Neon has a real nice Little League baseball field. The only thing I see wrong with it is that everybody I talk to say they don’t even know it is up there. They need to put up some bigger signs and let people know where it is. It’s a nice place.

.

To a teacher at Jenkins: You are supposed to set a good example for your students and especially your children and grandchildren. You have been going out with a married man since last summer and his wife finally caught you in the act with him. You claim to be a Christian and so does he. You two have brought havoc to two churches. That’s a great example. Keep spreading the good news.

.

Well, the election is over and I predict that everybody in the Letcher County Courthouse will keep their jobs because of that incumbent TV station that is on cable. All of the incumbents campaign on the government channel year-round, and that is not right. I think anybody who is running for public office should get to use that channel just like the incumbents do, because it is paid for by the people. And one certain official stays on that channel all the time.

.

Alison Grimes had my vote over McConnell until I saw in last week’s paper that she is out kissing the behinds of the coal operators. We don’t need a woman in office is going to lick the behinds of the coal operators, and you can bet that is what Grimes will do when you see her out running around with the likes of Patton and Greg Stumbo. I might as well vote for McConnell. We need a senator who will speak the truth instead of leading us to believe these coal jobs are coming back when they know good and well they are never coming back.

.

I see that the County Judge and the County Attorney got caught in a bunch of lies about the McRoberts Community Center mess, with the proof in writing. The County Judge just sat there with his eyes cast down, apparently unwilling to face his accuser, the public, and the TV cameras. The County Attorney tried to lie his way out of his situation by accusing someone else. Not an edifying sight, and not what this county needs in a county judge or attorney. Honesty and doing the best thing for the people of this county is what we need, not lies and politics.

.

I was calling concerning a comment printed a couple of weeks ago in Speak Your Piece by someone saying how good of a man Luther Tackett is. I wish people knew the real Luther. He is told to take the jail inmates out to cut grass, and it’s all about who you know when it comes to whose grass gets cut by the side of the road. Luther takes the inmates out and digs graves with them. I know several people who have seen that.

(Assuming the graves are being dug for those whose families otherwise could not afford it, what’s wrong with that? And given the issues with security, don’t you think that more people than Mr. Tackett are involved in deciding where the weeds and grass are cut?)

.

This is to a lady who lives in Jenkins: I have never told any lies on you or said a word about you to anybody except good words, and those were to my sister. The lies that were told on you came from your two cousins who live below me. They lie more than anybody I know. If you check this out you will find out that is exactly where the lies came from that I was supposed to have told. You have a nice life.

I wish Randy Blair would quit running for office. He is a perpetual candidate every year and he should have known that when he changed from a Republican to a Democrat nobody was going to vote for him. His big billboards and picture on the side of a truck were terrible. Somebody tell him to quit running. The people of Letcher County don’t want him in office.

(The fact that Mr. Blair was elected to the office of Magistrate in District Three not too many years ago makes it hard to label him a ‘perpetual candidate’ just because he lost in his two subsequent races. He is by no means the only candidate who has run for office more than once and been beaten each time. Were Mitt Romney and Al Gore perpetual candidates? Win or lose, we should give a tip of the cap to all candidates who have the nerve to put their name up for local election. It can’t be easy for any of them to lose.)

.

I see that the voters did not support one candidate who is widely rumored around the county to have been fired for stealing a ton from his employer but somehow escaped prosecution. A lot of us were hoping that last week’s primary would also rid the county of a patriarch and his careercriminal sons, but regrettably it did not. Do people not care about the character and ethics of those they vote for? Do the voters only care what the officeholder does for them, likely at the expense of the rest of the county taxpayers, and not about character? Apparently. I guess it’s true people get the government they deserve, but the majority is imposing that bad government on the rest of us, and we at least don’t deserve it.

.

Randy Blair would like to thank everybody that voted for him and helped him during the election. I think he ran a good, clean race. He is a number one fellow and he is a good family man. We want to thank everyone who voted for him and we appreciate it very much. He’s got a lot of friends and that’s good. He knows a lot of cutthroats, too.

.

During this primary election we heard from all the politicians about how much they have Letcher County at heart. Now that the election is over, let’s see how many of the politicians’ campaign signs are left hanging on telephone poles and trees throughout the county. There should be a mandate that you should have to post a bond to put up posters. The quantity of the posters as well as where they are going to place them and be responsible for going back and getting them after the election is over.

This is the old cat killer. My youngest daughter just married a cat lover. He’s got about eight of them. He’s not bringing them to my house. Anyone have any suggestions?

(While most know your comments about cats are made in jest, at least one of readers — now a former reader — never quite got your humor. Here’s what she wrote to us upon receiving her annual renewal notice last week: ‘ I have better things to do than read comments from the cat killer, like clip my toenails. And I’m certainly not going to pay to read trash like that. I’ve already subscribed to another paper from Kentucky.’)

.

Okay, folks, watch for a ton more TV ads smearing Alison Grimes. Grimes still has a slight lead over ‘Gridlock King’ Sen. Mitch McConnell, and the Senate campaign committee reports that Mitch’s billionaire supporters are upset, having already spent $591,274 to Grimes’s $127,893. But not to worry, Mitch, Karl Rove doesn’t care about Kentucky, but he sure as heck cares about those juicy billionaire tax breaks and other goodies you deliver at our expense. That’s why those Rove- linked super PACs just dumped $5.2 million into your campaign just last week. It’s known as protecting their ‘Mitch investment.’ Mr. Rove let it slip: ‘A couple of million dollars in unanswered TV does wonders.’ So watch for a tidal wave of attack ads against Alison Grimes — clear to November. Maybe it’ll work, Mitch. It has before. Or maybe we’re not as dumb as you think. Maybe you won’t buy this election.

.

This is the old coffee break coal miner. My own father had less than five years in the coalmines and he drew black lung benefi ts, but he smoked cigarettes and chewed tobacco. I’ve never done any of it and I spent 44 years in the coalmines. I’m not knocking my father. I am just bringing you people to the truth. I don’t think that the coal companies should have to pay for what the R.J. Reynolds tobacco company did to the people. You ought to be suing them. You’d get a lot money out of it. I’m just trying to tell you the truth.

.

Well, the dirty campaign by Letcher County Judge/ Executive Jim Ward and Letcher County Attorney Jamie Hatton to smear the two magistrates who aren’t robotic yes-men to the Judge failed big-time. The magistrates both won their primaries handily. Now is a good time to turn the tables and vote out the judge and the County Attorney and get somebody in there who is not trying to run a wholly-controlled political machine that only represents the people who kowtow to them. All of us are sick of the way they play politics instead of doing what is right, so let’s do something about it.

.

Anybody in the Millstone area who voted for Woody Holbrook for magistrate should have just as well voted for Codell Gibson. You are going to be put on the back burner for the next four years. He is going to take care of everything from the Thornton and Sergent areas all the way down to wherever the district goes. Think about it. You are cutting your own throat.

(On what basis do you make that assumption?)

.

Congratulations to Mitch ‘The Abominable No Man’ McConnell. He held the percentage of his own party who voted against him to only 40 percent.

.

Speak Your Piece, this is the cat killer. I enjoyed your little comment about the Fancy Feast. You know when you feed cats and keep food piled up out there you bring rats and cockroaches. I don’t care for people having a cat or a dog, but they don’t need 15 or 20. They don’t even need two. I did enjoy your little comment. When I turn 70 I am going to get me a little Yorkie so it can warn me who is going to break in on me. I don’t even like dogs, but I am fixing to start liking them in four more years.

.

A son of one certain offi cial got caught red-handed breaking into a trailer, and he was out of jail almost before the word spread. This is at least the third felony he has allegedly committed, apparently without consequences.

On page five of Sarah Palin’s new book I learned something I didn’t know and, if I were she, something I wouldn’t want anyone to know. But Sarah hustles this fact to the front of the book because she sure as hell wants us to know it. According to the book, Sarah surprised Todd with a ‘nice, needed, powerful gun’ for Christmas in 2012. It was a ‘small act of civil disobedience,’ Palin writes, prompted by ‘the anti-gun chatter coming from Washington.’ What was inspiring that socalled anti-gun chatter in Washington in December of 2012? Oh, right: Twenty children and six teachers were shot dead in their classrooms by a deranged creep with a ‘powerful gun.’ And before the grieving mothers and fathers of Newtown, Connecticut, could put their dead children in the ground, Sarah Palin ran out gun shopping. Buying Todd a gun in the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary was ‘fun,’ Palin writes — and, again, an act of ‘civil disobedience,’ because gun nuts are a persecuted minority. This paragraph about gun shopping in December of 2012 — one first grader at Sandy Hook was shot 11 times — ends with Palin bragging about her boobs. I’m not kidding. Okay, I have to put the book down. I’m five pages into Good Tidings and Great Joy and … Jesus Christ … I have got to put down this toxic little stain of a book. I’m going to go wash my eyes out with hydrogen peroxide. Be right back.

.

To a certain person: I don’t speak of you to my family, friends or anybody else, because you are not worth it. You are the one who lets everybody else rest by talking about me all of the time. I have heard all of it. If I talked about you the way you do me, everyone would know what a liar you are. Just go ahead and keep up that good person act if it gives you self-esteem. Just go ahead and knock yourself out, troublemaker.

.

I’m calling about the comment about the woman in Coon Hollow. I’ve been waiting on you for many years. Whenever you get smart enough to leave the man you have been with for 20-some years then we’ll get together and you’ll never have to worry about anything.

.

Okay, Danny Webb, let’s see if you are truthful. Let’s get rids of the drugs from the mouth of Millstone to the forks of Millstone. Let’s clean all the drug dealers out.

.

The nosey secretary needs to mind her own business about what clothes my kids wear to school. I have seen her kids wear clothes that are a heck of a lot shorter than what mine wear. She is just a secretary. She isn’t much of an authority at all. So keep your nose out of my business.

.

Thank you, Stanley. You are doing an excellent job on the cemetery. It looks so good, even down to the highway. The parking lot was even beautiful. Thanks again.

.

To the dumb SOB who said he is a coal miner: I want him to know that there is black lung. My father passed away on May 24, 1955 — 59 years ago. I love my father. Black lung disease does exist and he’s not a coal miner if he doesn’t know that. My name is Paul Stephens. Thank you.
