I’d like for everyone to really consider Renee Campbell in the Letcher County coroner’s race. She is a wonderful person and she will handle things honest and in a professional way.

Teachers are spending more time on their phones and on Facebook than they are teaching their students.

.

To a certain person: I’m still thinking about sending a copy of your hateful letter to your children. You better hope I don’t.

.

To all the people who have judged me for having hepatitis C: Guess what. I am healed. For those who have judged me and think you are so much better than me, you are not. I pray when you stand in front of God on Judgment Day, I know that He forgave you because I forgave you, too. But you always reap what you sow. I am healed, but you aren’t my friends.

I have asked TVS/Thacker & Grigsby Telephone twice why ‘ Magic Jack’ does not work on calls from Letcher County to Knott County. Both times they said it was the fault of the Magic Jack provider. I had the Magic Jack provider on its website customer service forum discussion while talking to a woman at TVS in Hindman. The TVS woman said it was Magic Jack that had changed, and Magic Jack said it was TVS. One of the two was lying and my Magic Jack bill was already paid for two years. Why would Magic Jack lie since it has nothing to gain? TVS was losing two cents a minute by letting Magic Jack continue in their county. It had worked well the prior two years. I did find a county in Michigan where Magic Jack has also been cut out. I can call anywhere else in the U.S., except Knott County and the Michigan county which admitted to kicking out Magic Jack calls. So who would you think is lying about two cents? Signed, Magic Jack.

When they passed the Rover law, they let Rover take over. We, the people, need to reverse the decision before letting the Rovers lose in the hills chasing wildlife to death. I have watched dogs run in packs chasing deer out of the hills past my house and across the highway. That puts people in danger, not only from cars hitting deer and dogs but also rabies. Dogs in the wild will attack and can do more damage to people or wild animals than the wild animals themselves. We need to stop this law. Wildlife needs left in the wild. Domestic animals need to be kept domestic — on leashes or behind a fence. Whoever passed this law must not be too intelligent. Call someone who will make a difference and make a change in this law.

.

There is no word to describe how lowlife the commercial is that Mitch Mc- Connell has out now. It just sounds phony to everybody who has heard it. Nobody wants to hear it. Surely, he could have done something better than that. That is playing on people’s feelings for cancer victims. Mitch, that isn’t right. You can do better than that.

.

As I was driving through the community of Isom I saw the county road department fixing a lady’s private yard that fell through. I want to know how that is legal when the Knott County judge/ executive went to prison for the same thing. I didn’t think they were allowed to fix people’s private yards.

.

We were just wondering if the Hemphill hooker still has Facebook. We can’t seem to reach her.

.

I found it hard to believe that the Letcher County Attorney would allow that meeting about the lease of the property at Isom to continue. The fiscal court is supposed to be a deliberate, legislative body that considers and debates issues, not a group which helps promote what has all the earmarks of a scam, and tries, with the scheme’s promoters, to rush it to a conclusion — probably to the detriment of the county. I think the court’s action was illegal, constitutes malfeasance and other violations and should be reported to the U.S. attorney. That a government body would bless the hiding of the names of the promoters and information about the company — even the company’s name — is incredible. The people deserve better than this.

.

I see from he latest Kentucky poll that the only segment of the population who want to keep minimum wage workers under their boot heels is conservatives. I’m shocked, just shocked.

I would like to speak my piece about a certain grocery store. My family has lived in Dorton for years. We always get The Mountain Eagle and we always shop at that store. There is a certain cashier there in the evenings who needs an attitude adjustment very bad. She won’t even help us find anything. I just want the management to know this. We may start shopping at another store because of her.

.

This is to the person who said that by your choice I would not marry this man: You know what, it was not your choice because he has always been mine. He only had you for one reason and one reason only so get over it, witch. He doesn’t want you anymore. He’s got what he wants.

.

I’m telling you people at Speak Your Piece for the last time that I have no criminal record. I’m telling you that you better print this because I have a lawyer and I will bring suit for slander because I have no criminal record whatsoever. If these people get out and spread these rumors, I know who they are and I will take them to court. I have been talking to a lawyer.

Everywhere in the county there is dissatisfaction and frustration with the state of the county. Unemployment is probably the highest ever, people are angry because their children are going to have to leave to get a job, crime is rampant, the justice system is uneven and unjust and slanted to benefi t only those with political connections, and the most generous thing that can be said about most of our fiscal court and other so-called leaders and officials is that they are incompetent. I can see some hope, though, in the number of candidates that will be running in May and November. Sheer numbers would indicate that there must be a few good possibilities for leadership, and they could hardly be worse than what we have. I think our current officials are arrogant and over-confident, and that there are going to be a lot of surprises come the elections.

( Believe it or not, but unemployment in Letcher County is nowhere near historical highs. In the 1980’s, 2,000 fewer Letcher Countians had jobs and the county’s jobless rate — often well over 20 percent — frequently topped those in the state’s 119 other counties.)

.

Wayne Fleming has nailed down the electric power rate situation, and it isn’t pretty. Now what are the Letcher Fiscal Court, legislators and other political leaders going to do about it? We’re waiting and watching.

.

Hello, Ms. President of the club. I’m just tickled to death to know they hired that lady up there that you hate so bad and that you’ve talked about like a dog. Now, you’ve got to work with her and look at her every day. You might be president of the club, but this makes me so happy that I could just jump up and down. Look at her every day and remember how you talked about her and put her down. Guess what? She is there to pay you back. You have a nice day.

Why is there no TV guide in the newspaper anymore?

(We’re conducting a test to see if readers still use the guide, which costs a considerable sum of money to produce each week. Some readers ask us why we bother publishing the TV listings since cable companies already carry them on a dedicated channel. Do all the cable companies carry such a channel?)

.

It appears that not much has changed with cheerleading. Some of them don’t even show up for practice and they still get to cheer. Some actually sit in the stands while others are cheering. The cheerleading coach needs to make her presence known a little more instead of sending girls out to boss other girls and tell them what to do, especially some who have never cheered before this year.

.

As a reader, I am a little disappointed that you continue to print comments from the cat killer. That’s obviously a sick, disturbed individual who doesn’t have any regard to life at all. I would personally like to know who he is.

.

I would like to wish Isaiah, Alexander and Jeffrey a happy Valentine’s Day. We love and miss you guys so much. We hope to see you soon. Love and prayers, Watermelon and Deep Dry.

.

I enjoy reading Speak Your Piece. It’s very informational. It’s a real turnoff when somebody has to put a month-long paragraph about religion, which is super boring. It does not get read. It is always passed over. You are wasting your breath and wasting your time.

.

It is a shame that when we travel out somewhere to conduct business that you have rattles in your vehicle from the horrendous road situation between Neon and Jenkins. What a shame. Can you not just repave the whole road? It just keeps getting worse.

.

I’m calling about the break in the pavement on the road just before you get to Highway 7 at Spring Branch. There has already been one wreck. It’s getting bad, especially when it freezes and ice gets in it. Fix the road, Mr. Ward.

.

To a certain person: You said that anything I can do, you can do. Well, it’s no competition here. If I block you again you won’t be able to do anything.

.

Happy Valentine’s Day to my angel. I love you.

.

Hey, folks. We’re firmly into February. It’s time to get the Christmas decorations down. Come on now.

Is there anything to the rumor that Sapphire Coal Company has been sold and may be going back to work?

( Metinvest, the multinational corporation that owns United Coal’s Sapphire division has made no mention of the company since announcing the suspension of operations here in its December 2012 quarterly report.)

.

I miss the TV guide. Bring it back.

(Dear readers: If you have an opinion on whether we should continue to carry the television listings, please call 633-7508 and let us know how you feel.)

I read the article about the special tax district the Jenkins City Council is considering. I think it’s definitely a step in the right direction, but a tax district at the industrial park will only cover the park. The problem in Jenkins is that the high taxes laid on by the school bard are keeping businesses out of the entire city and will eventually drive out the businesses we have, not just from the industrial park, but from all over town. I sympathize with the school board because it isn’t getting enough funding from the state, but enough is enough. Every child in the Jenkins school system suffers from not being in the Letcher County Schools. I’m sure the Jenkins teachers and administrators are competent and care about our students, but our kids aren’t getting the opportunity to have modern labs or to participate in sports we don’t have. I attended Jenkins High School and I thought it was a great place, but that’s not the case any more. It is time for the people of Jenkins to do something to get Jenkins schools consolidated with the county system. I don’t know exactly how to start. Maybe a referendum, or maybe people who are committed to taking the school into the county need to run for school board seats. However it needs to be done, we need to do it. I’d like to hear from others in Jenkins in Speak Your Piece concerning this issue. Maybe we could start a Facebook group too. Let’s hear some ideas folks. Jenkins needs new business, and with these tax rates it won’t be happening.

.

What is the point of all these special morning meetings of the fiscal court? Is this an attempt to keep whatever they’re up to secret, or to not be hindered by possible citizen participation? True, the meetings can be seen on TV, but that’s as useless as closing the barn door after the horse is stolen. After they have voted, we can complain, but do little else. This group needs all the oversight it can get. Some of them may, and probably will, disagree, but I think they need a sixthgrade civics lesson. They apparently didn’t catch on the first time around. A little attention to ethics wouldn’t hurt either. Actually, I don’t think there is much hope for this bunch to change, and that we should all be focused on May and November elections.

.

You are my only angel and you are very special to me. And I love you.

Revelations 4: 9- 11. Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives forever and ever, the 24 elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: ‘You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.’
