The amount of negativity I encounter on a daily basis is overwhelming. I just don’t understand. More people than not appear to surround themselves in a cloud of doom. Why does there always have to be something wrong? I could not bear to live every day of my life in worry, anger, frustration or fear. Throw off your mantle of depression. Blow away the clouds of doubt surrounding you. It will all be OK – really. Life is excruciatingly brief – way too short to not be joyful. Did you wake up this morning? Rejoice. Have faith in God and give your worries to Him. He really does exist and He really does love you. Trust that He will take care of your needs — and I don’t mean with one eye open because you don’t really believe – and He will. You have no idea how deeply your attitudes and behaviors affect those around you. A smile given at just the right moment can change someone’s life. Let others see your joy. Thank you.

Why don’t the people who call in to tell us how they live their lives according to the Bible and how we should, too, point out how their ancient book also prohibits men from cutting their hair, forbids people from wearing mixed-fiber clothing, disallows planting two different kinds of seed in their fields, and prohibits eating shellfish? Do such callers follow these rules? I haven’t seen too many men with waist length hair around, but I have seen lots of obviously evil gardens with more than one type of crop. People eat shrimp all over the place. The Bible also commands slaves to obey their masters, parents to stone unruly children, and calls men of faith with multiple wives and concubines heroes. I’ve seen lots of unruly kids, but no one stoning them, thank goodness. But why just choose to be malicious to gays and lesbians knowing that they are also God’s creations?

I read with amusement in a recent edition a comment from a caller who said they would vote for Hillary Clinton because she is a woman. That is like saying they voted for Barak Obama because he was black, not because of his qualifications. The caller went on to say how great Bill Clinton was because he reduced the ‘deficient.’ I assume they meant the budget deficit. I will overlook the spelling. First, the person must not have taken the high school citizenship class also known as Civics or was absent the day that the three branches of government were taught. The legislative branch of government, which is made up of the senators and representatives, not the president, prepares the national budget. Therefore, a budget deficit or surplus is the sole responsibility of the legislative branch of government. It is prepared and sent to the executive branch of government, which is controlled by the president and vice president. The president can either approve or veto the budget. If it is vetoed, the budget is sent back to the legislative branch, which then can revise it or pass it over the president’s veto with a two-thirds vote of the legislative branch. The president ‘is not responsible’ for a budget surplus or deficit. A budget surplus or deficit is the result of government spending based on the amount of federal income taxes collected. If more taxes are collected than dollars spent there is a budget surplus. If fewer taxes are collected than dollars spent there is a budget deficit. Republicans controlled the legislative branch of government from 2004-2006. They prepared and administered the budget during that period. If there was a surplus or deficit during that period, it was because of the Republican legislature not because of Bill Clinton. The caller also mentioned Clinton’s scandal and how it was unimportant. The morality of any nation is the result of the morality of its leaders. This is true of both parties of government. That is why the morality of the United States is at an all time low.

(We note that you picked on the poor caller who mistakenly used ‘deficient’ instead of ‘deficit.’ There’s a chance the mistake was made when we got lazy and proofed that week’s comments with ‘spell check’ instead of our own eyes. However, we did catch and correct a mistake you made when you wrote ‘the morality of it’s leaders.’ We changed ‘it’s’ to ‘its’ for you. You can thank us later.)

I have to say that I feel sort of sorry for the folks at The Mountain Eagle who are tasked with preparing the Speak Your Piece section weekly for publication. It has to be discouraging and downright depressing to have to assemble and print the ignorant and hatefi lled rants we see in Speak Your Piece nearly every week. For example, just last week I read that someone proposed that we exile homosexuals and ‘foreigners’ to an island somewhere. It is scary to think there are people who still think like this. I will not try to enumerate the fallacies in the logic of this statement for obvious reason. Nonetheless, The Mountain Eagle has my sympathies and I applaud you for continuing to provide what you feel is a public service. I suppose that even ignorant, hatefilled individuals need an outlet for their voices to be heard, if for no other reason than to show our children the dark and troubled past from which we have come. I realize that this statement, if printed in Speak Your Piece, might evoke a response from some readers wishing to tell me something like, ‘If you don’t like it here, then leave,’ or that I should be exiled as well. I will try to preempt these responses and save them the trouble by stating that I am a Letcher County native, and have proudly been one all my life, and I have every intention of staying put. My solution to the problem of ignorance and hate is not to abandon my home, but to try to make a positive change.

( And we appreciate it when readers like you challenge those comments you consider hateful and ill informed. We wish it would happen more frequently.)

This is one of God’s preachers. I would like to tell the preacher out there who is trying to commit fornication and adultery that he needs to read his Bible. He needs to stay out of other people’s beds. He needs to be behind the pulpit preaching the truth and living the truth.

This is to the Harley guy: It isn’t the big woman on the back of your motorcycle that breaks it down. A Harley is nothing but junk. I have owned several Harleys in my life. The only thing I can say is that I am proud that I was brought up to be a thief because I stole all of mine. I would be one mad individual if I had paid good money for a piece of crap like a Harley. Don’t go off on big woman. A big woman will do you just as good as a little woman. Now the bike is not worth hauling a big woman on.

.

You know, if everybody worshipped God the way they do the University of Kentucky Wildcats, I think this country might have a turnaround and God would be more merciful.

.

Why would a beautiful brunette in the health care field run around with a little Oompa-Loompa from Jenkins?

.

Happy birthday, my brother. I thank you. You are just my half brother, but to me you are my whole brother. And today is my little sister’s birthday. Over the years we have parted, but I see her around every now and then. She comes and visits me sometimes, but she never says anything. She’s always off to the side in a stare. What do you want me to say, little sister? I love you. I have always loved you and nothing can ever change that. Hard times we were raised in, that’s true. Poverty is a terrible thing, but we weren’t the only ones raised like that. I wish you the best, both of you.

.

I wish the coach in Jenkins that everybody looks up to would try to go to Connecticut or North Carolina and get a job in the school system. Let’s see how that works for him with the education he’s got.

.

It tickles me to death that UK lost the NCAA national championship basketball game. I’m so glad that Connecticut won. I have been rooting against Kentucky all through this tournament.

(You’re not going to tell us why you rooted against UK? Inquiring minds want to know.)

.

Another reason we need a new sheriff is that he is paid to control drug problems and stealing, but Danny Webb is too busy putting up election signs in daylight in front of everyone. We already know that you are running for re-election, so why not work? The people are paying you to work. Hopefully someone else will be elected sheriff to clean up our community. Hopefully it will be someone who actually cares.

.

I was driving off of Cowan Mountain the other day and a Ford Taurus about ran me off the road. I got your tag number and I told the cops that your left rear taillight is busted. Next time, I won’t move out of your way.

.

I think the couple from Potter’s Fork who is bashing their daughter-in-law and saying they need to raise the grandchildren should look at the job that they did raising their own two kids before they start trying to raise somebody else’s children.

.

I wonder if being real good friends with a secretary’s daughter could erase a few absentees and tardies. I know one girl keeps missing a whole lot of school and nothing ever seems to happen about it.

.

To a certain person: Today and every day you are in my heart to stay. I love you. You are my angel.

.

Hey, Mr. Harley. You are still bragging on yourself. That is your problem. You are no more beautiful than any of the women in eastern Kentucky, whether they are heavy or not. You have a $30,000 Harley. Well, that impresses me. I bet that Harley looks a lot better than you do. You need to polish up your attitude as good as you make that Harley look and then you’ll get more women than you want. Actually, I hope that none of the women in Letcher County have anything to do with you. They are better than you.

.

If you have any good prescriptions that you are throwing away for pain medications such as Percocet, Lorcet or Lortab, I’m even willing to come to your house and pick them up to keep from having them thrown in the water system.

.

Thanks go out to the Sandlick and Kingscreek fire departments for helping Little Cowan residents fight fires around their houses. If it hadn’t have been for those firemen, I think every one of the houses would have gone up in flames. Nobody ever saw the forestry people. If they were there, they were hiding. It is a wonder that Little Cowan hasn’t been burnt to the ground. We really want to thank the Sandlick and Kingscreek fire departments.

.

To the person who criticized Magistrate Codell Gibson for telling Magistrate Wayne Fleming to more or less to shut up when he was talking: It is about time someone told Wayne Fleming to shut up. Even a Christian gets tired of rudeness. As for Judge Jim Ward’s glasses, I only have readers and I take mine off a hundred times a day. You, caller, are a rude, childish person who is probably a Wayne Fleming family member or a groupie. I am sick of Wayne and Terry Adams. As soon as the camera is turned off them, the bull starts. I voted for Terry last time, but not this time when he grabbed Wayne’s coattail and won’t let go. So go, go, Brad Collie.

.

In memory of my mother, Ollie Sue Blair, whose birthday was April 14. I know that she is having the best birthday ever in heaven with her loved ones.
