From what I keep hearing, we are going to have two new barbershops in Whitesburg — Brent’s Barbershop and Lee’s Barbershop. It’s about time we get something in there. From what everybody is saying, it is going to cost only $7 or $8 for a haircut. We need that right now as hard as times are with all of these people out of work. We sure appreciate them coming in here and helping us out.

.

To members of the Gordon Fire Department: If we had a good chief like Glenn Cornett and Danny Thornsberry, the fire department would be a lot better.

.

I cannot get over what I saw. There was a pack of dogs right before you get right to the end of the branch. This pack of dogs was roaming the whole neighborhood and fighting with other dogs. Can’t you people do something with your animals? This really gets old. I about ran over a dog because it was right in the middle of the road staring at me. Put your dogs up. And learn how to feed them.

.

I’ve wondered a lot about how a young man can be murdered in our town practically on Main Street and then the psychopaths that did it were left walking around town for another couple of hours if not longer. I just don’t get it. I will never understand that one. There is a severe slack mentality in the police force apparently.

.

I think the two magistrates, Wayne Fleming and Terry Adams, have a point about the government channel being used for political purposes. Did anybody notice, like I did, that at the ceremonies for the old Jenkins School dedication, Wayne Fleming, the Jenkins magistrate, didn’t even get interviewed by the government channel? The first one up was Codell Gibson, who doesn’t even represent Jenkins. Doesn’t exactly broadcast equality of treatment. Also, I notice that Jim Ward, when he was on the WXKQ Roundtable, didn’t show a scrap of fairness to Fleming and Adams. They voted opposite the other four (and as it turns out were smart to do that, since the whole Isom thing has a bad smell) but what Jim Ward said was wrong. Instead of accusing them of voting against 200 jobs, Jim, if he had an ounce of fairness, should have said that Fleming voted no because he knew nothing about the company and wanted a little time to study it — time which Ward ought to have taken, by the way — and that Adams was concerned about the impact on the people in his district and wanted some time to look at that. Ward gives the impression that nobody is entitled to disagree with him. He’s like a pouty little kid, he can’t abide any disagreement with his positions and gets nasty immediately if he’s opposed, but disagreements come with democracy and he needs to drop some of his ego and accept that, or we need to get a judge who can.

.

People, I just want to let you that this is my opinion. When a magistrate tries to keep something from coming in here to give people a little bit of work, he ought to be taken by the seat of his britches and thrown right in that river down there. I have never seen the beat. Nobody wants anything to come into Letcher County to help these people. What’s wrong with them? I just don’t know about people in Letcher County. Every time something tries to come in here somebody tries to knock it out.

.

I was listening to the news and heard them talking about possibly not having enough money to fix the roads this year. Couldn’t they take that $300 million they put into Rupp Arena and use it to fix our roads? But, no, they use the money to fix some kind of arena. That’s stupid.

.

Anyone attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new apartment complex in Jenkins will probably agree with this advice: Never get between Codell Gibson and a TV camera. He could run through the Seattle Seahawks defensive line if he spotted an opportunity to get in the news or share in the credit for something.

.

It took me a little while, but I finally figured it out. It’s okay for some cheerleaders to miss three or four practices, three or four games, then all of a sudden put on the computer that it’s girls’ night out and then show up the very next night and cheer at a game without any repercussions.

.

What ’s up with the Walmart in Whitesburg? I go there looking for a black powder rifle and they had only one and it was being sold on lay-away. So I go to the Walmart in Hazard and they had like 20 in stock. But it’s not just black powder rifles. The Whitesburg Walmart just plain stinks compared to any other Walmart anywhere. Ours has no selection on anything worth buying.

.

What really stinks is living in your little sheltered world and buying birth control and installing it in your daughter’s arm when she is 15, posting Christian scriptures on the computer all day and then telling somebody else to kiss your booty. Sister, there is a whole lot to kiss there, because you are all booty.

.

It must really be awful to be 50 years old and so insecure in yourself that you have to sit and let a 16-yearold boy rub your hair at a ballgame just to get your fix.

.

I would like for everyone to consider Renee Campbell for our coroner’s race. She is a wonderful person. At least she would be professional and honest.

.

Statutory membership requirements for the American Legion is chartered, set and controlled by Congress and cannot be changed by the RS or any legion post executive board. It can only be changed by Congress. Check into it.

.

I’m so glad Renee Campbell is running for coroner. We definitely need a change there.

.

This is the old cat killer. I just read the comment in Speak Your Piece where someone called me a sick individual. What’s sick is when I don’t even own a cat yet I can’t walk across my yard without stepping in cat manure. The sick individuals are the ones who let their stinking cats go on their neighbor’s property and get on their cars. Yeah, I kill them. I finally got that old big yellow one. This is the cat killer signing off, so put your cat under the bed.

.

I wish my neighbors on Stinking Branch would fix their septic tank before I have to call in and they will be forced to fix it. This is just a warning. Please fix your septic tank.

.

People of Letcher County need to get rid of Judge/Executive Jim Ward. He is responsible for all of these gas companies being around here. I thank you and I pray that you will vote against him.

.

I would like to applaud Magistrate Terry Adams for his wisdom in holding off on the decision on the secret company that was to come to Isom. For those of you who disagree here is a little analogy: You have a teenage daughter who comes to you and says a boy wants her to go to the prom with him. She can’t tell you his name or anything about his family, but you have to make a decision by tomorrow or he is going to take another girl. What would you do?

.

The workers in the Letcher County Courthouse in the different departments need to know what they are doing before they try to tell customers how to do it. They told my sister wrong information, and I do think they need to straighten up. They have double-collected from my sister on her trailer payment. We need to look into this to see if the payments have been made from the mortgage company. Where is the money going?

.

The Centers for Disease Control pinpointed this part of Kentucky, along the Virginia line, as having the worst health in the nation. There are plenty of obvious reasons for this dismal report, and they are well known. A slate dump at Carbon Glow has been smoldering for at least ninety years and emitting toxic pollutants for that entire period. When the air is heavy and the fog lies low in the valleys the odor is strong from Jeremiah to Red Star. This is just one example. There are many more. This. condition must be corrected and reversed, and the search for jobs, no matter how the county judge/executive feels, must not be allowed to further jeopardize the health of our people. I don’t think the Isom factory posed a danger, because that was no more than a grab for grants that was well exposed by Wayne Fleming and Terry Adams. What it did do, though, was to show the abysmal excuse for leadership in the county, and the indifference to their neighbors’ welfare. The people of the county must stand up and defend themselves, and come May and November, clean out the group that is so harmful to them and their future generations.

.

I think Letcher Middle School needs a new security policy. After my sister had done everything for my daughter and I came home, I went up there and all they did was buzz the door and let me come in. Hello. How did they know I didn’t have a knife or a gun with me? I think this needs to be checked out.

.

The activity surrounding the fiscal court lease agreement — the rush and push to conclude the agreement, the mythical nature of the company, the company’s fabrications about its location, or locations, the lack of any investigation of a situation which could have endangered a community, the lack of protection by the county attorney, and additional questions that arise as people review the meeting on LGC, have put a big cloud over the administration of the court. The credibility of the majority of the court has been seriously undermined. This situation must be aired out, and the actions of everyone involved must be defined. In order for a county to function the people must have trust in their government.

.

I would like for The Mountain Eagle to start putting the TV guide back in the newspaper. That’s one of the main reasons I buy the paper. It’s very useful.

.

Judge Ward apparently speaks with forked tongue. He claimed at Friday’s fiscal court meeting that the special meeting on the Isom tipple area had nothing to do with the company that might want to locate there. If that was true and it was only a lease change with the current owner, then why was the company even at the special meeting? And why did the judge use the government channel to accuse Wayne Fleming and Terry Adams of voting against the jobs that company will bring, and use the very numbers the company cited at that meeting?. You can’t have it both ways. It looks to me like, once the information came out that this company smells to high heaven, the judge started trying to weasel out of not having done his job by claiming something that clearly wasn’t true.

.

It appears to me that our county judge/executive was awfully anxious to push through that secret company that was coming to Isom. There must be a reason. When there is a decision to be made like that it is time to think and not react.

.

As a former coal miner I found it to be very insulting that ‘Team Mitch’ not only claims the support of coal miners, but seems to think that miners are so stupid they will believe he has tried to help them just because he says it. State and federal agencies have known for a long time that Appalachian coal reached its tipping point years ago and would be effectively mined out by now. Not that the coal is gone, but it has become so expensive to mine it is no longer competitive. McConnell has had access to that information too. Whether he used it or not depends on how much he cares about coal miners. Since he has never championed any type or program to help miners address life after coal, I would say he doesn’t care at all, except for the possibility of using miners’ lives as pawns and a club to beat his political opponents with. It’s infuriating to be taken for fools. It’s even worse to be fools and support the very liar who could have helped us but didn’t.

.

I’m just wondering about that man who drives that big white four-wheel drive truck. The man with the bushy beard looks like one of those Duck Dynasty stars, but in actuality it looks like the duck and he sounds like one too when he gets started quacking.

.

Just because a person drives the Channel 98 SUV shouldn’t give him a free pass to park that thing on the city sidewalk in front of the courthouse.

.

How did the state of Kentucky end up with two losers for the U.S. Senate? Looks like the law of averages would have given us one good senator. That Rand ‘Pretty Boy’ Paul just rolled off the ‘tater wagon and now he is campaigning for president already. Even when he was running for office he was forever trying to explain his way out of one stupid remark after another. He has no shame, he is still doing the same thing but he keeps his face in the newspapers and on national television and talk shows. If the Republican Party had any stupid idea about him being presidential material, they will surely think differently now. He is really scraping the bottom of the barrel in desperation making demeaning innuendos against an honorable lady, Hillary Clinton. Ms. Clinton should send him a thank you card for showing how dumb he is. All he accomplished was getting her a few million more votes come election time. I have one more snotty remark to make about Rand ‘Pretty Boy’ Paul. I don’t like the way you comb your hair either. Excuse me. Oh, you don’t use a comb, you use an eggbeater.

.

I am disgusted with both of our U.S. Senators. That ‘turtle head’ Mitch McConnell is about to get his due. Senatorial candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes is going to send him walking. Senator McConnell has repeatedly shown that he is not for the working poor or the working middle class people. He is all about promoting himself and his rich Republican cronies. Furthermore, he and his buddy Senator John Boehner from Ohio have spent the past six years obsessed with trying to defeat any worthwhile legislation brought about by President Obama. The American people would be much better off if those senators had directed their energy toward making Affordable Health Care successful. If Mitch McConnell had spent even one year of his life among the working class people of Kentucky, he would have a better understanding of what he is supposed to be doing in Washington. Do you think he ever had to endure the humiliation of standing in line to get commodity cheese and lima beans or using food stamps? Do you think his kids ever had to ask for free lunches? Do you think he or his family was ever denied health care or medication because he didn’t have money or insurance? What the hell does he know about the real world? He has spent his life living in fantasyland. It’s time to send the bum walking.

.

I see where Miss Mary Rebecca Polly died. I hate that. She was a wonderful, kind woman with backbone and I always thought the world of her. She was good to me.

.

Is it true that a certain local veterans organization is trying to get rid of some of its older members? Some of them are World War II, Korean War and Vietnam veterans. Some of them have 65 years of continuous membership. Why would they do that? This is hard to believe.

.

I see the middle-aged lady is still strutting around Martha Jane Potter Elementary School watching that older man. It looks as if she would be ashamed to act like that in front of that older man and her with small children. People are looking at her and talking about her, but she is so ignorant she thinks nobody notices her. I would be ashamed if I was her, and I would appreciate my little husband for the hard he does. While don’t you take care of your family and leave that older man alone? He is not interested in you.

.

I have thought a lot about the situation at Isom and the way Magistrate Terry Adams acted about the company wanting to locate at Isom. I know there is a community in that area, but the truth of the matter is most of the households in the area are occupied by people who stay in their houses with the TV on and in the summer with the air conditioner on. Many of them work all day and I can’t see that the noise would bother them much. I can’t see knocking 20 or more people out of work just because of a few. I am willing to hear a little noise if it will give people a job. Also, I see that it would clean up the mess that the loggers and Asplundh leave behind. You do not see these messes left in other states. Why should eastern Kentucky tolerate it? Terry, you were elected by the people; why not be for the people?

.

Please bring back the TV guide.

.

Okay people, you are on your own. I had the Weather Channel back to Whitesburg for the ‘Local on the 8’s’ for two days before it changed to Hindman, hometown of TVS Cable. You can call the Weather Channel yourself, or better yet call TVS, the company to which you pay huge bills to get carnal abominations and mostly stupidity on a TV these days, or the government propaganda it also uses. I just don’t care if the sun doesn’t shine and they can stick it where the sun doesn’t shine — although I am about out of `shine and need some more for the next weather storm you’re not going to know about. Anyone got any to spare? I am a poor hillbilly known as Klinger by some. I need a section 8, but not enough to cross dress as some do on their own. The editor may be able to tell you where to donate the `shine, but some already know. Watch for the ‘snowderflys’ who are always around.

.

For the life of me I can’t understand why Mitch ‘The Abominable No Man’ Mc- Connell would run an ad saying how he helped people who got cancer after not being willing to lift his little finger to keep them from getting such a horrible disease in the first place. How gullible does he think we are? Not all of us watch have such low IQ’s that we watch Faux News.

.

I think it is a shame that they call work off for the sanitation and senior citizens employees in Letcher County, but one or two select sanitation workers get to work on the road department crew and save their days when the rest of us have got to use them. How is that fair, Judge Ward?

.

Please bring back the TV guide. I rely on that every week.

.

I am a resident of Campbranch. I would like to know why Terry Adams is so worried about the dust and noise for the residents at the old South East Coal tipple at Isom when he wasn’t worried about it when Golden Oak and Sapphire were running the washer plant at Campbranch. We all had to worry about dust and noise, too. I guess people at Isom are more important that the people at Colson and Campbranch. That is alright, Terry. We will remember this on Election Day.

.

I say that if Magistrate Wayne Fleming wants to throw jobs out of Isom and Letcher County, we should vote him out of office.

.

I say vote for Wayne Fleming for county judge. Everybody loves you, Wayne. You are the only one who has the guts to speak up for the people in the county. You are the only one on the fiscal court who really cares about the people. If you had run for county judge, there are several who would have backed you. I would have sold my home to help you get that job. We all appreciate what you do. You could beat Jim Ward like beating a drum.

.

Our cable television service doesn’t carry the TV guide and we sure would like to keep it in the paper. Thank you very much.

.

I might be getting to close to a point here, I’m telling you by what I see on television is that these magistrates in Letcher County are stupid. An eight year old could do better than them. It’s amazing how these other counties are walking off and leaving us and they have the same court systems. Other counties know how to get things done. We’re against everything. I’d rather love and lost than to have never loved at all. Their approach is that they aren’t going to try anything because there may be some risks involved.

.

I’m renew my Mountain Eagle subscription because you stopped carrying the TV section.

.

Red Oak in Vicco is the place to buy your guns. I got the same pistol there for $50 cheaper than it is at other places. Red Oak is the place to go. Those are good people.

.

The fiscal court meeting certainly highlighted the proposed Isom factory proposal and should have left no doubts in anyone’s mind about its phony nature, but it raised more questions than answers. Why was County Judge Jim Ward so insistent on getting it approved? To make the county business-friendly? I don’t think so, I can understand why the three magistrates supported it. They just automatically vote with the judge and probably didn’t give it much thought at all. The judge, though, was shown by Wayne Fleming to have known, for some time, most of the information that came out in the meeting, but he still pushed as hard as he could for the lease agreement.
