Why are families not as close as they used to be? Forty years ago people would do anything to them and love each other no matter what we do. I love my family and will do anything to help them.

.

I was talking to a man the other day who had lost the use of his own hand trying to help someone out. He said nobody wanted a onearmed man to do anything. I asked him a few more questions about it. He did not have one bad thing to say about the people he was helping. I can’t see not trying to help someone who is trying to help you. God bless him.

Why does the mayor of Jenkins keep spending money on new employees the city might not be able to afford and probably doesn’t need for a town of one city block, as well as a lot of other things money is spent on that might not be necessary or even affordable? He delegates all responsibilities. So many things are done, although legally, without the city council’s knowledge. The city needs a monthly public accounting so the people will know what kind of shape the city is in from month to month. We deserve to know how much money we have on an ongoing basis. It’s not a trust issue. It’s a matter of routine accountability. The fact that the books are always open isn’t enough. It’s important that the citizens know exactly what’s going on. The city council goes on blind faith about much of the day-to-day operations. One council member carries on routinely with a genuine concern. Mayor, give us, the people whose hard earned taxes provide you a check for very little in return, an itemized monthly accounting of where our city stands financially and do it on a regular basis. Please don’t take this personally. The people have the right and you have the responsibility as an honorable man to keep us informed. The clock will soon start counting down on the last half of your term. We are concerned about what might happen in the next two years. I urge other citizens to join me and urge the mayor to inform us substantively and regularly.

(Like other cities of its size in Kentucky, Jenkins is subjected to a legally required audit each fiscal year. The city also has a finance officer who gives monthly reports to the city council.)

I would love to know how the junior varsity at Letcher County Central High School is supposed to get any better when they have a junior varsity game and they play most of the varsity players on junior varsity as well. Give those boys a break.

.

Are there any Democrats left in Letcher County? Your local leadership has abandoned you and taken up the cause of Romney because their pocketbooks depend on keeping the coal and gas barons in big cities like Richmond and Philadelphia smiling. Check the election finance reports. Numbers of strangers in Philadelphia, Richmond and New York have contributed to local races because they want to continue to control us like dogs on leashes. Letcher County and our future can’t continue to depend on the whims and wishes of the billionaires who live elsewhere. Democrats in Letcher County voted against Obama in 2008 because their leaders supported John McCain. Do you honestly think that Obama is against working people? You know in your heart that he is not against working people and the elderly. Why in this world do you believe that Romney supports the principles of the Democrat Party? The Democrat Party has always been the party of the little man. Romney is not even a good Republican. Real Republicans don’t want to gut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and foul our water and air. When you vote for Romney on November 6 your fathers and grandfathers roll over in their graves. They knew what is was like to work in our coal mines for slave wages with no Social Security, no Medicare, no Medicaid, no hope and a chest full of coal dust. Have you been so brainwashed by the billionaires you will abandon your party? For what?

.

WYMT-TV had a news poll the other day asking if they should charge to let people vote. In my opinion, this is no better than people who have been buying votes and have gone to prison for it. What about the people who cannot afford to pay to vote? If they do this, then you might as well say everything is communist because they will make it their way. Don’t let them take that right away.

.

I think it’s a shame how mothers can give birth to a child and throw them down for a man. And a man who would stay with a woman knowing her child hates him is trash.

.

I don’t think it is a sin to wear pants to church. God doesn’t look on outside appearance; He looks on the inside. He looks at what is in your heart. He doesn’t judge by your clothes. He doesn’t care what you wear. It’s what is in your heart that really matters. May God bless.

.

I hear a lot of Christians saying they are voting for Romney because of two issues, abortion and same sex marriage. While he was governor, he said he supported abortion (previous debate with Ted Kennedy), and he also supported same sex unions. Last week he said as president he would not introduce any legislation concerning abortion. Please be a good steward and investigate other Mormon beliefs and see if you think they are even more important than these. Mormons believe that God is a flesh-andblood man named Elohim living on the planet Kolob. They believe there are many gods and at least three levels of heaven. Other Mormon beliefs — the book of Mormon is more correct than the King James Bible and adds new information; there is no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith as a prophet of God; the garden of Eden was in Missouri; Jesus wasn’t born of a virgin; God had sex with Mary; Jesus was supposed to return in the year 2000; the role of women is childbearing and housekeeping; and polygamy is still doctrinal in heaven and included in their scripture. Don’t take my word or anyone else’s word for this. Read it for yourself in the Book of Mormon and the official writings of their prophets, which immediately become canon. Romney is very secretive about his policies, taxes, and religious practices maybe as a result of his affiliation with a very secretive religious sect. If you are really serious about voting your Christian conscious, please inform yourself, pray about it, and consider your vote in the light of God’s word. Thank you.

.

It is a dirty shame that a brother would accuse his own brother of being on cocaine and other drugs while he was lying in the hospital about to die from working so hard and having a wreck. I don’t need to name any names. He knows who he is. Shame on you.

.

Every time a certain woman’s old man leaves, a vehicle pulls in her driveway — 20 times a day, sometimes. Her old man works his behind off only to have her sniff it up her nose. This woman lives in a community between Isom and Whitesburg and is also the biggest thief around. If she comes to your house keep your eye on her.

.

I’d like to speak to the voters of Letcher County. I’ve seen a lot of campaigning in Speak Your Piece and every time I read it I get mad. If you uphold abortion, if you uphold gay rights, if you uphold spending every dime of money the United States has got and borrowing money from China to finance it with then please vote for Barack Obama. If you don’t, don’t. But when you pull that handle that is what you are upholding.

.

Congratulations to Kevin Looney of Burdine, who has recently moved up to Number 3 in Reverb Nation’s country music charts, both nationally and globally. He’s also Number 75 on the USA All-Genre chart and Number 144 on the Global All-Genre chart. That’s out of 2.5 million artists. Kevin is behind only Trace Adkins and A. Codispot. Reverb Nation is the biggest and most accurate social internet music chart in the world. All of the world’s biggest musicians are on there, signed and unsigned.

.

I’d like to wish a belated happy birthday to a wonderful cousin and a sweetheart of a lady. Her birthday was October 13.

.

To the guy who keeps bragging about his beautiful angel from heaven: Believe me, she is no angel. She isn’t even close to being an angel. You wouldn’t even give her the time of day if she didn’t have an income.

.

I looked all through The Mountain Eagle this week and there still hasn’t been anything about the man who got burnt up in the truck over on Eolia. They put them in jail but we haven’t heard anything else. Are they going to try them? Are they just going to let them wait there? What are they going to do with them? Are they going to just shut it up like they do everything else in Letcher County?

.

Someone remarked accurately that a lot of criminals no longer have any fear of the law. That means that most honest people are living in danger. One of the hazards is that a burglar may break into a house and find someone there they didn’t expect to find, and that person would be in great peril. Doors, unless reinforced, can almost all be kicked in with a heavy boot, no matter how well they are locked. What we need is for the law to establish that fear.

.

I don’t understand why you have to put this in about the guy’s angel every week. It is really causing you to lose readers. It gets old after awhile. Please reconsider. At least put a warning up so we can be prepared for when this is coming.

.

Let me tell you how to achieve greatness. I have a grandson and a nephew who played three sports and excelled in all three. They never missed a practice and were never late for practice. They went to practice even if they were injured. They made good grades. They didn’t sass the teachers. They worked out. They both have scholarships. That’s how you do it. You don’t quit when the going gets tough. There is a price to pay for greatness and they paid it.

.

Maybe President Obama should develop a case of laryngitis before the next presidential debate and make Joe Biden his designated debater.

.

I don’t know who won the vice-presidential debate, but I’ll bet Joe Biden’s dentist is doing a booming business. Aren’t those nice implants?

.

Is there any truth to the rumor that a certain business owner has agreed to snitch on others who have done business with him in order to get himself immunity from charges.

.

Before the vice presidential debate a poll was taken on how many people in the room liked the way the country was going. Only four people raised their hand and said they liked the way the country is going. The rest didn’t raise their hand. They raised their hands to say they didn’t like how the country was going, yet they are registered Democrats and will still vote for Obama because they are Democrats. That’s the stupidest thing I ever heard, voting for someone just because you are in the same party. You need to vote for the right man. That’s Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, dummies.

.

I went to the Jenkins/ Hazard football game. Everyone thought it was going to be a slaughter, especially since two of our best players quit. The quarterback even quit. Our boys played with such guts and heart and never gave up. I am so proud of them. That is a true spirit of courage and leadership.

.

I think it is a shame the way they treated a couple of housekeepers who used to work at the nursing home. They quit their jobs over the way they were being treated. I don’t blame them. I think it is a dirty shame.

.

I went into the Letcher County Sanitation Department office the other day to pay my garbage bill and the blonde in there has got to be the most beautiful angel on this planet.

.

To the person who made the ignorant comment in the September 26 paper about Mitt Romney and check drawers: Don’t you know that our government takes care of its people? That’s what makes us so great and separates us from these third world countries. It’s the same government checks and food stamps that will take care of your ignorant behind when you can no longer work. What do you think food stamps and disability are for? A lot of good men and women who worked their whole lives and got injured are on these checks and food stamps that you want done away with. Some have never been able to work at all. And as I do agree that a lot of people are wrongly drawing these checks when people who really need them can’t, doesn’t mean we should attack the whole system and persecute those who need them for the right reasons. Maybe we could filter out the ones who can work and don’t need it. People that would be left with no way to feed their children without them, what kind of chaos would that cause? I like that we take care of each other in the end. I wouldn’t want a government that didn’t care for its people, disabled or not. Our government has a wonderful system to take care of its less fortunate American people that otherwise couldn’t survive. It gives hope. I say no to Mitt Romney if taking that away is his great plan. We need someone in the office that can take care of this financial mess and keep hope alive.

.

I was reading in The Mountain Eagle where Letcher County Tourism was thanking everyone for their participation in the Mountain Heritage Festival Parade. Were the beauty pageant contestants listed in the thank you ad? They were also in the parade coming through town. I think it would have been nice if The Mountain Eagle would have put a few pictures of the pageant winners in the paper. It takes a lot of money to get your people ready for the pageant. I think they should have been considered more than what has been shown in this situation.

(We published a number of photographs taken during the beauty pageants associated with the Mountain Heritage Festival. Photos of two of the winners appeared on the front page of one edition.)

.

There is a lady who is running a photography business out of her home. We wonder how she keeps getting food stamps and has free work done on her home. She has Medicaid cards for her children and she has a thriving business on which she doesn’t pay taxes. She keeps sticking her nose in everyone else’s business. She would be better to mind her own business.

.

This is my opinion concerning Mitchell Wright’s letter to the editor in which he states his business follows the letter of the law: I do not recall 60 years of scrap business since I am not 60 years old. As the old saying goes, ‘It is better to remain silent and thought ignorant, than to open the mouth and remove all doubt.’ I do not think Mr. Wright would need the money from buying items such as copper or brass cemetery markers, but greed can override one’s ability to think in a right mind. Now for Harley Slone: He stole because he is addicted to drugs. He also has not had any driver’s license for a very long time, nor does he have any other kind of identification. I think there was already a law on the books requiring that I.D.’s be checked by scrap yards for some time prior to this unfortunate case. I also know for a fact that Slone gave Wright’s scrap yard possession of a car worth maybe $800 for $150 after the car was loaned to Slone to drive only. This car did not belong to Slone nor have his name on a bill of sale. I must add that a Chevy Cavalier does not have a dump bed on it.

.

Of course this is only one person’s opinion, but I am sure I could have a few people back me. I think Letcher County Central High School needs to get a new basketball coach and football coach. If Superintendent Anna Craft cannot see that, then maybe it is time for her to go.

.

Do you think some of the coal people will be in hell shoveling coal over their drugs?

.

Who wants to go to war with me? Let’s get out here and mess some stuff up. Let’s party. Let’s get it on. Let’s shoot the hell out of everything, everybody and each other.

.

I think everyone knows who a certain woman is going to vote for because she has been with that kind.

.

Have you ever dreamed of seeing an angel? I don’t have to dream. I see mine every day. And I love you. You are my angel.

.

We want to wish our mommy a happy birthday. It was on October 4. We love you, Mommy. From Jasmine and Gavin.

.

If you absolutely have to blow your nose in a restaurant, be considerate of others around you and please go to the restroom to do it. Thank you.

.

Aggie Hatton was such a sweet person. I got to know her when she worked at Ramey’s Diner. Charlie and family, my sympathy goes out to you and your kids. These are not just pretty words. She also talked to me about the good Lord. Thank you, Stanley Pack.

.

Break-ins are happening more and more often, and as the economy gets worse I think this will increase. Is anything being done to stall this or turn it around? Is there any realization of these crimes, some of which are happening in daylight and others in well lighted town locations at night? Are the authorities aware of how much danger we are in? If not, people had better get security alarms, the noisier the better, and try to fend for themselves.
