I would be willing to bet just about anything that the people who complain the loudest about the new Letcher County Recreation Center being a waste of taxpayers’ money are selfish individuals who could care less about their own health, much less the health of others. With the cost of healthcare continuing to skyrocket and the fact that eastern Kentucky is always on the list of the least healthy places in America, you would think most people would welcome a nice facility like the rec center. And if you think people aren’t using it, you obviously haven’t driven by there after dark and seen the full parking lot. Although I should be using the facility, I do not. Still, I support it wholeheartedly and fully understand its importance in building a better quality of life in Letcher County.

To a certain person: It was cruel hearted of you to abandon me in Whitesburg without anywhere to go or stay the night. Nothing was open except for the Mexican restaurant where I sat and cried. A special thanks to the waiter who made me a flower out of aluminum foil. That was a very kindhearted gesture.

.

Was the wire found in that man’s back yard from Roxana or River Road? Our phone service has been off a lot more than it has been on. What is the problem here, and why can’t the law do something about this? These thieves wouldn’t be able to operate if they couldn’t sell this stuff, so why isn’t the law after the ones who are buying it?

.

Have you ever tried to drive around the Letcher County Courthouse lately? If you haven’t, you’re in luck. If you have, then you have seen all the people who park illegally and clog up the street. Most who park illegally are police officers or county officials who are so arrogant they’ll even park in front of a fire hydrant, on a yellow line, or in a spot reserved for the physically handicapped. This kind of hypocrisy on the part of our police and public officials drives those of us who have to obey the law crazy. Can’t something be done about this mess? The mayor should instruct the city police to start enforcing simple traffic laws in downtown Whitesburg.

I have tried to call Speak Your Piece, but kept getting a message that said leave your phone number and we will return your call. Everyone else can get through and I can’t. What is the deal? I still like Speak Your Piece though.

(There was a problem with the outgoing message tape on the answering machine. We think we’ve got it fixed now.)

Regarding the mug shot on the front page of last week’s Mountain Eagle of the suspect charged with making meth, that is the silliest looking look I have ever seen on anybody. Talk about a cooked goose, he is. And his shirt, it is so laughable I had to share that with my friend. He has been bad — very, very bad. It was cool.

.

To Superintendent Craft and members of the Letcher County Board of Education: As a former resident of Letcher County, I know how hard you have worked for the betterment of the students in Letcher County. I know that you were the key components in getting the new school and all the amenities the students there now have available to them. Knowing all this is also why I was so appalled wit the behavior I witnessed in Berea recently, where I went to watch a Letcher County Central boys’ basketball game. The coach, Robert Hammonds, berated and verbally abused every player that got in the game. Coach Hammonds was so disrespectful to his players that I felt sorry for them and their parents who had to watch and hear their children being treated in this manner. I know the progress you have made in the school system, but no coach should be allowed to treat high school students in such a manner. After what I saw at Berea, it didn’t surprise me to learn that Coach Hammonds was suspended for a few games and fined after berating a referee in the same manner I saw him treat his players. It also didn’t surprise me to learn about how much better the Cougars played during his too-short absence.

.

Talk about a badger. The very first comment in last week’s Speak Your Piece was talking about people with yellow-stained teeth and no teeth at all. They can afford a cigarette habit, but they can’t afford dentures. Well, you are the very person who is supporting a manmade face, meaning false teeth. And you probably have on too much makeup, enough to fill in a ’40-model Dodge. You are shutting down other people. Some people just can’t help it. Some people can. Obviously you just can’t help downing other people.

.

I can’t believe all the lemonheads in Letcher County who are shooting down the kids that are getting to go see the President. It’s not about what the President has done or what he is going to do, it’s because he is the President. The lemonheads should be thankful that our kids are going. It’s the President. It doesn’t matter if it is Abe Lincoln or Barack Obama.

.

I wish the City of Jenkins would enforce the city ordinance of no parking on the hardtop in Cottage Row in Dunham. Everyone has a driveway to park in. You can’t get through there for cars parking on the road.

.

Dear Speak Your Piece: I heard that Governor Beshear said he is going to shut down the pill mills in Kentucky. That means he is going to scare or brainwash all of the doctors into not doing their job of taking care of people with pain problems or chronic pain problems. I never voted for Beshear for one reason — he is going to cause our power bills to go up because of the payoff he took from big utilities. It is a shame we cannot elect an honest person to a political position in this country. As far as the pain pill problem, you will never get rid of it. If they can’t get it in Kentucky, they will go to Tennessee or Georgia or somewhere else. Mexico has been shipping pills in here too. When people can get a Lorcet in Mexico for 25 cents, then bring it back to Kentucky and sell it for $10, you are going to have a hell of a time stopping that business.

.

I called my friend who is blonde at 3 a.m. the other day and asked her if she knew why blondes have more fun. She said no. Blondes have more fun because they make people laugh. When people make people laugh, people like them. That’s why blondes have more fun. And when I called a blonde at 3 a.m., she didn’t gripe at me.

.

The phone company came and fixed the lines and they stole them again that night. I don’t know why they even wait until dark anymore, because nobody is going to do anything to them. I know things are bad here now and jobs probably won’t come back. I just hope we don’t start having roving bands of thieves stealing and selling and plenty of markets buying. I hope it doesn’t get worse. I heard someone was caught with burned wire in his backyard. How is that going to work out?

.

Letcher County has some problems, and the biggest one isn’t the evaporation of the coal business. Far larger is its lawless reputation. Any business or industry of any substance does a thorough background check of an area before moving in and investing in it. A check which showed the citizens rushing about identifying their valuables because they are vulnerable to being stolen, and which revealed that communications is erratic and undependable because telephone lines are regularly taken and sold for their copper content, would not give a favorable impression. Most of those getting such a report wouldn’t even visit the place, let alone subject their employees and families to it. There has to be a huge house-cleaning of crime and corruption, far better law enforcement, and an establishment of order before there can be any improvement.

.

To the people at the nursing home who have accused me of certain things: My prayers are with you and I think God will work things out. God bless you and I will keep you in my prayers. I think the nurse who gave my wife Phenergan that night should come forward. I hope the Lord brings her to confession.

.

It’s a doggone shame that you can’t sit your house shoes on the porch without those old dogs down the street carrying them off. We don’t have a dogcatcher that is fit for anything. He has been called and called. He doesn’t care. He takes his pay, but he doesn’t want to do his job. I am sick and tired of those dogs. I don’t have a dog out in the yard or a dog bothering anybody. It’s a rotten shame that others do, and I am sick of it. I hope you read this, Mr. Dogcatcher.

.

I am pleased that the LCCHS band and JROTC will participate in the inaugural parade in Washington, D.C. It will be a unique, historical and educational experience that they will treasure for a lifetime. However, I am thoroughly disgusted with the school board’s actions in all of this. I could understand if they had invited the public to share with expenses, but to try to hoodwink the public into thinking they have to fit the bill for the children to go is down right deception. Board members evidently can’t separate fact from fiction. Too bad all of the incumbents didn’t lose their seats in the last election.

.

People act so self righteously on Facebook. They’ll get on there and complain that parents are being hateful with their children, then they blame parents for letting their children act a certain way with other people’s children. How do you know these parents know anything about this? The fact of the matter is that nobody is perfect in this world. No one is a perfect parent and no children are perfect, either. If everyone would just mind their own business, take care of themselves and their own children, this world would be a better place.

.

I would like to wish a very happy birthday to a man in Indiana.

.

They say people will steal anything, but I can’t imagine why anyone would steal a book out of my car. I was pondering that. I have had stuff stolen before, but a book? I’m 62 and had a book in the back of my car and someone stole it. Is there a market for used books that have no value?

.

You can be indicted for taping some things and playing them if they catch you, or you can be sued. What I do is I tape some radio programs on WMMT and then I listen to the tapes. I have done this for several years and I hope they never catch me. Some programs are memorable. You can tape good things and listen to them for years afterwards.

.

You are still my angel and I love you.

.

It’s a shame all of these out-of-work coalminers are having to accept unemployment, especially since Obama is the one who said they got longterm unemployment and they draw more than most people make working. It is sad that people complain when they are drawing more than the working people make. A friend of mine said her brother who is out of work in the coalmines was taking $365 a week. A lot of working people don’t take home near that. The people who work get nothing but a hard time.

.

Businesses say they can’t find people to work. It’s just that they can’t find people to work for what they pay many times. Many times being on the draw pays more than work. I had a boss who said the secretary quit because getting on the draw paid more. It never occurred to him that when you work and draw food stamps, your employer isn’t paying you properly. It never occurred to my boss that most businesses should pay a living wage.

.

I want to talk about that Alabama and Notre Dame game about a week ago. About a week before that game was played, I was watching ESPN and saw a Notre Dame T-shirt that said ‘The Golden Domers vs. The Mobile Homers.’ I just wanted to tell Notre Dame that it looks like the mobile homers stomped a mud hole in the behinds of the ‘Golden Domers.’ They aren’t remotely in the same ballpark as Alabama. Alabama will be back there next year defending that same title. Notre Dame will be lucky to be in the playoffs. When you start running your mouth the way Notre Dame did over that T-shirt, you get mud stomped on your hind end.

.

Happy birthday to several people during the month of January. They are: Linda Brown, Michelle Murphy, Shanna Frazier, done past. Yet to come: Debra Pack, our sister-in-law, little Skyler Barron, Charles Pack our nephew. Thank you, Stanley David Pack.

.

One community probably had less than one month’s telephone service in 2012 because thieves stole the lines so often. Other communities had the same problem. A lot of people have had to resort to cell telephones, although they don’t have good coverage in many areas. Many other items have been stolen and burglaries have become almost commonplace. The thieves who steal, and those who buy the stolen goods apparently are doing so without much hindrance or trouble. Everyone is aware of this situation. Why isn’t the law doing something about this intolerable activity? They understand their responsibility. When are they going to get involved?

.

The City of Whitesburg has had many good ideas over the years, including the one-hour parking rule on Main Street. Like pretty much everything else, however, this rule is no longer being enforced and the same cars can be found hogging all the parking places on Main Street pretty much 24 hours a day. I like our police officers and hate to criticize them, but they really need to make people respect the one-hour rule a little bit better than they are now doing.

.

Recently I went into a public place of business to pawn my shotgun and the language was so filthy I told the clerk to just give my gun back as I am not going to do business with people who allow ungodly language and take my God’s name in vain. So I took my business to the next county. I think a business should have a little respect for their customers and not be using profanity. God still has some people here that don’t want to hear ungodly language. It is a sad time in America when our military chaplains are told not to pray in the name of Jesus because it might offend some heathen religion. I would like to say if you don’t pray in the name of Jesus then you may as well spit in the wind, for God does not hear your prayer if it is not prayed in Jesus’ name. Who do you think the real God’s name is? His name is Jesus, for Jesus is the God that created the heavens and the Earth. The most discriminated against people in our society is the Christian people. The lying ACLU organization doesn’t want Jesus people to go to school. I have news for the ACLU. If I went to school, Jesus would go with me for He lives in me. We don’t take our God off and on like the hypocrites and pagan religions do. Our God lives in us. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

.

Have the local newspapers and the local radio stations jumped on the fundraising bandwagon to send the LCCHS band and ROTC to Washington? Don’t get me wrong, I love it that they have been selected, but has anyone asked the school board why fundraising is necessary? Don’t we have any investigative reports left in Letcher County? Anyone associated with the school system will tell you that the funds are available for unexpected educational purposes. The school board and school leaders encouraging people to stand on street corners and highway intersections with a tin cup in their hand (figuratively speaking) is both a disgrace and outrageous. When will we say enough is enough? The answer is never. The Letcher County electorate is not well educated and is easily manipulated. The school board intends to keep it that way.

.

A lot of questions need to be answered about the catching of the man in possession of the burned telephone wire. Who caught him, the state police or sheriff ’s deputies? Did someone turn him in? From whom did he get the telephone wire, and where did that person get it? How, and with what scrap yard was he planning to sell it? Did he have an agreement to sell it?
