I have a compliment and a complaint all at the same time. The staff at a certain grocery is so courteous. The carryout boys are just wonderful and it is a really good place to shop. The only complaint I have is in the meat department. If you get fresh hamburger, there are big gray streaks all through it. It looks like they have mixed fresh hamburger and old hamburger together. I wonder if someone could explain to me why that is, because I really enjoy trading there and I don’t want to stop.

(Food experts say that if the ground beef is not gray or brown throughout, it is probably okay. The Ohio State University Extension Service reported in October that grayish streaks in ground beef is the result of the beef not being exposed to oxygen. ‘The plastic wrap covering the ground beef you see in the grocery store is permeable, allowing some oxygen to seep through and keep the meat on the exterior red,’ says OSU. ‘But ground beef that’s not exposed to oxygen — like the meat that’s on the interior — will often lose its red color after a few days.’)

To a certain woman: I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the trip we took the other day and I am very much in love with you. I hope we get to do it again before too long.

.

To a retired teacher from Kona: I would like the chance to show you the real me.

I don’t work. I don’t have a job. However, I would like to know why people work who don’t want to work and make comments and look at you like they don’t want to wait on you.

Anyone with factual complaints against UNITE — and if my sense of the community’s attitude is anywhere correct there are several — should address them to Senator Rand Paul. His address is Gorman Educational Center, 601 Main Street, Suite 2, Hazard, KY 41701, and his number is 606 435 2390. I am glad to see that some light is being shed on this outfit. My personal frustration is that federal funding is being used to sustain their taking credit for enforcement efforts that are mostly the work of local offi cers. If a drug bust is made, no matter by whom, don’t get between UNITE and a TV camera. Local officials have to support them, no matter how they may feel, because UNITE and their boss can zap their funding. I don’t think Senator Paul is that enchanted with them, though.

I’m sure glad today we have a man called Jesus that we can look up to and ask for help. And we can get it because He is the only one who can help us. And I thank the good Lord Jesus for that today. You ought to give Him a try. He is there waiting.

I don’t know the lady who comes to the Letcher Fiscal Court and tries to get help on the water situation in her area, but the county ought to hire her. She appears to know more about the situation than the county does and to actually want to help. The fiscal court doesn’t seem to care at all that the people in her area have drinking water contaminated by arsenic and other poisons. Their response is that they will get processed water to her area in one year, or two years, or maybe five years. That is a long-term solution, maybe, but it doesn’t keep people from being poisoned in the meantime. What they need a short-term fix to tide them over. The county needs to help install 500-gallon tanks for them and be up there with water trucks keeping those tanks filled until the piped water is available. It might take some money, but there are a number of less-critical areas that could be cut. Instead, the county judge seems to want to attack her instead of the problem. He said, ‘I’m not going to set here and listen to this’ at least three times when she was talking. He doesn’t seem to understand that it’s his job to listen to the problems of the citizens of this county and to try to fix them. The same lady raised an issue of how $2 million was spent and the judge tried to pass that off as well. He said that’s the problem of the water board he appointed. It is his problem. If someone reports that they can’t trace $2 million of public funding gone missing in his county, then the judge ought to get his appointed water board in to explain where it went, and if they won’t or can’t do that, he should be calling in the state auditors. I agree with the lady that the twomillion dollar question is on his desk. If he doesn’t agree, we need a new judge.

Why can’t someone help that one-arm ‘priority one Vietnam Veteran’ at Premium? He gets $2,700 dollars in VA money at the first of the month and over $800 in Social Security benefits, yet lives under the floor in an old coal company house. At least $1,600, and sometimes more, of his money is taken from him by a certain woman and others. During a recent cold spell he had no electricity to power that little electric heater under that floor on the cold ground. No one is entitled to any of this poor man’s money. The Veterans Administration has been informed of this situation. This poor man suffers from high blood pressure, cancer and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Where are adult protective services? Who is checking as to whether his income is being handled properly on his behalf? From a concerned citizen.

It all makes sense now that gay marriage and marijuana were legalized on the same day. Leviticus 20:13 says if a man lies with another man he should be stoned. We were just interpreting it wrong.

I am a lying, cheating, mistreating, no good son of a gun.

When the people were jumping on Obama, a preacher said God would judge Obama, not the Republicans. It seems like the American people and God judge Obama more favorably than the Republicans have. Do the Republicans realize they might be wrong?

I work for a mine company. Some boys in a pickup truck drove up with a load of roof bolts, which they tried to sell to the owner. The owner said they should get off the hill and get off the hill right then. He told me those boys had no honest way of getting the roof bolts. He said if people didn’t buy stolen property then stuff wouldn’t be stolen. It’s the same with copper. The people buying the copper should be in trouble as well as the people stealing the copper. Where are you going to get copper around here unless you steal it?

.

Edison Banks, a comment in last week’s Speak Your Piece does bring up questions. Why were you undermined and left out of the Mitchell Wright case? It is clear to see that if scrap yards weren’t buying grave markers, the junky thieves like Harley Slone wouldn’t be able to sell them. So Edison, why can’t Slone be allowed to plead out to a lesser court and pay a small fine? He is the drug addict, not Wright. Surely you did not know of this and agree to it.

.

Mr. President, you said the American people have spoken. You’ve got to remember that some of them voted against you. And we still say someone needs to take your credit card away from you and cut it in two. We need to quit borrowing from China. You need to break even with China and tell them that for all of the technology that they have stolen from us that we are just going to call it even. Then America will pull itself out. Talking about a fiscal cliff, we all have parachutes. Let’s go over that cliff.

It appears the lunatic is at it again. She must be getting neglected.

.

The new mural that was painted on the side of the old WIFX building in downtown Whitesburg sure is looking good. That was a great idea.

(It really does look nice, doesn’t it?)

.

Why do schools in Letcher County fundraise so much? Where does all of this money go? Is it to buy textbooks?

In May of 2010, I commented in Speak Your Piece about the uselessness of UNITE. Millions of our tax dollars have been put it into the salaries of UNITE workers who are so overpaid that some of them actually make more than the governor. Their so-called help in the fight on drugs had mostly been a reversal in that it has made drug prices go up and street dealers rich — but not as rich as the UNITE workers who have at times set their own salaries up as much as $20,000 to $40,000 per year on top of the $80,000 they were already getting. UNITE is almost entirely made up of enforcement officers that were already in place before it started. It started by giving all the names of drugs that could be abused in the news, although at the time they may not have been much of a problem. When something is advertised, then it automatically draws attention to someone who never tried it before to try it. In other words, UNITE made the menu public and laid out the smorgasbord to test from. UNITE has also caused great harm to those who have an honest and legal need for the painkillers and nerve medications. Now those who are elderly, in real pain, and cannot sleep are the ones who now suffer. The state government now dictates who gets medicine, not a doctor who spent a large part of his or her life to get licensed. It is a farce and insult to the general public. Prohibition of drugs has been even more of a failure than prohibition of alcohol. How stupid does one have to be to donate tax money to a useless money pit when it could be spent on the poor and homeless, or the starving kids we don’t want to think about or bring into public view. Legalization of marijuana alone would take billions of useless drug eradication money out of the hands of the police and government. My 75-year-old mother has to sit in a pain clinic sometimes as long as eight hours to get Lorcet for her pain at the ridiculous price of $400. UNITE and the government medical takeover have actually made it easier and even cheaper in many cases to just buy street pills or even change over to heroin as some already have. We are feeding the pork pig in Washington from right here in Letcher County. Please join me and don’t be afraid to state your opinion on this failed project in Speak Your Piece.

The chain link fence is about to fall over at the park in Whitesburg beside the swimming pool. It doesn’t look very safe to me.

I think most people, at least secretly, think that marijuana should be legalized — that the war has been lost and the sheriff should be allowed to get on to more important things. Marijuana is probably no more harmful than lots of legal substances, and yes that includes soft drinks which are coming under intense medical scrutiny and concern. I am certainly not advocating making soft drinks illegal, just trying to bring some balance to the situation. The major foes of legalization are, of course, the gangsters who profit so handsomely from it being illegal. Also, the legal agencies, such as UNITE, who depend on it more than any other drug to keep them in existence and well funded. I have always wondered about the legality of that organization. How can a congressman justify having his own police force? I think it is probably unique, and I would like to see someone who has been charged by them challenge their constitutionality. I think a lot of legitimate lawmen are skeptical of their benefit, and consider them a hindrance.

.

I have been watching the Letcher County Fiscal Court on TV and seeing how Judge/Executive Jim Ward treats the people he was elected and gets paid to serve. He’s getting too big for his britches.

.

It’s funny that Bill Meade and his Republican pals who say they don’t believe in government come to the Letcher County Fiscal Court every month with their hands out, asking the government to solve their problems for them.

As the national debt continues to explode and the greedy, gullible American public continues to demand more from the federal government, there will be a time in the future where our economic system will completely fail. Especially when the candidates for public office who promise the most get elected and reelected. Every society from the beginning of time has risen up, and eventually declined or became history due to the increasing demands of the general public. With the two billion dollar- a- day deficit we are now experiencing and the leadership of the great country promising more to get elected and reelected, along with a national debt interest that is exceeding the tax revenue and continued commitment to allies by sending troops at every incident around the world it appears. Plus the leadership of the great country allowing foreign goods brought into this country that have been made under working conditions not acceptable in this country with the result of millions of blue collar jobs going overseas. It is the responsibility of the leaders of the great country to review the direction the country is going and the America people to demand a change in direction of this great country, or we will decline into disaster like other great societies of the past. As one of seven brothers who proudly served our county in war and peace times and thousands of young men and women who proudly served this country, we deserve something better than the future as it looks today for our children and grandchildren. Billy R. Shepherd, CLU/USMC WW II. Born in Letcher County.

I really like watching the government channel but I wish there was some way they could settle their pictures down and stop all the shaking and jumping. I makes me so dizzy sometimes I feel like I’m carsick.

.

Thank God for The Mountain Eagle and Speak Your Piece, because they give us about our only chance to speak out against a really bad situation where criminals are apparently hand in glove with the courts. No one is above the law, and that includes the law, but some of our officials think so. They put out these ridiculous and harmful judgments anymore and don’t even try to justify them. Who do you report this arrogance to? I imagine all officials have watchdogs, because even presidents get in trouble at times. Where do you go?

.

Some food for thought. Governor Romney won 24 states in his race against President Obama earlier this month. Included in this number were nine of the 11 Confederate states, eight of the 10 states with the lowest population density, zero of the 10 best educated states, nine of the 10 least educated states, one of the 10 healthiest states, and nine of the 10 least healthy states.
