We have a dog problem in Pratt Branch. People moved out of the first trailer on the left and left four or five girl dogs down there. You can’t come in Pratt Branch without seeing seven or eight dogs or pups. They are starving to death. I’d like to know if we have a dog warden in Letcher County. What is his telephone number? He sure won’t come to Pratt Branch.

.

This is to the old man who drives a pickup truck: Everybody knows that you drink every day, all day long from the time you get up until the time you go to bed and make trips to the American Legion going up and down the mountain all day drinking and driving. The next time you pull up beside me on the road and flip me off you are going to jail for DUI, because I’m calling the state police on you. Do you hear me? Flip me off one more time on the highway, you are going to jail for a DUI. I know you will test positive for alcohol. I had my great-grandbabies in the car with me. You’re an idiot.

.

I hope when you all plug in my Christmas lights at the American Legion that you blow every fuse in that building. You all know that is my stuff in that office locked up. I bought that. That is my personal stuff.

.

Does it ever bother you to see those jars on the counters of stores and restaurants asking for money for some kid who is sick or injured? Or low income people having to attend Remote Area Medical events? Well, these represent the Republican plan for health care. Hopefully they will all be history once we get Obamacare implemented, and I thank my lucky stars for that.

.

This is for the Whitesburg City Council: You are so rude. You thought everybody should get out and support Mountain Heritage Festival this year. They didn’t get one of my dollars this year. They can take it out of my taxes. So take that and smoke that it your pipe.

(How did boycotting a festival run by volunteers and filled mostly with food booths operated by organizations raising funds hurt the city council?)

.

Dear Sick and Tired: While I think stealing a grave marker is a sorry thing to do, one rarely gets 10 years in this county for most murders. Slone was kind of like monkey see, monkey do. There were at least six more grave markers stolen by the person who told Slone how to do it and when. Slone’s stupidity and drug use has nothing to do with how he was raised. I doubt a mother or grandmother can control a grown man and what he does. Why don’t you keep your nose out of someone else’s business, quit reading about it if you don’t like it, respect your elders and sign your sick and tired name to your stupid and ignorant smart mouth. I bet your IQ is at least 80 and you can spell it. So act like the self-righteous, selfordained preacher in all this who also runs his mouth, even though it mentions gossiping in his Bible and he probably doesn’t know it. My name is Jack Gibson. I fear no one in this county or any other and do not care to sign this. I have cured the sick and tired before. They are no longer sick or tired. Would you like to be cured of your misery and not have to read any more? Let me know.

.

To those old city council members and the mayor in Whitesburg: If everything isn’t going your way you are the most hateful people you ever spoke to.

.

To all you animal lovers out there: I hear you whining and complaining about your animals going missing from your yard. Everybody knows between Doty Creek, Carbon Glow and Adams Branch there is a big pack of coyotes on top of that strip job. The only reason why the game wardens won’t do anything about it is because they are afraid. They might not be any help in catching them, but somebody needs to start setting out some steel traps. Someone needs to start catching some of these coyotes and bobcats before there are no more kitty cats to love and pet on. My advice is to find a big fat road-kill deer and take it to Jent Mountain and lay it out. Season that sucker down with some kind of poison. Lay it out for those coyotes and they’ll get into it and then they won’t be coming around your houses at night for a free meal. But, no, some people just want to let the little four-legged creatures run around and destroy everything.

.

I think the Mountain Motor Speedway is a poor excuse for a racetrack.

.

I want to word this the best I can and be real careful so that the newspaper won’t have any liability in what is said and see if it still gets printed. I’d like to ask the mayor and city council of Whitesburg how anyone could get paid from any city and be on city payroll and be in school 200 miles away and not be at the city at all. Now, that is one way that any city — and I said any city — can save money by not doing that. Now how can they pay someone else to come into any city hall — again I said any city hall — and sit down all day long and gossip with friends, have no job at all, have nothing to do and get paid for it? And the title they give them, someone else is really doing the job. They are just getting free money. That’s just a couple of cutbacks they could do. And if you want to know who is on your side or who is trying to do the right thing, it is real easy in Whitesburg. Just call Speak Your Piece and see how it is written, if is written, and the response and then you’ll know. It’s not hard at all. Read the little comments at the end of it. Myself, I just like to do what is right for the people. There is nothing in it for me. I’m just trying to help other people. My main thing is I hate anything that people do when it is wrong. I like to see things go the way they should go. I’m for the underdog. And I like to see things go the right way, not the bad or wrong way. It really upsets me when I see this stuff. So I was really careful how I worded this. Let’s see if it gets put in Speak Your Piece. Thank you very much.

.

I’m not a highly educated man and I’m not a well man. I do know right from wrong. My morals I got from my Christian father, and if I can stand up what I know is right then I think some of you people who are well educated and healthy can also stand up. Right and wrong is just common sense for most things. It looks like a man who isn’t well and is less educated than you stands up for your rights because a lot of you won’t do it. I’m proud of the ones who have. There’s a lot that could do it. There are enough churches in Whitesburg who could have put a stop to some of the things that are going down there. They didn’t do it. I think the next election we need to clean it all out, except the Shortt lady, and start all over. Next time look for morals and character and not a pat on the back and a promise. I pray that this will get put in Speak Your Piece. This is the kind of thing that people need to hear. I hope that somebody will wake up.

.

Why did the Whitesburg mayor and some of the city council members jet out the back door as soon as they voted for the payroll tax and quickly adjourned the meeting? I think they owe the public an explanation.

.

Well, my cat got run over today. Broke its leg. Took it to the vet. It’s going to cost about $800 to get that cat lined out just right and I love my cat. As I sat and thought about having to spend $800 to fix that cat, I thought about all the little children at St. Jude’s. So I had them put the cat under for $50 and sent the other $750 to St. Jude’s. Think about it, people.

.

As a former resident of Whitesburg, I can only laugh at the people there who are so outraged at being asked to pay a payroll tax. Welcome to the real world, people. Nearly every city that isn’t a Neon-type place has a payroll tax in Kentucky. Many counties have payroll taxes, too. What are you people going to do when Letcher County’s government has to take the same dreaded step of tax your paycheck. I love my hometown and my home county, but you people have got to realize the free ride is over. It is 2013 and the rest of the state is sick and tired of paying the bills for all the local government and school systems in eastern Kentucky that don’t do anything to help themselves. Get used to it. Either pay there or move somewhere else where the taxes are even higher. You have a choice.

.

In the City of Whitesburg, we the people have no voice. We the people were gagged and bound during the ‘open meeting’ held by the Whitesburg City Council. It was so well scripted and planned. The meeting opened with prayer, pledge, second reading of the proposal — which needed a well qualified lawyer to interpret — and then adjournment without the people having an opportunity to speak during the second reading. We the people watched as our civil liberties were stripped right before our eyes. We the people felt another nail in America’s coffin, as democracy was replaced with socialism. We the people wept not for ourselves but for America and the burden placed upon the working class due to dare we say it, mismanagement. We the people were incensed by the callous and arrogant nature of the elite eight. We the people were grateful to see one brave lady vote no. Be advised council. The sleeping giant has been awakened and both eyes will be upon you as well as the ACLU. We the people are not without power and there appears to have been an infringement upon due process and our rights as Americans. We shall see as we the people will stay vigilant in calling for an audit of all records to determine how we the people can best help the city. Several family members live within the city and are waiting to revisit the ballot box.

.

Of course McConnell, Paul, Barr, and other treasonous Republicans don’t care if they shut down the country for the rest of us. They still get their $100,000- plus salaries.

.

How does it feel now, Jenkins Council Member Rebecca Terrell Amburgey, after you helped vote the hardworking people of Jenkins a 1.5 percent payroll tax in a little over a year ago? Now you have to pay it to the City of Whitesburg. What goes around, comes around.

.

To the person who put in Speak Your Piece about busting windows out of people’s vehicles sitting beside the road while they were ginsenging: Is it not illegal to bust windows out of a vehicle sitting beside a county road or a state road? Not only that, ginsengers pack pistols, too. Keep that in mind.

.

I was calling in response to a person who said they had problems with lawyers who will drag cases on and on. I for a fact know that they will do that. The person asked for help. They can call the Attorney General and the Kentucky Bar Association. There is a limited time that things need to get settled. I think they will specify the time frame for them. Turn those attorneys into the Kentucky Bar Association. Good advice is never pay a lawyer all of your money up front. I’d put it in an escrow account. As my case went a long a little bit at a time is all they would get paid.

.

To a certain man in Mayking: I will do your dishes anytime.

.

Hmm. If the Republicans really thought Obamacare would be a disaster, they’d let it run. Were they capable of telling the truth, they’d admit that they know what a success it will be and they can’t stand a black man getting credit for it.

.

There is no respect for the law in Letcher County, and without respect there can be no law.

.

If the Whitesburg City Council members donate their salary to charity, what charity do they donate it to?

(Council members donate their salaries to the Letcher County Kids Day Committee.)

.

Can you all tell me the purpose of the bridge to nowhere behind the parking lot in downtown Whitesburg across the river? What in the world were they thinking about when they put that up? Didn’t they think that would cost money? They better look at what they are doing.

.

A decent ginseng digger doesn’t steal ginseng. If you have it on your property, you are supposed to have it posted. If you don’t, that’s your fault. If you ever bust my windshield, honey, you will lose a lot more than a windshield.

.

Shame on you, Forgiven Ministries, the church located across the street from KYVA Medical Center. The church members charged $5 for each parking space for people attending the Mountain

Heritage Festival. The parking spaces don’t even belong to them and may even be city property. Most churches are givers, but not this one. They are takers to a shameful degree.

(The parking lot belongs to people who attend the church.)

.

Mayor Craft and the Whitesburg City Council Members talked the talk, but failed to walk the walk. Every revenue-producing ordinance within the last five years was supposed to have been the save-all for city finances. Read my lips. No more new taxes. The 1.5 payroll tax is the last straw. One question immediately comes to mind. What about an employee who is on the payroll of a business located in the City of Whitesburg, but who never works within the city limits? So much for the compassionate service of an inept political body.

(People who don’t work inside the city’s limits are exempt from the payroll tax even though their employers are located in the city.)

.

To the person who is tired of hearing about Harley Jack Slone and Mitchell Wright: I don’t care who doesn’t like hearing it. That is what Speak Your Piece is about. And the last time I checked this is freedom of speech. If you don’t like it, this is Harley’s mother and you know where I live. Oh yeah, Harley got a raw deal. Mitchell is still walking free. Hopefully he will go to jail soon.

.

A review of income and expenses in the City of Whitesburg would probably beg for an audit by the Kentucky state auditor, but that is probably not likely because our mayor still has friend in high places. He has maneuvered treacherous political waters most of his career. So let’s just go ahead and pay up, residents of Whitesburg and workers in Whitesburg, and let the mayor keep building bridges and naming them after cronies. That’s the way it is in our part of the world.

.

It is my opinion that county attorneys are supposed to prosecute all crimes of misdemeanor and violations of traffic laws, rules and regulations that occur within their counties, and all commonwealth’s attorneys are supposed to prosecute all felonies that occur in their districts. Sometimes a commonwealth’s attorney may require the help of a county attorney in special situations. Although both the county attorney and the commonwealth’s attorney are elected by the local constituents of their respective areas or political boundaries they are obligated to conduct state government business first and the need of the local people they represent last, as it relates to priority. They are state employees and not county employees. Therefore, they are not obligated to prosecute any charges of violation of county or local laws. Since the function of state government trumps the needs of the ordinary citizen, the people in the rural areas of the state are left pretty much defenseless against highway and rural road traffic violators. That’s where the real crimes take place; where there is no police patrolling the roads. There are not any tickets being given out by the police anymore, because the county attorney’s office will not prosecute them. If there is no prosecution of the violators, then what is the point of patrolling the roads? Therefore, naturally, corruption will take over possession of the roads and secondary highways. Counties are losing a lot of money in not collecting fines, too, because of lazy county attorneys. Anonymous.

(Can we be sure traffic tickets are not being written in rural areas because officials at one level or the other are lazy or is it that tickets are being issued less regularly these days because local and state police departments are understaffed and have to devote all available resources to answering 9-1-1 calls and investigating more serious crimes than minor traffic offenses? We’ve noticed in gathering information for ‘Police Beat’ that the Letcher County Sheriff ’s office assigns extra patrol to specific areas when asked to do so. Perhaps you might ask for such help if you have a certain place in mind.)

.

I agree with the person who was wronged by the Perry County system. Some get in office there and buy their votes for 20 years and seem to uphold the drug dealers. Everyone there knows that. They all work together for their own benefit, not the people.

.

What qualifies someone to be a social worker? I was at the Mountain Heritage Baby Pageant and saw the social worker that was assigned to my brother’s case. I didn’t know anything about her until the other night, and now that I do I am so upset that I didn’t know this when she was trying to take my brother’s kids from him, or we could have fought back. I am making sure that the people in charge of her know how her own family members behave, and maybe they will question if she is fit to be a social worker when her family isn’t any better than others. You shouldn’t judge other people and tell them what is right and wrong when your family isn’t any better. Your family should live the way you expect other people to if you are going to pretend to be a social worker that does the right thing. Shouldn’t your family be a role model if that is your job? Just my opinion.

(Other than parents of children, can we really hold people responsible for how other members of their family may or may not behave?)

.

Raven Rock Golf Course is not a children’s playground. Would you please take them to a public park?

.

To a certain person: Perhaps you need to go back to school because you have miscounted. The amount was not $620. It was $800. It proved that you are a selfish, coldhearted person. You say that you are kindhearted. Yeah, right.

.

Republicans knew when they voted that Harry Reed would put that Obamacare back on the bill. Only 19 Republicans stood firm. Now, look at what you got. Mr. President, you said you cut the deficit. If I understand this right, you’re the one who ran it sky high. I think the taxpayers are the ones who brought it down. I don’t see you doing anything to put money back into lowering the bills of the United States. We shouldn’t owe anybody anything. Well, you destroyed America. You should start concentrating on getting the immigrants who are coming through Mexico lined out. Stop them cold until we know who the hell they are.

.

Concerning the comment about the coal miners losing their jobs, that is a joke. Seriously, don’t even go there. I work for minimum wage. My son works for the coalmines. He has a good job. Are you on welfare or something? Are you a joke?

.

If the post office doesn’t do something really quick, the lower end of their building toward the river is going to be covered with that vine. They need to get a few goats and put in there. That would take care of anything.

.

I was thinking the other day about what happens when you take one event from the 6th grade and never live it down. That is crazy. People down there never could let me do what I needed to do, but when they slept I took full advantage of what happened. So I went to college when they turned their backs around and, like I said, that showed me the way. When I lived up here they were calling me crazy and saying you need to live down here around your dad, that this one has their degree and we need him in Letcher. Then I said okay. I ended up in Letcher and lived there for 10 years and no one ever said a word to me or even wanted anything to do with me. I swear that no one ever said hi, how are you for 10 or 11 years. Then I said I was going to college and they blew it off. But hey, I finished and you thought it was end of the world. It was too late and I moved and I have not heard a word out of them. You thought it was end of the world, but once they got used to it I guess I am forgotten about. Why in the world they wanted me there I have no idea. I figure I would have ended back up here. To those certain people: I hope you drop dead and do the world a favor. Sorry to my family down there. Stay out of my life.
