I was reading in The Mountain Eagle a couple of weeks ago and saw where the Burdine principal was comparing the Jenkins test scores against the Letcher County schools and crowing about Jenkins being better. It kind of reminded me of Tennessee saying they were better than Kentucky in football this year because Kentucky finished at the bottom of the heap and Tennessee was just above them. But remember, both coaches got fired.

As my heritage comes f rom Kingscreek, the daughter of Ellen and Andrew Creech, it breaks my heart that there seems to be more and more things going on there which we always attributed to larger cities. When the major cities looked at us as ‘poverty stricken,’ we looked at ourselves as blessed and protected from all elements of drugs and crime that seemed to be everyday life in larger cities such as Lexington and Louisville. Certainly we knew every neighbor. As I look back to this special time of year, people were always hustling and bustling about from store to store in Whitesburg, smiling as they held packages already wrapped (at no extra charge) to take home and put under the silver tinsel Christmas tree. My heart always warms when I think of my Mom always staying home on Christmas Eve because she had so much to do to prepare for the next day while we rode around, looking for signs of Santa or a reindeer print in the snow. No TV, no computers or electronic games, and no going in debt for Christmas. We got what Mom and Dad could afford, or a neighbor who knew things were rough for us may have dropped a doll or a Slinky by for me, or Army men for my two brothers. We were the richest, most blessed of people to be called eastern Kentuckians. We were poor by the world’s standards and never knew it. Even as crime and drugs have invaded our eastern Kentucky area, it still has not been able to stop the neighbor from helping neighbor. Although we still are looked at poverty stricken, children still do not know that we are called poor, because we aren’t. Material things do not make us or break us. Although I have been away for more than 24 years, as soon as I speak people always ask, ‘Where are you from?’ Doesn’t offend me at all. I always still say eastern Kentucky and proud of it. I would like to wish all of my extended family a Merry Christmas and blessed new year.

Well, let’s see if The Mountain Eagle has the backbone to investigate and print an article about two of the Jenkins employees illegally using federal water project funds to have their driveways paved. Bet this comment won’t even appear. But that’s okay, because the state auditor has already been contacted and justice will surely be served.

’Social Security, let’s lay it to rest once in for all. … Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit. Social Security is totally funded by the payroll tax levied on employer and employee. If you reduce the outgo of Social Security, that money would not go into the general fund to reduce the deficit. It would go into the Social Security trust fund. So Social Security has nothing to do with balancing the budget or erasing or lowering the deficit.’ — Ronald Reagan, 1984

I’ve been thinking about the arsenic in the water of those people who are coming to the Letcher County Fiscal Court for help, and being told that they have to wait until the funds are available. Well, if the county hadn’t spent most of the county money on that recreation center over the last several years, they wouldn’t be waiting for money and contracts. Is a climbing wall more important than healthy water? A lot of people who don’t use that rec center are suffering because of it.

.

Our coal is gone, or going — at least the coal that’s easy enough to get to for it to be profitable — and the big utilities can get cheap gas and avoid paying the high coal prices. Now the gas companies and their suppliers are going too, because there’s so much gas up north and in every other direction. Where does that leave us? In a predicament, I would say, and no one is more responsible for accelerating our loss of the coal business to gas, and now the loss of the gas business to areas where the gas is easier to get than our judge/executive, Jim Ward, who got in office largely by gas company support and money. I would be interested in knowing how he plans to fill in this job gap he has been so instrumental in creating.

.

I wonder if a certain woman found herself a man that doesn’t know she took seven men to bed one night while she was pregnant.

.

To a certain person: I guess I am going to have to tell you through The Mountain Eagle’s Speak Your Piece that I still think about you and miss you. You haven’t called me in awhile. I guess I will send you a message through the paper. I miss talking to you.

.

I sure wish someone would fix that big clock at Community Trust Bank in Whitesburg. I miss seeing what time it is. Please, someone take care of this.

.

To a certain woman: You told your ex-husband what you like doing. Are you going to tell God that when you meet Him?

.

God has made a lot of angels, but you are the best. You are the only one. You are the best and I love you. You are my angel. You are number one.

.

I get sick and everybody leaves me. Nobody calls me anymore. Poor baby.

.

In the late 1930s and early 1940s my mother was in an insane asylum in Danville. From what she told me, the doctors and the staff used and abused her sexually. I don’t want to believe that, but did my mother lie to me? No. You can’t trust anybody nowadays or back then or anytime. They used and abused her with shock treatments to no end. Shame on them. I hope they have to meet God Almighty for that one of these days.

.

If the fiscal court cuts funding for the senior centers, combines centers, busses some of the seniors, and generally makes life more difficult for those who are so dependent on the centers, will they also cut funding for the recreation center?

.

I’ve got some good advice to give everybody. If you are fixing to do it, I’m telling you to not do it. I had some moonshine sitting here and I mixed it with kraut juice. Don’t ever mix kraut juice and moonshine. I couldn’t drink it. I had to pour it on the ground. Nobody can drink that.

.

Way to go, Kevin Day. Looks like A.J. Slone didn’t learn a thing since his February ordeal with the fourwheeler theft. He got out of that. Let’s see if he gets out of this just as easy. Hopefully the law will see that he is not going to change. The ones who are with him are not going to change. And in regards to helping A.J. Slone, the only help they can get is to have to work six days a week and be sent to church on Sunday and donate their earnings to an offering.

.

This is the guy who lives in Jenkins who drives a gray SUV with Tennessee stickers all over it responding a comment in last week’s Speak Your Piece. What it is about the University of Kentucky is I took my nephew down to the hospital there and they about killed him. We took him to the University of Tennessee and they saved the little fellow’s life. Thank you and have a good day.

.

I wouldn’t blame AT&T if they pulled their telephone wires out of here. Why should they have to keep putting up new copper just so the thieves can get it again? This is a disgrace on the part of both the thieves and the law.

.

I also would like to see UNITE’s budget published in The Mountain Eagle.

.

There is a certain doctor at Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation who I think is a real hottie.

.

What happened to the bus driver who drove the bus at Gordon? Why did he quit?

.

I sure hope Judge Jim Ward doesn’t close our senior citizens center at Boone Fork, because these ladies would miss having a good time with the old gentlemen. That’s the only time we get to see them and have any time. We would miss them. Please, Jim Ward, please don’t close the centers. It’s not that much money for the county to keep these senior citizens centers open. We would be lost without them. Some of us old folk don’t cook that much and aren’t good cooks and are widowed. We would be hurting if the centers closed. We are sorry that the county is in that bad of shape, but we hope you see fit to keep them open and not close them. We are in dire need of keeping our senior citizens healthy and happy.

.

To a certain person: We’ve got better things to do than pay attention to a freak like you.

.

Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of your sins. The Bible says flesh and blood cannot enter the kingdom of God. You must be born again.

.

Eternity is long. Hell is hot. Repent said the Lord.

.

Sin might be popular in the world’s eyes, but it is not in God’s eyes. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

.

I wish they would do something about the drug dealing at Jeremiah. It looks like a used car lot from about the first until the 10th of each month. It’s about the same at Woodrock. I’m going to keep calling until they do something about it. I don’t see why they don’t.

.

What else is Mayor James Wiley Craft going to legalize in Whitesburg? Marijuana? Prostitution? Who knows?

(Assuming you’re referring to the sale of alcohol in Whitesburg, it was made legal by the voters who live in the city — by a margin of more than two to one.)

.

This is to the people who are missing the little black Chihuahua: I’m sorry about your dog being missing, but I will gladly give you a little reddish brown Chihuahua to take its place. If you want it, the number is 855-8229 or anybody else who would like a Chihuahua so he could have a good home. He gets along great with cats.

.

I heard on the news that UNITE is getting a lot of coal severance funding, and then I read in the paper that some of the senior centers are likely to be closed, or combined, because they aren’t going to get the same kind of funding. This is terribly wrong and our elected leaders had better take note of this, and correct it, or they won’t get elected anymore. Why don’t we do like Washington State and legalize marijuana, and maybe that UNITE boondoggle couldn’t justify itself anymore.

.

I never was so surprised in my life when I read The Mountain Eagle this week and someone commented about the principal at Arlie Boggs Elementary School. I for one think he is a gentleman. He has the nicest wife and family. Sometimes I think people just have to be critical and they don’t know any other way to do it but in Speak Your Piece.

.

Folks all over Premium, Bee Tree Hollow, Roxana, Letcher County and other states are expressing deep concern for the one-arm Vietnam Priority Group 1 Vet who is having to live on a dirt floor under a coal company house and taking baths in the creek or at a barrel behind the house. Does he have enough money to buy his food? It doesn’t appear as if he does. Who’s going to put the poor fellow on their Christmas list? From an outraged citizen.

.

The South Korean rapper PSY has the most popular video ever on the Internet. ‘Gangnam Style’ has 800 million hits on YouTube. There is a parody of this ‘Gangnam Style’ by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students, which I think is better. I have watched it about 100 times. I love it. Check both of these out. It makes me forget about all of the problems in the world.

.

So, the County Judge/Executive gets on TV and says we need to do something about ‘some’ of the creeks polluted with toxic metals. Why not all of them? Why are a rec center and horse trails more important than our kids having water that won’t kill them? We’ve spent millions of dollars, but our leaders’ priorities are upside down.

.

As a citizen of Jenkins, I was watching the government channel the other day and Mayor G.C. Kincer said he was going to have a swearing-in ceremony and dinner at the Pine Mountain Grill. In our economy, we can’t even put food on our table. We’re having such a hard time and he is spending taxpayer dollars. And he has raised the taxes in the City of Jenkins. I just wonder how he can do that, and I just wanted to speak my piece about it.

.

I think it is time that someone else take over the Tree of Hope, like maybe Winston Meade’s office, the judge’s office, the sheriff ’s department, Margaret Nichols’s office, some other business or someone else in town could help out. The woman who has done it the last two years pretty much on her own and I just think someone else should help her out. It shouldn’t be left up to just one person to have to do everything. Bless her heart, someone should help her. It is such a good cause.

.

To a certain person: You are the only thing I want for Christmas.

.

I just want to make it clear that I think the cops should have been called when first graders at Burdine School are bringing pain pills to school and giving them to other children. They could have overdosed from it or have been really hurt, and the school officials didn’t do their job properly by getting down to the bottom of it. As of now, nothing has been done and this happened December 5. And if they want to know my name, it’s Wanda.

.

Merry Christmas to Mommy and Poppy. I love you both very much. Thank you to the Boone Fork Community Center for giving Mommy and Poppy something to do each and every day. I wish everyone in Letcher County a merry Christmas from Stamping Ground.

.

To a certain person: There is an angel on earth because you are it. You are my angel and I love you.

.

I don’t get you people. Where I come from if you have something to say you stand tall and say it. You don’t hide behind a newspaper. The next time you go to Walmart to buy sweet tea, pick you up a backbone or better yet, grow you a pair.

.

I know Mitchell Wright paid a $500 fine. He only got a slap on the back and they have offered Harley Jack 12 years. This is not fair at all. I guess Mitchell Wright was right when he said he owned the courthouse.

.

To a certain woman: Everyone knows why you divorced your husband and he will never have you back. So I guess you found somebody else now.

.

This is to the lady with the long dark hair who works out at the rec center at about noon pretty much every day: I have seen you several times and I think you are gorgeous. If you are interested in meeting and talking, please let me know in next week’s Speak Your Piece.

.

When you go to church you need to ask forgiveness for your lying, thieving, ruthless, obsessive ways. You really have no room to call someone a slut when you are still living as a slut. Prayers are definitely needed for you. I have nothing more to say to a lowly person such as yourself. You need help.

.

You are the true lunatic, Blondie. You’re good at making a fool out of yourself, and you would know what it’s like to be a slut, wouldn’t you?
