and he can go back and beat Louisville. Stay tuned for further details.

What is the difference in the American Legion being a motel or the American Legion trailer they own being a motel? Explain that to me, please.

.

To a certain woman: When you think your man is at work he is out with a little girl at Isom. When you think he is out doing extra work, he is out with her. You need to wise up. She is the one he loves, not you.

.

The power of love is precious, priceless and forever. You are my angel.

.

I ran into Coach Howard at the Mexican restaurant the other night and I wanted to let him know we sure wished it was him up on the LCC hill coaching those boys that he knows so well. I know that if he was up there coaching my son would probably still be playing football.

.

Dear Lord, I am just a drop of water in your deep blue sea. And in your mighty forest I am just a tiny seed. And I am just a rolling pebble on your mountain land. And in your burning desert I am just a grain of sand.

.

A Man of joy. Dear love, Doct. CC (510 Gold), I want to apologize for all the things that I didn’t do. I want to apologize for all the things that I did. Forgive me. I didn’t want to hurt you. No way. Only I can tell face to face. Together forever.

.

If you gave a dog chocolate, how much would you have to give it to kill it? There are two dogs in Whitco that need chocolate very badly. They bark 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you are going to keep it caged up 24/7, you don’t need a dog. People in Whitco would like to sleep at night. They can’t for the barking dogs. They go about 20-25 pounds, so how much chocolate does someone give them?

.

Letcher County artisans are featured in the September issue of Kentucky Monthly magazine. There are articles with pictures on the late Charlie Whitaker, the Carcassonne dance and Frances Whitaker.

.

There is a very gay curious bigot who keeps writing long and ridiculous posts in here about how homosexuality is an abomination and complaining about the ACLU. One thing, Bub. The only people I ever knew who hated gay people as much as you do were actually in the closet and afraid to come out. My guess is that’s your case too. Your ignorance of the Constitution is your problem and it has nothing to do with the ACLU. You just keep obeying your right wing masters and they will keep on laughing at you and other ‘useful idiots.’ The big oil companies and their everlasting greed is what has gas prices up, and the Republicans in Congress have their back.

.

The desecration of the Cornett and other cemeteries is intolerable. We have been forced to accept a lot, but this is beyond the pale. There’s no point in talking about the thief. That doesn’t bear discussion, but what about those who bought the markers? How could they have possibly mistaken them for anything but what they were? The paper said the authorities would try to return them. Really? Does that seem like a reasonable solution, or conclusion? Accepting stolen property violates the law, in case they don’t know that, and having telephone lines stolen for years with no apparent solution would suggest that they don’t.
