To the person who commented about making a merge as the lane ends: You wouldn’t happen to be one of those nimrods who see that the right-hand lane is ending but decide to pass anyway, would you? You know, one of those folks who know the car in the right hand lane must merge, yet you just simply have to pass at that moment so they can’t possibly get over and therefore must slap on their brakes since you’ve just caused them to run out of room? Guess what, Slappy? If you’re one of those people, you’re part of the problem.

A torrid love affair that has lasted about a year. A few months in, the conception of a baby. The big day approached fast. A courtroom-themed nursery was built, equipped with a bench and even a few toy guns. The cost is about $40,000. June 24, the day of delivery. The lovers were passing out cigars in Louisville. In the delivery room, all you can see was the head. A few good pushes and tragedy struck. The baby died on the table at the Letcher County Board of Education meeting. Ask what else can I lose? Home is where the heart is supposed to be.

I am the son of Angela Mays, who is currently charged with complicity to murder. I understand how much of a problem drugs have been to everyone in Letcher County. Drugs are ripping apart families and they turn even sane people around. I have experienced firsthand what they can do to people. My mother was the most loving, kindhearted, and caring person I know and for her to do what she is accused of doing really shows the effect that drugs have on people. The illegal use of prescription drugs is making our community an unsafe environment for both the children and adults. I think our entire community needs a shift in their thought process. We cannot repeatedly do the same things and expect a different outcome. I think that most of the problem is just the fact that these people have been around drugs so long they don’t know anything else. In the words of Daniel Berrigan, ‘in hell they say that heaven is a great lie.’ I’m tired of seeing innocent children getting hurt by their parents’ stupidity. Generation after generation, parents pass their habits down to their children. It makes me sick that a community could be so self-destructive in its ways. I feel that our drug prevention programs such as D.A.R.E. are not working the way they are intended to work Why would our youth follow what a cop says over what they see their parents doing? I feel that some major changes should be made here in Letcher County before everyone is in one of the two places what we are doing leads to —prison or death.

To an old lady in Graveyard Hollow: We hope you enjoy your retirement.

Every time the people of McRoberts register their vehicles and pay utilities their cost is much higher than the cost of the same vehicles and utilities of those who live in the Letcher County School System. Now the community of McRoberts will not have a school and those students would be transported to Burdine each school day. There are very few students attending Jenkins High School from McRoberts. I would like to know if the majority of McRoberts residents would prefer to withdraw from the Jenkins School System and join the Letcher County School System. I intend to check the legalities of withdrawing from the Jenkins system, and if residents feel this is what the community prefers a meeting will be scheduled to discuss future action. Petitions will soon be posted and circulated. To continue to pay these extremely high taxes for the students to travel to Burdine instead of Martha Jane Potter is ridiculous. We are financing schools for the City of Jenkins, and without the McRoberts tax money they will really have problems.

.

In response to the lady talking about her neighbor drawing disability and working on her property: You are right, you should report this. If she is physically able to work, she doesn’t need to draw disability. You report Social Security Disability fraud to the Social Security Administration Fraud Hotline. The toll-free number is 800-269-0271. You can remain anonymous.

A good friend of mine lives in the Neon area and is in this situation as I speak: He is so scared he can’t go anywhere and speak unless he asks first. She will seduce him, manipulate him, and threaten him — all because of a deep-seated sense of emptiness and craving for control. Her biggest issue is abandonment. She is terrified to be alone, and eventually the object of her desire begins to feel that instead of being in relationship with her he has become her emotional hostage. Such a woman doesn’t engage in a relationship; she takes a prisoner. As things unravel she can be treacherous. She may stalk him, scream at him, slash his tires, threaten suicide, write letters to his wife, or worse. It has been said that ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.’ The reality of this can become all too apparent to a man under certain conditions. Typically, she brings out the worst in a man, not the best.

.

I think Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb needs to check into some of the things being done by certain workers who are paid by the county.

.

When the Upper Big Branch mine explosion happened, the federal inspectors used it to try to bring down every mine and miner. It started with 80 percent at rock dusting everywhere in the mine because they knew that companies would not be able to maintain that and ultimately would have to shut down. They also train inspectors to write violations to make it look like miners are not doing their jobs. Inspectors are trained not to help mines or miners, only to do what the higher-ups tell them to do — and that will only help in making mining a thing of the past. I think what the inspectors have done to the mining industry is a shame. Some of the worst inspectors seem to be coming out of Virginia. I just wonder what they will do for work when they eventually put all coalmines out of business. Maybe they should help in fighting the war against coal instead of fighting for it.

Ask a certain preacher the last time he spoke to his daughter. Ask him and his wife why their daughter won’t have anything to do with them? Ask them why they chose a liar who they know lies, because she lied on them too, over their own daughter. Ask them how they can lie down at night after doing what they have done. I have always been dirt on your shoes until you needed something from me, usually money. Then you were my best friend. I don’t understand how a parent can treat a child like you have done me my entire life. I would die before I chose one child over another. I have done nothing but be good to everyone and try to help every one of you out. I have bent over backwards for you, and this is the thanks I get. But you got what you wanted. You ripped my heart out and stomped it into dust. You have told me several times you wished he had never moved into my house, but you don’t want him in yours. Matter of fact, you kicked them out twice but you’ve got him close to you now. I hope you all have a very unhappy life together. I’m sick of it. Don’t call me anymore. I do not want to ever hear your voices again. You are dead and buried to me. If you keep calling me I will file harassment charges. If you step onto any of my properties you will be trespassing and I will file charges. Forget my name, forget me. I don’t exist to you.

.

The sky didn’t fall when interracial marriage became legal no matter what the haters predicted. And it won’t fall if gays get married. So, can we stop calling it ‘gay marriage’ and just call it what it is: ‘marriage’?

.

To cat killer and dog killer: So what are you going to do next? Make December kill your neighbor’s parakeet month? Why don’t you do something productive and eliminate coyotes?

.

To The Mountain Eagle: I hope you include this in Speak Your Piece since you seem to include everything else. I have enjoyed reading your paper for years, but not anymore. You have stooped lower than a snake’s belly. I have lost all respect for your paper. There are tons of people just like myself — people that love their animals just as they love their children, and you have insulted the integrity and hearts of us all. For you to continuously glorify the killing of innocent cats by repeatedly printing comments from an obviously uneducated, stupid and most likely inbred person that calls himself ‘Cat Killer’ is incomprehensible to me. Printing garbage like this encourages this feebleminded inbred even more and puts the lives of these innocent animals at risk. Can’t you see that? Or, are you also animal haters and don’t care if these animals are made to suffer more abuse and die? Or are you going to respond ‘freedom of the press’? Okay, so if child molesters start sending details of molestations and murders, will you also print that as well? Why not? It would be freedom of the press. I doubt seriously that you will print this, not in its entirety anyway. That’s okay. I’m sending the exact e-mail to four other papers showing I e-mailed this to you. Also, I’m sending this to the Humane Society and PETA. Also to these two agencies I’m mailing copies of the last several weeks of Speak Your Piece. I think you owe your readers a big apology, and I would strongly suggest you stop encouraging animal abuse and murders. Janet Nethers, Wise, Virginia.

(Are you sure you’re not overreacting just a bit? By the way, our staff members own cats and dogs. They have fed a stray cat or two in downtown Whitesburg.)

.

‘Lisa and myself left Whitesburg …’ What is wrong with ‘Lisa and I…’? Some editing, please.

.

The person who called in to trash the ACLU and recommend putting prayers of one religion in schools to discriminate against all the others should get some refresher education on the documents our great country was founded upon, especially the Bill of Rights. The ACLU exists solely to protect the Bill if Rights; if you don’t like the ACLU you don’t like the Bill of Rights which, particularly at the time it was written, made us the best country in the world.

.

Citizens of Fleming-Neon, take a look around us and see what is going on. Jenkins is moving ahead, Whitesburg is moving ahead, and Fleming-Neon is falling behind. We have an administration that would rather complain about the problems rather than work for a solution. Watch a city meeting. There is not one council member who will speak up with an idea to start the movement in a forward direction. Why is there no new business in the city? We have no leadership, no infrastructure, no lifeblood flowing. We have a water and sewer department ran by a young man that will tell you he is no expert about his job. He is at least honest, maybe the only honest one in the bunch. Check to see how many family members are on the payroll. Look at the expense that is being paid for gas and upkeep on police department vehicles that spend more time running personal errands all over the county and in other counties and states while our city is not patrolled. Look at the conditions at Neon Junction being used for a junkyard. It is a very bad eye sore but no one in the administration has the nerve to address the situation there as well as the junkyard on the road going toward Hemphill. If this were you or I, we would be made by the city or county to clean up and remove this from public view by whatever means possible. Watch the water company trucks go up and down the road mostly all in line following the leader nowhere. Look for the evening shift police officer and you will find 90 percent of his time is spent sitting at Neon Junction BP. Dayshift patrol consist of city hall, fire station and the City of Jenkins. Would you open a business in a city like this? No, and neither will anyone else. Maybe this place would have a future in the environmental sector. Take down the rest of the structures and build a garbage incinerator and landfill to put the residue left from the incinerator. Pay the current city administrators to never have anything to do with it. Hey, maybe the city leaders went to school with Obama. They seem to have the same abilities.

.

Sixty-two thousand Kentucky children don’t have health insurance. Senators McConnell and Paul are fighting to stop Obamacare to make sure they don’t get it. If you don’t want all our kids to have health insurance, vote Republican.

.

Don’t people have any respect anymore for church? I saw a big, fat, redheaded woman in church the other day in a pair of jogging pants with stripes down the side and a big, sloppy shirt. Is this what society has come to?

.

I went to a ragsale in the Neon area to buy some rags to wash my car with, not to wear. I don’t want to be reminded of things that happened years ago. Get it off of your mind. I know who you are. Don’t embarrass me again. Watch your mouth, girl.

.

I am calling about the cat killer. I am going to join him and kill every cat I see.

.

I would like to take a special moment to thank The Mountain Eagle for having Speak Your Piece. You don’t always put everything in there I say, but sometimes I call so many times I know you can’t. I appreciate you. You all have a nice week.

.

I am almost 70 years old. Ten years ago I got into a little bit of trouble, which was not proven on me because I was not guilty and that is the reason they could not prove it on me. But yet they took my concealed weapon license. They are 10 years late in taking it and they are out here chasing a 70-yearold man.

.

This is to Letcher Manor Nursing Home: Instead of buying a baby grand piano you should have spent the money on the patients. They need new mattresses and new beds. My mother is lying in a bed that is sinking in the middle, and it has been that way for a while now. Can we please get a mattress for her?

.

This is to Letcher County Judge/Executive Jim Ward: We didn’t put you in office for that to become your private playground. You are making more money now than you ever did in your entire life, so do your job.

.

To the citizens of Jenkins, all of Letcher County, Pike County, Wise County and surrounding counties: Please sign the petition for the reopening of Jenkins Community Hospital. Petitions are available at Jenkins City Hall, Boggs’ Pharmacy or Dr. Heath Cook’s office in Jenkins. We thank you very much. Please write a testimonial telling how Jenkins Community Hospital saved your life or helped you in one way or another.

If you know who stole the person’s weed trimmer and air compressor on Bill Moore Branch, return that to me and give me the name of the person who took the weed trimmer and air compressor and there is a $200 reward. It was a Stihl weed trimmer and what they call a pancake air compressor.

.

They said it couldn’t be done, but I did it. This is the Midnight Phantom speaking clearly, slowly and to the point. Have a nice week and be good to yourself.

.

This is concerning the woman on Cowan who reported a supposed TNT explosion on Cowan. Well for one, you need to keep your nose in your own business because that wasn’t TNT. It was Tannerite, a very legal exploding target. It’s very popular among a lot of people. For one, I am on my own property far away from you. There are other neighbors much closer to the site I am using this and they are not complaining at all. This bothers no one. Just because you are a miserable soul does not mean you have to call the cops on people for absolutely no reason. We were just enjoying our Second Amendment right and having a little fun. Furthermore, I would really like it if you would keep your nose out of my business and stop harassing me because you are so miserable.

.

I just want to say that the people who were at an auction in front of the Letcher County Courthouse were there because they are just nosey people. It is none of their business that the family sold its property. From what I saw they did great. These people need to clean up their own trash before they throw anymore stones.

.

Last week for the first time in years I didn’t read Speak Your Piece. I finally read it and what did I find? That guy commented about his angel again. I don’t understand it. It has been a year. Why do you put that in every week? Why can’t people put in things that are of interest? ‘I am not a cat’ is not interesting to anybody. And the Midnight Phantom has to be on crack cocaine. Put interesting things in there instead of all of that junk.

(Feel free to phone in or e-mail a comment you think others will find more interesting.)

.

Is that old in-your-face attitude creeping back into the Letcher County Board of Education’s actions? They don’t hesitate to ask for money to send students here and there, but then they turn around and throw money to the wind on a court action that win or lose will mean nothing. Or do they just get pleasure in thumbing their nose at the public?

.

You have to love some of the hate-filled members of the right in this country. Those who hated the Florida justice system when accused child killer Casey Anthony was found not guilty by a jury now love it that accused child killer George Zimmerman was let off by a jury. I personally thing Miss Anthony and Mr. Zimmerman should both rot in hell.

.

Who is that google-eyed girl who sits in church looking over her shoulder thinking maybe the devil is there to get her? Could that be because of that 19-year-old you are sleeping with or that policeman? Maybe you feel guilty sitting beside your husband.

.

I just want to give all of the men in the City of Jenkins a warning. If they have business at City Hall, be sure they go instead of their wives. Don’t let their wives get any closer than 500 feet to City Hall, because you have four persons that are over there that are in pretty bad shape. Watch your wives.

.

To the girl who lives on Robinson’s Branch: The way you talk to your husband is a shame. You will reap what you sow. I pray God won’t put you through the chaos you have put your husband through.

.

I wish Kevin Day would change the WXKQ radio station to country. There are a lot of great country songs now and country is changing its pace. I wish the radio station I love to listen to would go back to country. And you do a great job, Kevin, and we all love to listen to you. We love The Swap Shop.

.

Mr. Zimmerman was found not guilty and they should leave it at that, but everybody wants to stick their nose in it and bring up stuff that happened 50 or 60 years ago. He never harmed nobody. Somebody jumped on him and had his head busted against the concrete and he shoots the man. I don’t care if you are nine to 90, blind, crippled or tiny, if you bust my head I will shoot you, too. This is America. We need to concentrate on what is going on in the world.

.

You are still my angel and I love you very much.

.

To the blonde in the silver car that keeps commenting to her ex’s wife: With what you allowed under your own roof, you should be ashamed to utter a word to anybody about anything. I’m talking about when you were married.
