I’m not very good at arithmetic so maybe someone can help me solve this problem. Why is it that these people with old yellow-stained, rotten teeth or no teeth at all can afford a $300-a-month cigarette habit, but they can’t afford dentures? I’ll bet they removed all the mirrors from their homes so they wouldn’t have to look at that nasty, rotten hole in their face. Or maybe they can’t see it for the smoke in their eyes.

The quickest way to learn to speak a foreign language is to send someone from the mountains of eastern Kentucky to Ohio or Michigan for six months. When they come back home you won’t be able to understand a word they say.

.

As the LCCHS band and ROTC members try to raise funds to go to Washington to march in the inaugural parade, I can’t help but wonder how many, if any, of the parents of band members actually voted for Obama. I am shocked that the inaugural committee actually chose a marching band from Kentucky since Obama lost here overwhelmingly in the election and everyone here seems to bash him at every given opportunity. Seems kind of hypocritical to me that people from here now want to go be in the parade.

I would like to give a few words of advice to all the phony people in the world: Be what you is, ‘cause if you be what you ain’t, then you ain’t what you is.

.

Now that we have the socalled ‘fiscal cliff ’ resolved for a while, now they are talking about a ‘milk cliff’ where the price of milk and other dairy products could double. I’ll tell you right now, I’m not going to give up my cigarettes, booze, pills and lottery tickets for a bunch of little snotty-nosed younguns. I’ll just buy them soda pop. It’s a lot cheaper.

.

Hey, brother. After these nine years on food stamps for your three kids even though you worked every day, now that you all are married again are you going to keep them up? Love, your sister.

.

This is Candy. I wanted to give a shout out to my husband and tell him that I love him.

.

I cannot believe that our kids are going to entertain Barack Obama. It is horrible. If it was my kid, I would say absolutely not. He has proven that he cares nothing about our community. Look at what he has done. He does not deserve to be entertained. Our kids need to go visit someone who deserves to be praised and it sure isn’t Barack Obama. Shame on you.

I have called the administrator at Letcher Manor Nursing Home for a meeting about a problem that I have been accused of. She said she would rather not call them in for a meeting. I think someone needs to investigate this and give me the state’s phone number so I can investigate. May God bless you and pray for them.

The Letcher County Board of Education and superintendent are at it again. They are spreading misinformation to the public. To imply that the LCCHS Band and ROTC will not be able to make the trip to Washington without contributions from churches, businesses, organizations and general public is blatantly untrue. The school board is required to have funds in reserve to cover such occasions. Normally the amount of these funds exceeds one million dollars. So why do we tolerate such nonsense? This exceptional educational opportunity will not pass this way again. We need to ask the school board to assume their responsibility or resign.

Thursday, Jan. 3, 2012. I was wondering why you didn’t print what I had to say in the December 26 edition. I was wishing some close friends a merry Christmas and wishing a few people happy birthday. I would still appreciate mine being printed even if it is late. Okay? Thank you, Stanley Pack.

(If you mailed a message to us we didn’t receive it. Sorry about that.)

This is in response to the person who spoke their piece about the silent ‘s’ in Illinois and the difference between bath and bathe: Bravo. It’s about time that was brought to the attention of people in this region, but you left out a few things. There is no ‘s’ on Wal-Mart or Avon, just look on the bags, or no ‘er’ on the end of wasp. The bug is a wasp, not a wasper. Bobby and Robert and Billy and William are the same name as are other names that are the shorter form of their names, and the Junior in a boy’s name goes after his last name and not in between his first and last names, as in John Doe Jr. not John Jr. Doe. The Junior should only be used after the boy’s first name to distinguish him from his father, as in John Jr. and John Sr. Okay, I’m finished now. Please excuse me while I go take a bathe. Oh, and by the way, I’m not a city person. I live in Letcher County.

.

To a certain person: I can’t get you off my mind since seeing you at Walmart in Norton. Why don’t you come by the hospital and see me?

Hey! This is P. Hall 183134 here at EKCC. Just wanted to give a shout out to my boys locked up across the state. You know who you are. And to J. Bates, thanks for the shout out. Write me at: 200 Road to Justice, West Liberty, KY 41472. Much love and respect, P. Hall.

Outrageous! Outrageous! Outrageous! A once in a lifetime opportunity for the LCCHS band has already been tarnished by a superintendant and board of education who refused to stand up and say, ‘Yes we will pick up the tab.’ I am disappointed that a church allowed the school leader to speak to the congregation during a Sunday morning live radio broadcast to solicit donations. By the way, this church has been having budget problems all year. Anyone who has been selected, elected, or appointed to a school position knows that the board of education must maintain contingency funds of at least 5 percent of their budget. In this case the amount is approximately $1.5 million. So why are donations needed? The school board has spent millions for sports facilities. They have also created high-paying classified jobs for coaches who have retired from certifi ed positions. Is this still the practice to attract reluctant coaches, or have these positions been eliminated? I could go on and on about unethical and/or questionable school board actions, but what’s the use? The only thing we need to teach our students is to stick their hand out and someone will put something in it. Wait a minute, did our school board recently express concern about academic achievement? No, it must have been my imagination. If you wish to question school board actions, expect retribution. I’ve been there, done that.

The Republicans say they want to cut spending before doing anything else to address the deficit. Here are some cuts that need to be made. Start with the bloated military budget. It takes more than 60 percent of U.S. discretionary spending. So let’s close U.S. bases in Germany, England, Japan, Italy, and other NATO and SEATO nations, and stop the ridiculous war in Afghanistan and bring American troops home. We have 13 Nimitz-class carrier groups that have enough firepower to turn most countries into black glass, so why spend billions on overseas bases that help the economy of other countries. Let’s cut back on all the Cold War weapons programs. The Cold War is over, but the weapons programs are still going, Why? Because they create jobs. That is socialism, pure and simple. Spending government money on unnecessary programs just to create jobs. Cut back of the F-22 Raptor fighters. They cost over $450 million each, which makes them so expensive we can’t afford to use them. And they aren’t nearly as superior as they have been sold as being. And while we are cutting spending, let’s cut military aid to Israel. They are perfectly capable of arming themselves. The last time I looked their economy was doing very well. They have no more need of U.S. Foreign aid than any other American ally. Read the history of all the great empires (yes, The U.S. is an empire). Most of them have failed because they get over extended and bankrupt themselves with military spending. Dwight Eisenhower said every bomb, every missile, and every gun bought for military purposes took away from things that are needed in America, and he was the greatest general in U.S. history.

.

I was just watching the news where chicken hawk Mitch McConnell and John McCain’s sea-wife Lindsey Graham were saying they would probably give Chuck Hagel a hard time in his nomination for Secretary of Defense because they don’t think he kowtows to Israel enough. Hagel is a decorated military veteran and a hero of the Vietnam War. Graham was a JAG officer in the Air Force and McConnell cowered in the US while better men served. I support Israel as a democracy, but that sheen is dulling rapidly. Israel has engaged in a brutal occupation of Palestine for over 40 years and has continually responded to even the slightest provocations from Hamas with massive force, using military weapons paid for by the United States. Of course, the Republicans are slavishly supportive of Israel to placate their fundamentalist base and the end time lunatics like John Hagee, but it is un-Constitutional to base U.S. foreign policy in a few passages in the Old Testament. Of course the Old Testament says to support Israel. Jews wrote it.

TVS cable is one in which you need to keep up with every few months, especially this early part of the year. I have found that each time they upgrade to help the customer that the customer pays or loses in some way. On the computer it is speed loss or money billed. What used to be $20 is now about $25 for the same speed, but instead of 1.50 or what was 1.56 mbps is now only 1.45 mbps maxed on download and is pitiful at 0.37 upload. To get something that is even worth using you will have to spend $30, or more. It is according if you have Pony Express or Wells Fargo to delivery your mail and pictures! NetZero has a speed for ten bucks that is about as fast as the one that is $25 from TVS. Will someone please tell me one that works at a decent price that is faster than a horse?

I’ve always heard that people who really hate gays are closet cases themselves. If that’s the case, there are a couple of men in this county who are as gay as a goose, because the same two guys say terrible things about gay people every week in the Speak Your Piece. If it’s on your mind that much, it’s probably your secret desire. Ask a psychiatrist.

It’s really disappointing to see someone who makes their living off taxpayer dollars get on Facebook telling others not to support the LCC Marching Band in raising money to go to the inauguration. He said it was because they were going to see President Obama and he had destroyed the coal industry. To begin with, that’s not true. The price of natural gas is what has caused the coal industry to be in the shape it is now in, plus it’s always been a boom and bust business. There have been dozens of articles in the paper about that. Like it or not, Obama is the President of the United States and this is an opportunity these kids will only get once in their lives. They will treasure it forever. I have a child in the LCC band and I just hope the mayor and city council saw this cruel and vicious comment.

.

To a certain person: Happy new year. I hope this finds you well. I’m sorry I called you the other night pretending to love and miss and need you in my life for several hours on the phone. I did not mean any of it and I know that was wrong. I also think it was wrong to ask you for money. I recognize that as erratic and unkind behavior. I’ll wire you the $110 dollars plus the $400 I owe you from November. It meant a lot to have money for cigarettes, beer and food through New Year’s Day. Thank You.

.

M dad said that during World War II they put a tax on luxury items such as jewelry to help pay for the war. We presently have a trillion dollar war. Conservative Republicans propose paying for it with Social Security tax money and Medicare tax money. The trillion-dollar war is what is causing the deficit not old people drawing Social Security.

.

I just saw that gas permits in the county have gone way down and I imagine that’s because natural gas is so abundant in more accessible places. I also saw that the price of natural gas is down again, which must make it mighty appealing to utilities which have been depending on coal — a much more expensive fuel. It seems to me that this combination of things is ominous for this area, both for the seriously negative effect on coal mining, and for the double hit to the severance tax income, which is so critical. I don’t see a solution to this situation, and I doubt that those smarter than me do either. But I do think it points out one thing loudly and clearly, and that is that whatever funds we have should be used only for things that are absolutely essential. Any plans for programs or facilities that are just ‘nice to have’ should be abandoned and every program currently being funded should be reviewed for funding cuts. It’s time for the government to get really frugal and thrifty. It’s a matter of survival.

Whether the lady with the water complaint was right or wrong is not relevant. Neither is Frankfort’s official opinion of her. The issue is how the Letcher Fiscal Court and other government offi cials treat the people they work for and who pay their salaries. Anyone appearing at one of those sessions deserves respect from those officials and for the officials to act with dignity. Smirking and giggling has no place at such a function.
