I think it is truly amazing people can go to the food pantry, get free food and have the nerve to not smile and be friendly. These volunteers are working with aching muscles and sore joints. I would like to have the opportunity to pick up free groceries once or twice a month. We’re forgetting how much time, effort and money they are putting into being volunteers at the food pantry.

.

Mountain Boy, your Kansas sister-in-law thanks you. Your brother and I enjoy our Mountain Eagle.

The post office must be having lots of troubles. In Whitesburg they’ve got a pallet holding the door together now. It looks like we are living in the ghetto. Maybe the post office could afford to fix the doors to their buildings if they didn’t have all of those commercials on TV saying ‘I don’t have to the post office anymore and I can get my stamps right here.’

.

To a certain woman: I’m sorry your ex-husband didn’t fill your dreams for you, but I’m glad your dreams have come true. And I hope you will always be happy.

.

Go back a few generations and you will find that folks started out building a tiny house, perhaps a tenfeet by 20-feet or a 16-feet by 24-feet. Then they’d live in that and build onto it as finances allowed — maybe one room a year. And everything was paid for as it was built. Today folks just go buy a $40,000 mobile home, fi- nance it for a total of $80,000 and spend the rest of their lives paying on something they will never own. Now which approach makes more sense? And there’s something else to consider. People tend to take better care of something if they have a lot of blood, sweat and tears invested in it. Build yourself a small house and don’t worry about keeping up with the Joneses. In a few years you will have a nice home, that is paid for and you won’t be a slave to the system. The older generations had credit too. They simply knew better than to use it.

.

To a certain nurse: Why don’t you leave your exhusband alone and let him have a life?

.

I’m an 88-year-old man and I watched the Letcher Fiscal Court meetings on the government channel and I have never seen anything like how they spend taxpayers’ dollars. County Judge Jim Ward must think he is governor of the state when it comes to our tax dollars. Don’t you all ever cover these things and see what is going on? It is a shame and a disgrace with how you are letting Jim Ward get away with spending our taxpayers’ money.

(The Mountain Eagle has covered nearly every meeting of the Letcher Fiscal Court or its predecessors since our founding in 1908. And that’s a lot of court meetings.)

.

Hey, neighbor. All those problems you have been having, I have put a hex on you. I am fixing to turn up the heat and it is going to get worse.

.

To everybody out there: There is no more common courtesy in this world, at least where I am from. I have noticed that everyone just wants to sit and blame this and blame that. Somebody lashes out and hurts people. They need to blame themselves. Some people don’t take well to being condescended to or talked down to or just made to feel insignificant. Respect is a big thing to a lot of people.

.

People, we get it already. Some of you don’t like the new recreation center. What do you think the county should do, just tear it down and refuse to pay for it? Personally, I have never used the rec center one time but I believe it would be okay if our coal severance taxes were used for nothing else but to finance the rec center and water and sewer lines. If we’re going to cut waste, there are many other places we can look at before the rec center. I also get sick of the callers who are trying to convince others the center was built only for the people of Whitesburg. That’s a bunch of bull and the callers know it. They’re just trying to get the people divided to further their own negative cause. People who do that type of thing make me sick to my stomach. Causing trouble apparently excites them.

.

To a certain person: I can’t understand why my life would warrant discussion or gossip. My conquests and accomplishments are minimal. It’s like some new false language I can’t understand. Maybe I wasn’t really listening. You see, I don’t speak to you for the sake of speaking. I speak from the heart. That’s why I have nothing to say to you. It’s amusing that you consider yourself some great reward, oh so beautiful, precious and astounding. And if I cause you to strengthen your life it’s because I deem yours worthless and I think nothing of chewing you up and spitting you out because I consider you nothing. You always said you would be there with outstretched hands enclosed in mine to pick me up when I fell down. You knew some day I wouldn’t be there. I just couldn’t stand to see you disrespect yourself, destroy yourself, and destroy me with you.

.

Wayne Fleming, don’t let Jim Ward outsmart you. He thinks he is on top of the world and can tell everyone what to do. Wayne, you are much smarter than he is. Don’t let him get the best of you.

.

I’d like to know what you have to do to get your comment put in Speak Your Piece. I called in and I emailed it and it wasn’t in here. Either you are a bastion of free speech or you are not.

(What was your comment?)

.

Here’s what is on my mind. It’s garbage. I thought everybody in Letcher County had to pay to have their garbage picked up — if they had electricity, they had a garbage bill. Well then, why in the name of God when we go down the road do we see these trucks and car tops full of garbage that attracts rats and dogs? I thought we had magistrates who wanted to keep this county clean. They better be getting on the ball, because it is becoming springtime and I’ve never seen so much garbage and trash in front of the big highways. Everybody sees it. You all are going to have to get on the ball and get something done.

.

I hope everyone who watched the fiscal court meeting noticed how Jim Ward tried to silence Wayne Fleming. He gets offensive when anyone asks him anything. Look how he is treating the general public. I just hope these people can remember how he is treating everybody. As for the magistrates, you’ve got Keith Adams and Bobby Howard waiting for Jim to tell them how to vote while Codell Gibson sits there playing with his pencil. Wayne Fleming and Terry Adams know what is going on, but they just get shot down by Jim Ward.

.

Where are the photos of the sheriff ’s department vehicles that park in the handicap parking at LCC? I saw a guy taking pictures one day of one parked beside the ‘no parking after 3 p.m.’ sign. How can a deputy tell someone else they are breaking the law when so many witness them breaking laws? And not just parking laws but many others — speeding, littering and driving while on the phone?

.

I am a married man. I have two children and five grandchildren and I appreciate Wayne Fleming for trying to watch over the people of Letcher County. I appreciate Wayne Fleming for not trying to pass on this debt that could possibly result in a tax raise in Letcher County.

.

Way to go, Wayne Fleming. I am all for what you are saying. It seems like you are the only one who speaks up and asks questions.

.

This is question for Codell Gibson. Why do you bother coming to the fiscal court meetings? All you do is sit and twiddle your thumbs. You never, ever mention your district at all. And whenever there is a vote to cast, you always look at Keith or one of the others to see how they are voting. Enjoy your seat now. You won’t be there taking up space on the next term.

.

I have two little girls and there is no way I would ever leave my girls in a situation with a guy who could sexually abuse or rape them, especially if one of the girls had autism.

.

We sure do have a lot of fun at the senior citizens center in Boone Fork. We had a potluck and it is one of our favorites. We have a lot of women who attend and it seems like they flock after this gentleman who drives a GMC truck. I believe he lives in the McRoberts area. It may be because he is clean-shaven. I’m just trying to find out what his secret is.

.

It was good to see the mock bus crash, because it’s only a matter of time until the bus that runs in Doty either turns over in the creek or runs over somebody.

.

I wonder if they still put pictures on milk cartons. We seem to have lost Jenkins Mayor G.C. Kincer and we need his picture put on milk cartons as a missing person. If you could have that done, we would appreciate it.

.

Columnist Lenore Skenazy’s brain has been affected by too many visits to Taco Bell, therefore messing with her judgment. It only takes a few seconds for a child to be abducted, and this mom was lucky this time. Both the mom and Ms. Skenazy need to wise up. Betty.

The country’s largest mining companies are in a steady decline and this is reflected in their stock prices. Arch Coal, which sold for more than $36 two years ago, is priced today at $5.29 per share. James River Coal Company, which sold for $27 two years ago, now goes for $2.60 a share. The others have had similar declines. The stock market’s opinion of these companies is probably the most accurate and objective indicator of this industry available because investors aren’t emotional. They are only interested in seeing things as realistically as possible, and in preserving and increasing their money. If they thought there was any future for this industry they would be stampeding these stocks at these low prices, but they aren’t interested. This is just another good reason to believe that mining in this area is not going to rebound, and that the need for getting other types of employment is urgent. It is a matter of economic survival.

.

I’d like to know what went with all the money us pet lovers put toward an animal shelter. I wish someone would explain that to me, because I put a lot of money in there and we still don’t have a shelter.

.

If I heard right at the Letcher Fiscal Court meeting, the recreation center made $2,000 in January. If that turns out to be typical of 2013, the income for the year will be about $24,000, which is less than half what it made last year. That makes Magistrate Fleming’s suggestion that, instead of spending the $60,000 the center made last year, we set it aside in a fund to cover years where the rec center might not break even. I don’t understand why the fiscal court voted that down.

.

These churches go across the seas and help people over there, but here in Kentucky and Virginia we have people who really need money. Yet they will take it across the seas and give it away. The churches should think about their own country. I believe in helping other people, but you need to look at your own state first.

.

Our county judge doesn’t seem to have studied much arithmetic. We’re going to be paying $600,000 a year for 30 years for the recreation center loan, but he doesn’t think that comes to eighteen million dollars. Multiply it out. We will end up paying for the seven-million dollar center more than two and a half times before it’s paid off. And what’s wrong with taking the $300,000 we apparently have sitting in a fund today and using it to pay down the loan? Over the thirty years of the loan, paying that $300,000 now, while we have it, will end up saving us $770,000 over the life of the loan. That sounds like a good deal to me. And I don’t buy the judge’s statement about earning interest on it instead of using it to pay down the loan. Interest rates are pitiful now, as we all know, and there is no way we could earn a rate even approaching the rate we’re paying on that loan. Any financial advisor would say to pay down the loan every chance we get.

.

To the officials in Neon and Jenkins: Don’t you think you need to get some beer and whiskey licenses? We let have let that money go to Pound, Wise and Norton for the last 50 years. There is no reason why you shouldn’t get some money to work with since the coal severance is gone. Think about it.

.

Politician like to talk about using Kentucky people for Kentucky jobs, yet Senator Mitch McConnell hired a New York polling company to phone people in eastern Kentucky. New Yorkers talk with such accents that people had a hard time understanding what they were talking about. If you are going to poll Kentuckians, you should at least get people who speak Kentucky English.

.

Still missing my all black, male Chihuahua with a white chest only. He answers to Kibbles. He could be in between the Whitesburg and Jenkins area. If anyone has any information leading to his safe return home or his whereabouts, they will be greatly appreciated and extremely rewarded. Please call 606-634-6910 or 632-8980.

On February 19, there was no injustice done in that courtroom. I know the boy that was accused of supposedly raping the 11-year-old girl. He has not nor would he ever touch a young girl or anyone else for that matter. His life has been put on hold severely. He has a child. He has a mother who has cried her eyes out. He has family and friends who stood by him. We know for a fact that he did not do what he was charged with. It just goes to show there are people who believe the truth when it comes out. Justice was served on our behalf. I am a family friend of the man and his mother. I am here to tell you with a 100 percent guarantee he did not do this nor would he ever. If people don’t quit making lies up against him, they can go back to court for slander.

.

I’m glad we have Missouri and Texas A&M in the Southeastern Conference. I think they are two fine schools. They are very competitive and it is only going to help the SEC in recruiting. It is a win/win right there. They have made the SEC proud. I am proud of them.

.

The judge broke the rules of court on February 18 when he voted before the vote even started. Judges are supposed to vote last, so as to not influence the vote of others, probably. This is a loosely run court, with numerous violations, and with the exception of one magistrate, little interest in making it otherwise. It’s a long time until election. I don’t know whether things will hold together that long, or not.

.

If they want to cut the budget, how come they never talk about cutting out the money they give the oil companies and General Electric? Of course, they deserve it because they do research and they do all of these things to earn money from the federal government. Poor people are stuck to work at convenient stores.

.

My wife and I are disabled senior citizens. I would like to beg the sheriff ’s department to please sit at the Mayking Post Office and write tickets to non-handicapped people parking in the handicapped spots. This would mean a lot to us. Thank you so much.

.

Wasn’t anybody but me knocked off their feet by the figures Wayne Fleming gave on the Letcher County Recreation Center? Apparently, the PVA shared with him that a whole year’s taxes in Letcher County, from about 11,000 taxpayers, is only about $550,000. So if severance tax disappears, like it looks like it’s going to do, then the county will have to more than double people’s taxes to cover the rec center payments. What’s more, with coal dying, a lot of people are probably going to leave Letcher County for other places, which means we won’t have even 11,000 taxpayers and $550,000 coming in. Folks, it’s time to start looking for solutions before the calamity hits us, not keep puffing off how wonderful the rec center is. It might be great, but if we can’t afford it, then we’re in a heck of a pickle, and it’s by no means sure we can raise the taxes to pay for it.

.

This president should be impeached, as he has destroyed this nation’s economy. He has brought a reproach on our nation by defying God’s laws and promoting the abomination of men lying with men. Sin will take you to hell. The nation that forgets God shall be turned into hell. He thinks he can send drones and kill any American citizen for supporting terrorists while he himself is supporting them, and our lying news media still supports him. The American people need to keep their guns and they need some anti-aircraft artillery to shoot down all the drones that our government sends out to destroy law-abiding citizens. The nation that forgets God shall be turned into hell.

.

I don’t think God has anything to do with putting a man and woman together. After you sleep with each other you end up trapped. You get adjusted to it, and then you discover it wasn’t real love in the first place. Then you walk away, just like I did. And I’m very glad I did. Walking away is the best move I ever made.

.

With a new Letcher County School Board in place maybe its members will look at the facts concerning the four-year record of Letcher County Central boys’ basketball Coach Robert Hammonds: Sixty-seven wins with fiftyfive losses for a winning percentage of less than fifty-five percent. Coach Hammonds has not won a single 53rd District title. Letcher County taxpayers are paying one of the highest salaries in the state of Kentucky for a basketball coach and our boys aren’t even going to be in the 14th Regional tournament our high school is hosting. Coach Hammonds needs to be replaced now.

.

Last night he said to me, ‘This is a man who means it when he says he needs your love. I need it more than the world.’ I said, ‘I need it too. But love is not only good.’ He said, “That’s right. Elizabethans like Mr. Shakespeare knew that love is also a destroyer. So true. So true. Maybe we should try to destroy one another.’ I told him, ‘We already are.’ And then he said, ‘ You beautiful woman. God, I need (you). I do. I do.’

.

To the man in the silver Chevrolet truck: Won’t you be man enough to rev up your engine at me instead of my wife? Aren’t you man enough to control your crazy wife and keep her from sending my wife messages and talking about my child? We found out your daughter lied out of it and you all lied for her. She’s just as guilty. Is that why you all are going to her church? Did you all get run off the last church for being hypocrites? You all running around talking about my wife shows what hypocrites you are.

.

To the black- haired woman who contacted the woman whose kid got into an argument with her kid: Inappropriate words were said. I was shocked that woman didn’t floor you. She’s very protective of her children. I’d say you are on her crap list. I have known her a long time. If I were you, I would avoid her at all costs.

.

Having been an avid reader of The Mountain Eagle since 1950, I was fascinated by the recent account of Tom and Pat Gish’s first seven years as owners, publishers, and editors of The Mountain Eagle. The landscape of Letcher County seemed to be changing rapidly. However, some things never change. The coal industry will always experience a ‘boom or bust’ cycle. Letcher County politics will never change, only the names and faces. Like in many eastern Kentucky school districts, if you aspire to be superintendant, you first have to find some school board candidates and get them elected. We all know the drill. The advent of KERA in the late ’80s was supposed to change all of this. The Letcher County School System promptly resisted any change. We resisted school councils, resisted testing provisions, restricted resource centers, resisted everything. By the mid ’90s mismanagement became so rampant that the State Department of Education made Letcher County the first school system to come under state control. We were basically declared academically bankrupt. Fortunately, some newly elected board members worked diligently to get us released from state control in a very short period of time.
