I live in the McRoberts area and was very upset when the school closed. I am even more upset at the condition the school is being left in. In December, there were vans there that were, I am guessing, handing out items for the needy people in the area, which is a good thing. My concern is that whoever was there left boxes upon boxes of trash around the back of the school. It is still lying there. Just because our school has shut down does not mean it should be allowed to become an eyesore for the community. Also, I feel that the property taxes we in McRoberts pay should be lowered since we don’t have a community school for our children to attend. I pay higher school taxes because I live close to a school, but now there’s no school there. Therefore, our tax rate should go down. These are two things that need to be addressed by the Jenkins School District.

I would like for Letcher County to consider Scott Helle for the office of coroner. He has been active in the fire and rescue field for nearly 20 years. He is a caring and professional individual. He is husband to Gabrielle Helle and father of two wonderful children. He is knowledgeable and would serve the people of Letcher County well in the office of coroner. He is a Republican candidate.

.

The statement by Representative Combs and Senator Turner in last week’s edition that they do not oppose or defend the work of the Public Service Commission is disturbing. Who, then, is supposed to provide oversight of the agency that has the potential, at least, of allying themselves with the companies they are supposed to regulate, and causing tremendous hardship for the companies’ customers? They could not be so naive as to think that such a situation would be unique. Also, no one has asked them to reverse a national trend. The discussion and concern have been about the exorbitant rate increase for this area by what is, according to its own financial reports, one of the most successful utilities in the nation.

.

I am looking for someone who is Jewish who believes in a 24-hour Sabbath. Could you please reply next week if you read this?

.

Seriously, why is it so hard for Letcher County Central High School to hire a friendly secretary? The one they have now seems so grouchy and unapproachable I am actually afraid to go in there and pick up my children.

.

I ran into County Judge/ Executive Jim Ward in the store the other day and that man just stopped in the middle of the store and started talking with me. He stood right there and talked as long as I would stand there. That means a lot right there. If you pass some of these magistrates in store, watch them. They’ll run over top of you to get away from you. Jim Ward is a good man. I’ve known him for a long time. He’ll do you right.

.

I’m calling about the TV listing being discontinued. I enjoyed that more than anything else in The Mountain Eagle and I would like to see it continue because it was my TV guide. A lot of people are disappointed that it was taken out.

.

To the lady in Coon Hollow: I feel sorry for you.

.

Jim Ward went right on TV and did what he had just voted not to do. He criticized the magistrates who had brought the whole Refuel Carbon issue to the light, although they weren’t there to defend themselves. That government channel is getting out of hand. It’s being used for campaigning by the candidates, and just for showing off by others. It should be used for nothing but official meetings, and I don’t want my tax dollars going for anything else.

.

I was watching the fiscal court meeting on the government channel the other day and Wayne Fleming and Terry Adams complained about using the government channel for campaigning. Then Wayne mentioned his opponent handing out cards against him. That was campaigning, Wayne. What is the difference? The only campaigning I see on the government channel is at the court meetings when Wayne and Terry gets people in the audience to jump onto Jim Ward and then they jump in and back them. I don’t work for the county government, but from what I understand 99 percent of the stuff that Wayne and Terry bring up at the court meetings can be taken care of any day of the week. All they have to do is call or go by the county judge’s office, but they would rather wait once a month at the court meeting to bring it up and make it look bad on Jim. I think it is a shame that Wayne brought Jim’s wife into the court meeting.

.

I am a resident of Jenkins. I always voted for Wayne Fleming, but I won’t this time. You shouldn’t bring people’s children, grandchildren and wives into campaigning, so my family and I won’t be voting for Wayne this time.

.

I saw through this wooden pellet thing from the first and I do not understand the fiscal court buying into it the way it did. What does the court have to gain from this outfit that’s probably hitailing it out of here by now? The magistrates and Judge Ward had to know there was nothing to it. Now they keep changing the story and laying the blame for getting into this on somebody else. Nobody is going to believe any of it. One thing they should have thought about is that trust can be lost really fast, and it’s a lot harder to get it back.

.

This is the copycat cat killer. I believe in the mission of the cat killer and am following in his footsteps. I tracked down a wall-eyed Siamese with a truly nasty disposition this week, but it evaded me by running under a loose board in a tobacco barn. I will continue to hone my skills until I develop the necessary catkilling skills to be successful.

.

I agree that Renee Campbell would be a great person for the coroner’s position.

She is very honest and is very professional. Our current position holder obviously cannot manage anything as he continues to have so many personal problems going on.

.

I just saw that the governor has announced a program to improve Kentucky’s dismal health. He has established a board, which will meet quarterly, and report to him. There was also vague mention of legislative possibilities. What a bunch of nonsense. Talk about not being able to see the forest for the trees, these politicians don’t have a clue, and very little interest in getting one unless it is directly related to their reelection. The problems here are so obvious that even a legislator should be able see them. A prominent example is a slate dump in the community of Carbon Glow, which has been burning for at least 90 years and poisoning the air for that entire period. Another is broken septic tanks, which cause raw sewage streams across streets and highways. The recent fiasco about a wood pellet plant in Isom showed the attitude of the local government. That business, had it been real, would have polluted in numerous ways and would have been highly explosive, but the fiscal court tried frantically to get it. On the slate dump, local citizens have tried repeatedly to report this situation, which is endangering the respiratory systems of everyone for probably a 20-mile stretch, and the Letcher County Health Department in Whitesburg won’t even answer their phone or respond to messages. They are just as indifferent to the sewage runoff and the other dangers. The only way this health department and this state will respond is if they are forced, and the citizens should do this with legal charges and class-action suits.

.

Certain employees at Whitesburg ARH are getting a bad reputation for their personal relationships with other workers. I wish someone would do something about this.

.

I have a comment to make regarding the last fiscal court meeting. There was a man in the audience who stood up and said he didn’t want a company coming to Isom that causes dust, but then he said he owns trucks and made dust himself. So it is alright for him to make dust on people, but he doesn’t want dust on him.

.

To The Mountain Eagle: Please run the TV listings. Our TV cable company does not have a channel that has those so we would like to see the TV listings reinstated.

.

I think they should get rid of the Public Service Commission altogether. They go along with Kentucky Power Company every time they ask for a raise. I think this should be investigated.

.

The response by Senator Turner and Representative Combs beat around the bush and did not ever get to the point. There was no suggestion by the magistrates that Turner and Combs had promoted the rate increase, just that they were indifferent to it and to the plight of their constituents. The letter from the senator and representative was just political boilerplate, which with the change of a few words could be used to defend them against anything. It was very political and not very encouraging.

.

The Refuel Carbon issue is very discouraging. It points out a crisis in leadership far more dangerous than a polluting factory. The fiscal court meeting, and the one-sided follow up on the government channel roundtable highlighted deceit and a moral vacuum by the majority of the court. I fully expect they will continue in this path, at least until election, but they will never again have the respect and credibility to be able to function as a viable government must, It is not encouraging to think of this group being in control of the county’s finances at any time, but especially at this time, when we are already in economic crisis.

.

I was watching the fiscal court meeting on the government channel the other day and I thought they were going to fight. My daddy always told me that if a man couldn’t look you in the eye when he is talking to you, he is telling a lie. Well, I don’t see Jim Ward looking at anybody or anything other than a paper. He does what he does to the people of Letcher County and he thinks he is going to be judge again. Think wrong.

.

I agree with the person who commented in Speak You Piece that teachers stay on their cell phones and on Facebook instead of teaching our kids. My daughter came to me and asked me to help her with her schoolwork because the teacher was too busy on the computer to help her. The teacher told her to go skip that question and go to the next one. I think something needs to be done about that. They stay on Facebook updating their statuses instead of doing what they get paid for and that is to teach our kids. They need to block Facebook and take away their phones. If there is an emergency, the school can call somebody.

.

I’m surprised that the government channel carried the fiscal court meeting. I warned you, Rick. You are putting your eggs in the wrong basket, buddy.

.

I am sure glad we have two magistrates who will speak up for the people they represent. What is a matter with the rest of them there anyway?

.

Hey, Codell Gibson. What’s the matter, buddy? Jim got your tongue?

.

The TV guide needs to be put back in the newspaper. That is the main reason that I buy the paper because I have cable and there isn’t a TV guide channel so please return the TV guide.

.

Wondering eyes will put you on the road to hell. I would think about it.

.

Abraham Lincoln said something to the effect that almost all men could stand adversity, that to truly test the character of a man (or woman, I suppose) to give him power. The citizens of this county gave the fiscal court and the state officers a great honor when they elected them. A letter to the editor by the state officers, and the excellent account in the paper of some members of the fiscal court and their involvement with Refuel Carbon, makes one wonder if these politicians appreciate that at all.

.

Thanks for letting people know about what is going on, especially in Speak Your Piece. Lots of people buy that paper just to read to see what is going on because you all will speak the piece. I have known Wayne Fleming approximately 40 years. He fought in the jungles of Vietnam. He was wounded. He will fight for the people of Letcher County. He was instrumental in getting funds for Jenkins School apartment building. He wasn’t recognized at the ceremony to speak and wasn’t interviewed about it by the government channel.

.

So Jim Ward would like to get rid of Wayne Fleming and Terry Adams. We need more like them on the fiscal court so people can watch the government channel and know what is going on. Go to the polls and speak your piece on Election Day. That is one right that they can’t take away.

.

There is definitely something wrong with our court system here in Letcher County when a person can have a good job and then a lowlife drug addict that won’t work or take care of his family starts trouble and takes out a warrant for somebody. And the sheriff ’s department arrests the one that will work and puts them in jail. Or tries to detain them so that they can’t work. There is something wrong with this system.

.

I’m calling in regard to politicians not wanting to use the government channel to politick. I think the word government pretty well states that is what it is used for. But as a citizen I am getting kind of tired of taxpayer money being used to air grown men debating an issue instead of putting their heads together and doing something good for the county. It’s a waste of taxpayer money to have these people sit there in meetings and debate. That is all they do.

.

If the national or state commanders of the American Legion or VFW knew what goes on in the two clubs in Whitesburg, there would be some bad trouble. There would be a lot of people in trouble because the rules and regulations certainly aren’t followed. They are run like local bars. I think it needs to be checked in further by some of the older members. They can’t just throw older members out. That is a bunch of bull. These men and women served our country.

.

I’m sure a lot of people are going to be really upset about what I am going to say, but I really don’t care. This is my opinion. If you people don’t realize what is going on and get Jim Ward out of office, we are only going to down. I’m not saying put Carroll Smith back in. I don’t really know him, but I do know when he was in there we were not broke. We were not being burned like we have been with Jim Ward. He is the one that brought the gas companies in here and I wonder where a lot of the money went. And now we have started with this new thing that he is wanting to put down there at Isom. Some of the places don’t even exist. I would bet that somebody is getting a big bunch of money to get them to come in here. And if you all think they are going to hire 200 people, you are stupid. Unless something is done and Ward is out of here, Letcher County is only going to get worse. The only time you ever see him out and getting that big smile going is when he is cutting ribbons or is at a senior citizens center event. A lot of this he has nothing to do with, but when they snap that camera there he is. You all need to wake up and realize that he is playing all of you. And no, I’m not campaigning for anyone.

.

How many customers out there notice when they go to buy a platter of chicken that when they take the chicken out the platters weighs almost as much as the chicken does because somebody has taken the little sanitary bag and filled it with blood or water?

.

Rumor has it that the queen bee will be in the race for mayor of Jenkins. I guess the songbird of Bottom Fork would have to move to Jenkins so she could be the mayo pro tem. Is this just another tactic of the queen bee to gain access to the city park so she can move her festival back to her hometown? She won’t have any trouble with than since her sorority sisters are members of Jenkins Homecoming Festival.

.

Jim Ward has done it this time. I really thought he had done more for Letcher County than any other judge. I’m talking about more water lines, more sewer lines, more roads, helped more senior citizens, built the rec center, much, much more. Remember when the rec center first opened? Some of those magistrates didn’t even show up. They hated the idea. They campaigned against it. They really put Ward down over that. Now that it is so popular and successful, they are all for it. The city of Isom has always been a coal community. South East Coal Company, Golden Oak and all the small deep mines that have always contributed to miners and coal truck drivers for 75 years or more, how dare Ward to try to bring business to Isom by starting up a coal tipple that South East ran.

.

This is the old cat killer. I’ve got your cat caught and I put it in a cage with a copperhead. What do you think is going to happen after that?

.

If some people, particularly two certain magistrates, would just mind their own business and leave Jim Ward and his family alone, things would go a lot better.

.

Marty Baker, are you serious? After all of this are you really going to run for reelection to the office of coroner?

.

To the people who stole my ginseng the last two years: I know who you are. All three of you need to get you a one-way ticket to Russia.

.

I want to talk about this 76-year-old man who got caught with 83 grams of cocaine. That is a schedule I narcotic. That is a felony charge. He just didn’t get charged with that. He got charged with third-degree trafficking. That is a misdemeanor charge. He also got caught with Suboxone, hydrocodone and Xanax. And the only sentence he got was 365 days in the county jail. It doesn’t make any sense to me. You’ve got these young people who were born into this generation of drugs who got addicted to drugs. They get five years in prison on drug charges. Our court system is totally messed up. Someone needs to clean it up. The government needs to clean it up or we need to elect the proper officials to clean it up. It’s awful.

.

Why is it that Mitch Mc- Connell wants the coal miners to put him back into offi ce before he does anything to help them get a job?

.

Mitch McConnell cut food stamps and cut out long-term unemployment while trying to force outof work coal miners to go to work at nonexistent jobs.

.

I thought one cheerleader was bad to come out and attend one practice and cheer one game, collect all her gifts for senior night and quit. That is nothing. The one they have now has supposedly been a cheerleader all year and has missed maybe seven games. She got her gifts for two senior nights and hasn’t been back since, yet gets to go to girls’ night out.

.

Dear Heavenly Father: In the name of Jesus I pray that you please come soon and take your children home away from this wicked world. Amen.

.

I know this is early but I want to wish a special woman a happy birthday on April 2. She knows who this is.

.
