I’m a concerned citizen. A few weeks ago we were at a food store in Whitesburg and a woman left three kids inside her car while she went inside the store. Somebody called the city police, who came and investigated. Does anyone know if she was charged or if social services were called? There are a lot of people being hurt in this county, especially children.

Mitch McConnell is one of the most experienced U.S. Senators in Washington, D.C., and the longest serving Senator in Kentucky history. He is the seventh most senior Senator and fourth most senior Republican in the Senate. With the United States now at the lowest ebb since World War II, we are desperate for experienced, polished leadership now. We are not in need of on-the-job training. Harry Reid has vigorously blocked all legislation for six years that has been coal-related and has not made any attempt to budget for the same length of time that would help eastern Kentucky in any way. Those who do not understand our immediate, desperate need to revive our coal industry back to full production are misinformed, don’t care, or are just plain ignorant. Mitch will change things if Republicans gain control of the Senate in November, which is the best and only hope we have in eastern Kentucky before the election in 2016.

If you are old and say you aren’t able to go out on calls, why should you hang out at the Gordon firehouse and run up our electricity bill when all you do is sit there and talk about people? I think the state should come in and check this out. If you are 75 years old and can’t get out and go on calls, why should you be there? Seems to me you are just trying to knock everybody out of having a good firehouse.

(Managers don’t play in baseball games and coaches don’t play in football and basketball games. Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you can’t lead.)

I’m not one to complain, but when you go through a certain stop in Camden Road in Jenkins and you are driving more than five miles per hour, you will get cussed because young kids are playing out in the road. When the Camden people come through Joe’s Branch they have no respect for us. They’ll do 70 miles per hour through the hollow and they’re not supposed to. They should respect us, too.

Congratulations to City of Jenkins administrators. You have generated so much new money from high water bills and occupational taxes and profits from the swimming pool that you have to burn some of the money. While the city reservoir is running over with water, you find it necessary to run a 50 horsepower, 480 volt, three-phase water pump around the clock to pump water from the creek into the lake that is already running over. To the citizens of Jenkins: Wake up. We must elect some new people who will spend our money wisely instead of piss it away.

If we had a president with half the get up and go as the Israelis do we would find ourselves in a better situation. If three girls were kidnapped and killed in the U.S. the president would be like three is not that many. Heck, 300 or 3,000 wouldn’t matter; we have a lot more girls. If we were getting rockets fired at us from say South America hitting in Texas, California or Arizona, Obama would be like, well they have a right to do so. We don’t own the skies and can’t help if their rockets run out of gas over our country.’ This president has cost us a whole lot more than our world credibility. Our manufacturing jobs have been able to move out of the country yet still get tax breaks and pay much less tariffs on importing their products back to the U.S. He has destroyed, as he promised, the coal industry. By doing so he has had increased in our area the unemployment rate, the crime rate, domestic violence, drug and alcohol addiction, and abuse of our seniors and children. I don’t know about some of you, but I can’t stand any more increases at my house. Just got my power bill and yep, it has increased. Why not make it so costly for companies moving out of the U.S. to import their products into this country it will break them? Maybe then we could get jobs other than coal mining. I think we also have a county government that is making sure we get less for more. Here we are spending coal severance money to widen a road for a camping area and to build a store to increase tourism. Fishpond Lake has always been a free recreation area. Now our fiscal court wants to turn it into a moneymaker. Get real. Folks have used this lake for years for fishing, camping, picnics, family reunions and many other things — all for free. We are not going to pay to use an area that we the people own. Considering the increases from Obama’s government along with the increases from the county government we will continue to increase our downward spiral. This is just my opinion.

’My name is Max and I turned 7 today. Please send a birthday wish to my address at-.’ That is what a special note said this past July 4 — one that was tied to balloons and let go by a birthday boy in Haymond. I wish you could have seen his face when he opened a very special letter that was sent to his post office box last week. This letter had his name on it and contained his birthday note plus money. The sender left off his or her return address, so I would like to say thank you from a very proud mother for sending back his birthday wish. You have made a lasting memory for all of us, especially an enthusiastic little boy. God bless you.

The Letcher High School Class of 1989 really rocks. An amazing 25th-year reunion was held earlier this month at 4 Star Village. We even had some old flames reignite after 25 years.

The next time I find cat poop and cat litter dumped in front of my mailbox, steps will be taken to take care of the problem. How would you like it dumped back in your car? Don’t run, hide and act like you don’t know what you have done. I haven’t done anything to you,but try to get you to understand that my husband is sick, but you don’t want to act like a human being. When you do it again, don’t act like you don’t know why when the consequences come home to you.

.

To that smart aleck who wants the cat killer to come out and tell his name: Why won’t the Lone Ranger take off his mask? Why won’t Dolly Parton take her wig? The cat killer isn’t going to tell you anything. That would take all of the fun out of it.

You all need to try to find another place to buy propane this year. We were treated awful at a certain place last year and this year it will be worse. You better start looking for a different place to buy propane.

We knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly and in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you. You did not go alone. A part of us went with you the day God called you home. You left those peaceful memories. Your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. As God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Who is the idiot that put a comment in Speak Your Piece that we need leadership in Kentucky like Mitch McConnell? It’s been 30 years and there hasn’t been any leadership in Kentucky. Last I saw on TV, he said it wasn’t his job to bring jobs to Kentucky. You think he is going to turn around after 30 years and bring jobs to Kentucky?

.

This is to the person who plans the meals for the Letcher County Senior Citizens Centers: I think you must have irregular bowels or something, because all that is on the menu is mustard greens, pinto beans and butter beans. Let’s don’t forget the chicken. These people aren’t crazy. They are just old.

.

I can understand that withdrawal from drugs may make you feel bad. Imagine how your kids feel when they are going hungry because you are lying on the couch and can’t get up because you feel bad. Think about it.

.

If the Jenkins mayor would spend as much time in City Hall taking care of the city’s business as he spends in the new restaurant campaigning, we would have a more efficient government.

.

I don’t think a photograph of someone drinking beer should make the front page of a local paper. It makes me sad that little children will see this. It appears to me that a town is trying to promote their beer sales. Let’s all pray for our community.

.

This is to the woman who drives the blue Challenger in Whitesburg. I can’t tell what is prettier — you or that car. You look like an Indian princess in it.

.

It’s a shame when a 40-year-old woman with physical and mental disabilities cannot get her SSI, but an 18-year-old with a drug overdose can get theirs in six months. I think the government needs to look at these cases and situations. Things need to change. It isn’t right when people work and things happen to them physically and mentally and they try to work. They should be able to get SSI. These young kids who have never worked a day in their lives can take the wrong drugs and overdose, and with a snap of their fingers they get SSI.

.

I told you not long ago that you should try to get your church in order. We are not the judge or the jury, God is the one who takes care of it all.

About a year ago I got a stranger call. This woman said we need you to come up here. We need your vote. I asked her why she needed my vote when I knew nothing about her organization. She said that members of the community had to vote on their council. She said if you help us, we’ll help us. I voted. I had no idea who the names were on the paper. I got shanghaied into doing something I knew nothing about. Don’t let people shanghai you just to fit in or be happy. If you don’t belong somewhere, you know it. If you do belong somewhere, you know it.

People manipulate people too much for self gain, satisfaction or status.

I watched the fiscal court meeting about three months ago on Channel 98. Someone asked about the horse trail from the top of Pine Mountain to Cowan, which is the county road from the early 1900s that was used to haul supplies to businesses in Whitesburg from Virginia. The court told the county attorney to check records to see who owns the road. This has been going on for four years or more. Are these more broken promises or election politics? We need this horse trail. Thanks.
