I saw on the news where TECO Coal laid off 32 more men on account of not being able to comply with environmental regulations. I like that Obama is a man of his word. Before he got into office he said he would regulate the coal industry out of business, and he has stood by that. He is a man of his word. He said he was going to put coal out and he has done it.

.

The power company is anxious to get money from you paying higher power bills, but it is awful lazy about doing its job. These trees in Whitco have grown up around these power lines to the point it is dangerous. It is a wonder that one of these kids hasn’t gotten electrocuted. Power company, why don’t you get on the job and get out here and cut some of these trees out from the power lines? I’d hate to see someone get electrocuted because someone is too lazy to do their job. I pay my power bill. I’m sure other people pay their power bills, too. I’m sure you get paid for every day you work. Cut these trees from the power lines. We sure would appreciate it.

.

I don’t understand why you can spend $10,000 on football helmets but you can’t hire a teacher to educate our children when a classroom has already been built for that position. This does not make any sense to me. What in the world is going on?

.

To a certain person: I love you and I always will. And you are still my angel.

.

I’m not a cat.

.

All of my hippie life I have been told by preachers, ministers, rabbis and priests that nothing is impossible with God — that God can do anything. When they tell me God did not lie, I tell them God did not save a sinner. If you die in your sins, where I go you cannot come unless you ask for forgiveness and you are saved by grace and you are no longer a sinner.

Therefore, God saves those who no longer sin, not sinners as they sin. I give you this to think about in order that you may avoid Alzheimer’s disease.

.

Can God make a rock so heavy He cannot lift it? Please answer in next week’s Speak Your Piece. I think upon these things. This is the Midnight Phantom. Have a great day.

.

I want to wish Austin James Dwayne Coomer a happy big 16th birthday from his Mamaw Jackie.

.

Did you know that if you get a receipt for something you paid for, some people may say it is no good? If you don’t have a headline at the top of the receipt stating that it is from a big legitimate company, it won’t be accepted. It’s no good even though you bought it and the seller signed it. I just want people to be aware. If you pay rent and it doesn’t have renter properties and who it is from, they can say you didn’t pay it even though you did. I’d like to get a little bit of feedback on this. If you read the law it says a receipt is acceptable, but in some cases if it goes into court it is not acceptable? Is that right or is that wrong?

.

Let’s laugh my friends and enemies, too/We all knew what Obama would do/Now that Obamacare has come to pass/We will all be taken care of/That’s a laugh/And there is this thing called the IRS/They told all of us to kiss their ass/Let’s laugh my friends, my enemies, too/Inflation is gone according to the Washington view/Now about coal mining and fossil fuels/It was the backbone of America/ Now what can we do?/ Let’s laugh my friends, my enemies, too/Sodom and Gomorrah had the same moral values as most Americans do/Let’s laugh to keep from crying.

.

If a certain big gal in Jenkins would get up and walk a little and quit riding that side-by-side, she might lose 150 pounds.

.

I just wonder how it feels for a certain woman to party with a bunch of men when she was already pregnant. I guess that is the reason why she can’t show her face out in the public and the reason she is going to sell out and move where nobody knows who she is.

.

This is a concerned citizen of Whitesburg. I thought that in a workplace environment, as the old saying goes, the requirement is that no shoes or no shirt means no service. I know a case worse than that. There is one woman who doesn’t wear shoes while working at one certain restaurant. This needs to be looked into. That is very, very unsanitary.

.

Meow. I’m not a cat.

.

Could you tell me why County Judge Jim Ward is always on the government channel campaigning? How can he use our taxpayers’ money to campaign on the TV station that we are paying for? You know that isn’t right. He has taken every advantage that he can. Jim Ward is just another man spending our taxpayers’ money like it is going out of style.

.

To certain people: Which one of you is starting these lies on me? Surely it wouldn’t be anyone’s own daughter, but if it is I’ll wash my hands of you. If it is that slut, she knows where she can go.

.

I’d just like to know what happened to the deal of getting rid of these constables. They just lie around at the house doing nothing. I thought we were going to get rid of them since we don’t need them. I guess not. We better keep them since that is money well spent.

.

This is the girl that’s looking for her ex. I’m walking down toward Arby’s listening to my iPod. It’s a picture without you. I still want to get together and talk to you, sweetie. This is a girl who lived at Whitaker. I remember when we broke up at the American Legion. You went your way and I went mine. Only you left with my sister, but I forgive you and I love you and I will always love you. Listen to George Jones and you will know what I mean. I do want to see you again. You’ll always be in my heart. Love always, B.H.

.

People, come on. I read a Speak Your Piece about someone wanting to call into UNITE about someone drawing SSI. People, please, don’t show your ignorance.

.

If you allow a person to have one minute to speak what is on their mind then how in the heck can these idiots take up the whole page with mindless bull? It is not even worth reading. It is not even worth a glance.

.

Why use the word opponent? Deputy Val Breeding is not trying to take anyone’s husband or boyfriend. She just had a legitimate question at the school board meeting so we won’t have another Columbine massacre. So get over yourself and kiss it.

.

To a certain person: Why don’t you stop calling in your comments about the school board? Just because she didn’t get you what she promised, now you are mad that you have waited a year. Cry her hands full and thank her.

.

To the stupid trash who keeps commenting to the blonde in the black car: I’d like to see you say that stuff to her face. She would beat you down like a redheaded stepchild. You make such a fool of yourself.

.

To Ms. Lizzie Craft, who died at 83 years old: Lizzie, you were a mother to a whole lot of people and I love you. To all of the little children on Kentucky River, you were precious. I’ll see you at the great white throne on Judgment.

.

To the blonde in the silver car: When you were married, he didn’t even have to leave the nest. He had free accommodations there. Think about that.

.

This is from a mother who is concerned about her daughter who lives in Whitesburg: The boy who got her pregnant walked off and left her. He is no good and he never will be any good. I’m getting sick and tired of him hurting my daughter. He has a beautiful little boy and something is going to have to be done or he is going to get hurt. This man thinks he’s perfect, but no one is perfect. The boy will pay if he doesn’t start helping my daughter.

.

Hey, people out there. I love all of you. Have you seen those commercials saying that hair can grow on a baldheaded man? That isn’t true. If it were, Donald Trump would have had a head of hair from here to Whitesburg. So keep your money in your pockets.

.

To that special man of mine at Little Sandy: I want you to know I love you and I miss you. We’ve talked about me putting this is Speak Your Piece, so hopefully you will get to see it. Love always, your little mama.

.

To the woman who keeps commenting to the woman in the black car: You really are pathetic. Why do you go to church when you lie the way you do? You really wrote the book on hypocrisy. If I were you I would be more worried about what people say about you being obsessed with your exhusband and all. You are such a lame piece of youknow what.

.

Way to go, Valarie Breeding. By the way, Deputy Sheriff Breeding did not disrupt any meeting. Sometimes you’ve just got to get a little loud during the school board meetings just to be heard. I think Robert Kiser and the others should be afraid when all of us parents come up there and give them the same thing if they keep on spending $10,000 and $15,000 on football helmets and whatever else on the football field. Everyone knew before the high school was opened that there were not enough textbooks. That was six years ago. They will never have enough money for textbooks, because they waste it on athletics instead of investing it on education. Way to go, Val.

.

Hey Mama. I know why you ride a two-seater now. A one-seater isn’t big enough.

.

This is for all drivers in the world. If you see a sign that says merge left, right lane ends, and then you see a diagram of the right lane ending, chances are the right lane is going to end. You aren’t going to have that lane to drive on anymore. So if you see that and you are still driving in the right lane and there is somebody on your left and you are getting nervous, guess whose fault it is? It is yours. The right lane ends. Geez, Louise.

.

This fellow attended Whitesburg High School. He quit school early so he could help his widowed mother. He never did help her so she had to go in the work field while he went up and down the road in his Firebird. He later worked at a few jobs, but griped all of the time he worked because he didn’t want to do it. He supposedly hurt his back and was declared disabled so he could obtain a check. He has a bully attitude. I don’t know how he has friends with his attitude unless his friends are like he is. He is a waste to mankind who only a mother or a wife could possibly love.

.

I just don’t see how a certain woman could put her picture on Facebook and advertise herself with everybody knowing what she has done and what she has been with. I think I would be ashamed if I were her.

.

There is a certain lady who manages a certain business in the Whitesburg area. She has forgotten where she came from. She came from a head of a hollow in a surrounding county. I know because I went to school with her. She now acts as if she doesn’t know anybody — as if she lives in a big city and has forgotten where she comes from.

.

To a certain person: Quit telling everyone that you are dying from cancer. Everyone knows what is wrong with you. It’s pills, pills, pills.

.

I have to agree with that fellow who commented in Speak Your Piece last week about everyone needing to swing by the courthouse to thank Jim Ward. I think we also need to swing by the gas company and thank those men and women along with Jim Ward for keeping the lights on in Letcher County with natural gas.

.

What happened to the recreational vehicle park at Fishpond? We need a county judge who won’t let the EQT gas company get away with not honoring its promise concerning the RV park.

.

I want to comment on the condition of two of our state roads. Kentucky Highway 805 from Neon to Jenkins is full of potholes. There are holes large enough to knock a car out of alignment and burst tires. The holes could also cause accidents. I know the state highway department is aware of the holes and rough roads, so why hasn’t something been done to repair Route 805? If you are not aware of the condition of this section of road, then I suggest you drive that stretch of road and see for yourselves. The other road is U.S. Highway 119, the Payne Gap road. There are many areas where a person could wreck by hitting those large potholes. Why would the state invite tourists to our area and then treat them to potholes and rough roads due to improper patching? They don’t smooth out the asphalt when they patch. I know Frankfort would not approve of driving on roads like ours. Maybe our politicians could get something done. I know money is an issue, but the safety of our highways should be a priority.

.

The power company is once again asking the Kentucky Public Service Commission to grant an enormous rate increase. I know the power company has a great deal of influence with our elected officials, so why would they betray the coal industry by refusing to ask our officials to stand up and fight back at the Obama administration and EPA? These power companies have reaped great wealth at the expense of our mines, so why is this a good time to surrender and ignore the fact that our people and our region will be devastated if the war on coal is allowed to continue? If Mr. Obama wants to do something worthwhile, then let him give millions of dollars to support the efforts to develop clean-burning coal. My dad worked 44 years mining coal. He died from black lung disease. He and all the others helped fuel the factories which produced the goods that made the U.S.A. the greatest country on earth. Without coal we could not have won the wars we fought. If not for coal, we might have suffered defeat and lost our freedom. I say to the power companies and to our elected officials: Stand up for coal and for all those who died producing the energy necessary to keep the lights on. I consider Mr. Obama’s attitude toward the coal industry an insult. If he and all those other stuffed shirts in D.C. had to stumble around in the dark without electricity for a week or so, he might just change his attitude and be more grateful. Where is the outrage from our local, state and federal officials. Please make your voices heard from the hills of Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Alabama and all other coal producing states. Yell loud enough to make Obama, the EPA and Congress sit up and take notice. Put a stiff tax on all these gas wells so that power plants won’t be so eager to switch from coal to gas. I would be more willing to pay higher fees for electricity if it meant we could keep our jobs and mines operating. Put scrubbers on the smokestacks if forced to do so. At least our miners, towns and states will continue to survive. If Obama doesn’t have a change of heart, then I feel that we will be forced to find other fuel sources to keep us warm, and that means a life in the past rather than enjoying our future. In closing, let me suggest that we all understand how our politicians feel about the war on coal. Ask them whose side are they on before we use our only weapon, our vote. Coal raised me and my family, and for that I am grateful. May God bless our coal and those who produce it.

(In reference to your comment on the need for money to research clean-burning coal, President Obama’s Energy Secretary, Ernest Moniz, said on June 26 that the administration plans to offer up to $8 billion in loan guarantees for ‘carbon capture’ technologies that can keep carbon dioxide produced by power plants from being released into the atmosphere.)

.

With Kentucky Power Company asking for another rate increase, I would like to know why we have so many power outages? Every time we have an electrical storm, snowstorm, windstorm or ice storm, the power company asks the Kentucky Public Service Commission for a rate increase to cover its expenses. This is not right. We don’t have the option to ask the power company to replace our vehicles when they wear out or ask them to make repairs on our homes when they need painting or new roofs, plumbing or other utilities. We own these properties and we know it’s our duty to keep them repaired. The way I see it, the power company is more interested in keeping the fat-cat shareholders happy and generating as much wealth as possible. They care less about the welfare of their paying customers. I think the Public Service Commission should be elected, not appointed. The people on this commission should be made up entirely from the paying customers and not from big business or politicians. The power company just got one of the largest rate increases in the nation just a few months ago and the effects are still being felt.

Hello, hi, and howdy, folks. Can we please give Paula Deen a break? The woman made a mistake. She apologized for it, so let’s move on. She didn’t cheat people out of millions of dollars, or go on a murder spree. She didn’t deny saying the ‘N’ word, she admitted to doing so 30 years ago. It’s ancient history. Let it go. There is no need to destroy this woman. To the network and sponsors who dropped her: You are cowards. Being a con, I recognize a good scam when I see it. In my opinion this isn’t about racism or sexual harassment, but the actions of an opportunist trying to score a big payday, that’s right, this is about money. Within the same week, rapper Lil Wayne was filmed making a video while stepping all over the American flag, a ploy to drum up sales for this latest recording, I guess. You didn’t hear or see much criticism about that. It lasted two days and it was gone. Where was the outrage? You haven’t heard of his record company or Mountain Dew dropping him, have you? Oh yeah, I almost forgot — Lil Wayne uses the ‘N’ word in his songs — a lot. He claims he didn’t realize that he was stepping on the flag but come on. In the video the flag, which was huge and already touching the ground, was being hand-held. It was dropped on cue (the American flag should never touch the ground). Once again I ask, where is the outrage? I guess that as an ‘artist’ he was just expressing his First Amendment right. It is ironic that he would do that while dancing on the flag. No, it’s more than ironic, it’s offensive. Just as offensive as hearing young, African American men use the ‘N’ word every third or fourth word in a sentence, as a noun, an adjective, and even as a term of affection. I’m sick of it, and as a black man I am ashamed of it. So you see, that’s why I’m not upset with Paula Deen. I guess I am what the youngsters would call ‘old school.’ If my mama would have ever heard me say that word she would have doubleslapped the taste right out of my mouth. I hope that Ms. Deen can recover from this illogical and hypocritical ordeal. You politically correct commandos need to shut up and sit down. Everybody makes mistakes; trust me, I know. Until next time, I’m on the inside looking out.

.

To the blonde in the silver car and the brunette in the red van: You need to worry about your men. They would hop anyone that looked at them twice. They’ve really made fools out of you all. Stop being cowards and confront me. Ha, ha, ha.

.

In God we trust. America was built on Christian principles. This was the true source of America’s greatness. Without question, today’s war against Christianity by our government, educational institutions, the media and our popular culture now pose a grave threat to America’s survival as a free nation. It is a war that surfaced in 1962 with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to prohibit the following 22-word nondenominational prayer in public schools: ‘Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon thee, and we beg thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers, and our country.’ The following year the court then banned Bible teachings in public schools. With these two decisions, American officially told God that He was no longer welcome in the public affairs of this nation. On Jan. 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in a ruling that has led to the tragic loss of over 50 million lives and counting. In 1980, the Supreme Court then ordered public schools to remove the Ten Commandments from student view. Sincerely, the Midnight Writer.

A virtuous woman is a crown to her family and husband. Proverbs 5:21. For your ways are before the eyes of the Lord. Proverbs 3:6. In all thy ways acknowledge God. He shall direct thy paths dressing, showing your body, and trying to get a mate with sex. If sinners entice thee, consent thou not. Turn away and forget your deeply revealed, ample bosom of feminine revealed flesh in low cut. Behavior — too forward in the public workplace — needs to be correct. Enthralled by your beauty, not your bosom. Delicate looks get open admiration, not flesh. Special notice goes to hair, teeth, and laughs, not to ample bosom. You are supposed to be graceful women. Please, no more flesh in the workplace. Someone may get you for sexual harassment. Men could do it. Fight back, men. The workplace and life need a wake up call. Please don’t go with the flow. Is God pleased with your action? Put some clothes on. No more sex in my face at the workplace. I am going to sue you.
