I think it is very sad that the little half-mile town of Jenkins down Main Street was covered in ice and snow of at least six inches at 7 a.m. on March 3 until the next day. It is disgusting to hear one of the city workers at lunchtime laugh about how little work they do or even have to do. What are we taxpayers paying for? Virginia gets their roads clear within a couple of hours even when it is still snowing.

.

I am putting together an article regarding former Jenkins football coach Glenn Polly for the Kentucky High School Athletics Association (KHSAA). Coach Polly as a player led the 1949 Whitesburg Yellowjackets to an undefeated Big Sandy Valley Conference Championship and then signed a scholarship to play at UK under Coach Bear Bryant. After graduation he coached high school football for many years. His last coaching job was at Jenkins High School during the 1992 season. I would like to contact any former players or assistant coaches that were with his Cavaliers football teams to interview for the article. My contact information is: David Owens at scoopowens24@yahoo.com or 606- 256-9870.

I’m a concerned citizen. I have lived in Whitesburg for 30 years. I think it is a shame what is going on in Whitesburg now. There was a murder on January 1. Now, there are other things going on. It looks to me like the mayor either needs to wake up or the city needs a special agent to come in here and bust some of these people for gambling and doing ungodly things. People need to take a stand against these wicked things that are going on in Whitesburg.

I am a citizen of McRoberts. Every time it snows we call the county judge’s office to get roadwork done. They always come. Sometimes they may be a little late because of trucks getting stuck or held up, but at least they do come. This winter I have noticed that after the roads have been worked, Magistrate Wayne Fleming drives up and down the hollows so people will think he has gotten the work done and will vote for him. The people of McRoberts haven’t forgotten the comment he made when he lost one of the primary elections in McRoberts. He said they should dam up McRoberts and made a lake out of it. I know definitely he said this because he said it to me. Now because Richard Neil Yonts is running against him, he wants everyone in McRoberts to vote for him and forget that he hasn’t done anything in the last eight to 12 years in McRoberts.

.

Let’s all work to re-elect Mitch McConnell so he can put our coal miners back to work.

.

Hey, county road department. Why is it that when it snows and ices that Pine Creek is one of the first that is cleared out real good but these other back roads rarely see any trucks, such as Bill Moore Branch? It’s the very last one to get scraped. Oh, yeah, I think it is because one of the county officials lives in Pine Creek. Please forgive me. Start doing your job.

.

Let’s give Renee Campbell a fair chance to become coroner.

.

In last week’s Speak Your Piece someone wanted to know who paid to put Jim Ward’s name and the Letcher County Fiscal Court on the county vehicles. For the person who made the comment, it has been on those vehicles for over six years. You need to turn your check in, get off the couch, and get out in the world to see what is going on around you. If you just now noticed that you have bad problems.

.

This is the copycat cat killer: Last week I built a cat trap. It was just an old paper grocery bag I put by the side of the road, but it worked. I hid myself, waited in the woods and pretty soon a black cat with a limp crawled right into the bag. You can imagine how happy I was. I had finally outsmarted a cat. The old cat killer would be so proud of me, I thought. Unfortunately, when I reached into the bag to grab that black devil it went right up my arm and scratched my right ear so bad I’ve been through three Band-aids. The cat took off faster than a dose of salts through a widow woman. I believe it was faking that limp all along.

.

I bet the Hemphill hooker is enjoying all of that pain medication she has been getting. She couldn’t care less about anybody else. It is all about her.

.

I cannot believe the deterioration at the Jenkins drama site. What are those hideous, unpainted structures along side the amphitheater road? They resemble school bus stops or outdoor toilets.

.

This comment is for the father who encouraged his teenaged son to beat up another teenager at the recreation center: You are a piece of scum for what you have done. You act like you are a tough guy. You need to spend 10 minutes with me and see how tough you are. Better yet, if you have to go to prison, there will be some fellows in there that will show you how tough you are.

.

Happy birthday. Mommy loves you.

.

The only thing I am going to say is that a certain beer store needs to get a new manager instead of having a young girl.

.

Happy birthday and happy anniversary to Larissa and Whitney.

.

The songbird of Bottom Fork was recently inquiring about property in Jenkins. Could she be looking ahead to being mayor pro tem?

.

Mitch McConnell’s friends finally released their plans for health care reform. If you go to an emergency room, you have to show proof of payment before you can be treated. Can you imagine if you fall off of a roof and don’t have your insurance card with you and they turn you away? I don’t know where my stupid insurance card is.

.

This is to everybody out there who is holding on to the mighty dollar: Have you ever thought about dying? Whenever you die, who is that money going to then? You sure can’t take it with you. I believe I would spend it while I had the chance.

.

I think the citizens of Jenkins should really think about who they are going to elect as the mayor of Jenkins. I think if anyone is qualified to run this city, it is Todd DePriest. He’s done a hell of a job as city manager. Hopefully whoever is elected will get rid of this so-called chief of police. He’s a joke. There, I spoke my piece.

.

To the person praising Mitch McConnell: It’s understandable why you signed your name anonymous. I believe most outof work coal miners see through Mitch McConnell after all he has done personally against them like voting to cut out food stamps and voting to do away with black lung benefits. He also voted against extending unemployment benefits to miners. My dad was an underground coalminer all of his life until he died of black lung. He never drew a penny for all of his suffering, thanks to people just like Republican McConnell.

.

I think it is funny how you can be mutual friends with someone on Facebook and that person doesn’t like or comment on your status, yet they send messages about that other person that dislikes you and how they are trying to win your approval and all the things they say about you. Then when you see them out together it makes you laugh that they really think they are friends.

.

Yes, Speak Your Piece needs to stop including trashy comments about animal cruelty. I agree with the lady who sent the article last week. I’ve also contacted the Humane Society, as I work closely with them. Their contact information is: Humane Society of the U.S. President and CEO Wayne Pacelle, 845 Meadow Lane, North Golden Valley, Minnesota 55422. We all need to work together on this. Numbers speak volumes, and we can put a stop to this ignorance. Speaking of volumes, ‘Ellen’ posted that everyone boycott this paper.

(You wouldn’t happen to be the same lady who submitted the comment you are now praising, would you? By the way, you list the name of the leader of the Humane Society of the United States, but give the address of the ‘Animal Humane Society,’ which is an organization that works solely in the state of Minnesota. And when and where did Ellen DeGeneres post that ‘everyone should boycott this paper’?)

.

I agree with the caller who was praising Mitch Mc- Connell for being a Christian man and standing up for this country’s Christian values. We do not need nor want a woman as our United States senator, as that is against God’s wishes. The true patriots and Christians who call our great state home are not ready for a woman to hold such a high position of national authority. Being secretary of state in Kentucky does not authorize one to make decisions of war and peace in Washington, D.C. Women do not possess the intestinal fortitude needed to handle making such important decisions.

.

This is in response to the response by the editor in last week’s Speak Your Piece: You responded to the woman who wrote in about the staff at The Mountain Eagle being animal haters and abusers. Well, she has a valid point. If you liked animals at all you wouldn’t keep supporting and glorifying Cat Killer. It is a shame what you are doing. I think an old fashioned Kentucky curse may take care of the printing of this garbage once and for all. You owe animal lovers an apology, and until you do, ‘To those who cause the animals sickness, devastation and pain, those and their families will suffer the same.’ So be it.

( Please provide the evidence that a comment phoned into a public forum from someone calling himself Cat Killer ever harmed an animal. To the best of our recollection, the so-called ‘cat killer’ phoned in his first comment many months ago in an effort to get a rise from his neighbor — or maybe from people like you who take him so seriously. Had he really harmed his neighbor’s pets, don’t you think said neighbor would have taken legal action? Geez. Use some common sense. And how is your wishing a curse on others any better than what was said by Cat Killer?)
