If you know anything about someone stealing the radiator out of the air conditioner in my RV, please let me know. I would return the favor.

I’d like to say a big thank you to Luther and the men for mowing the grass at Arlie Boggs Elementary School. We really appreciate you all.

Mitch McConnell is our only sure hope to quickly revive our crippled coal industry in eastern Kentucky. Those who try to denounce Mitch for not helping with the coal industry are badly misinformed and are replacing knowledge with ignorance and slander. The truth is that Senate President Harry Reid has been successful in eliminating 6,000 coal jobs in eastern Kentucky alone. Presently, Harry has 200 bills on his desk that he belligerently refuses to act on. The bills most likely involve salvation of the coal industry and would eliminate some of the severe EPA guidelines and penalties and allow eastern Kentucky to produce coal. Those of us who want to work and continue to have pride and prosperity must stand up and vote. Those who won’t work and want to draw a check and other subsidies instead are being used to spread false propaganda through ignorance.

A certain woman in Jenkins is probably having second thoughts about marrying ‘the man of my dreams’. She thought her new squeeze would guarantee her prestige, money and a mansion by the lake. Little did she know she would end up living in a warehouse.

.

I know that vote buying is illegal, but isn’t there another way to skirt the law? What if a mayor hires a person and pays him $600 a month to collect alcohol taxes that don’t amount to half that amount? And what if that same new employee’s wife is on the city council; is that a conflict of interest? Wake up voters; we have to clean house in November. Does that administration think we citizens are stupid?

My 18-year-old son and his friend were with a group they no longer felt comfortable being with on Saturday and were lucky enough to be in Whitesburg, Kentucky. Had they ended up in a town where people didn’t care there is no telling how things would have ended up. Because the people in Whitesburg cared enough, these boys were given the opportunity to stay where they were until we could pick them up, which was a six-hour drive that was actually eight hours because of construction work. One gentleman stopped and talked to the boys and stayed with them for a couple of hours. He actually offered to drive them all the way home. In the end, the boys did let him bring them to the Taco Bell in Hazard to meet us, which was a blessing to us. Unfortunately after the long drive and worrying for hours about whether they were really in a safe place, we didn’t even think to write the man’s name down or get the names of the people at the store who helped them. These boys were blessed to end up in a town where people cared and offered them food and a place to stay. I will thank God every day for watching over these boys this past week and knowing just where the boys needed to end up. The address we were given to pick them up Highway 119 North. I believe they were at a video store or a shop. I’m not real sure, but I just can’t begin to tell each one of these people how blessed we are for all they did for these boys. I really would like to thank them all so very much for watching out for Clint and Dillon.

I want to give a shout-out to Karen Tilley for what she did at the Whitesburg Post Office. If you are married you should always accompany your spouse in the post office. If not, you may be the next one arrested for having to beat someone up. Kudos to you, Mrs. Tilley.

I’m writing to comment on the report about the fiscal court meeting in the July 23 edition of The Mountain Eagle. The article stated that District 5 Magistrate Wayne Fleming is opposed to giving $100,000, which had been allocated to the Boone Fork Senior Citizen’s Center, a facility which apparently has been condemned and slated for demolition, to the Hemphill Center. Since the closing of the Boone Fork Center, seniors are being transported to the Hemphill Center, a mere two miles away. To me, it seems ridiculous that this should be seen as anything but a commonsense move. Former patrons of the Boone Fork Center are enjoying the Hemphill Center as a place to meet and enjoy a ‘sense of community.’ Why should the money not follow them to their new home? This seems like such a trivial matter, yet Magistrate Fleming feels compelled to argue and even chastise his fellow magistrates for even bringing up such an idea. He even went so far as to threaten closing the Blackey center. I suppose this would be the punishment that Mr. Fleming suggests for Magistrate Adams for bringing up the issue in the first place? This issue is a microcosm of what is wrong with Letcher County politics and why many ordinary citizens like myself shake our heads and roll our eyes when we read about or hear about the Letcher Fiscal Court and its proceedings. I mean, examine the facts here. The Boone Fork center isn’t suitable for habitation. There is a perfectly suitable facility located just two miles away at Hemphill. The $100,000 allocated to Boone Fork, if not used by Hemphill, would be used how? This should be a no-brainer. Instead, Mr. Fleming takes this opportunity to accuse the other magistrates of ‘taking our money and putting it into Hemphill,’ causing further division and ill feelings. This asinine and archaic line of thinking needs to be voted out of Letcher County politics forever. The culture and community of Boone Fork simply cannot be that different from Hemphill, and to object to the money following the patrons to Hemphill and consolidating the two centers is nothing more than flawed, mean-spirited, and divisive thinking. I understand Mr. Fleming’s desire to stand up for his district — I really do — but do we need to cut off our noses to spite our faces? I live in District One. Some might argue that I don’t have a dog in this fight. They’re wrong. We’re all Letcher Countians. We all share a common history and mostly have common aspirations. We all believe that our seniors should be served by these centers. But money is drying up, especially when we have a $600,000 annual debt service on the Letcher County Recreation Center, but that’s a different issue, isn’t it? It doesn’t make fiscal sense to have two centers a mere two miles apart from one another when the population doesn’t warrant it. These two centers have about 40 patrons combined, yet some members of the fiscal court will fuss and fight to argue an illogical point, berating their fellow magistrates in the process and just simply standing in the way of progress. It really boggles my mind. And, by the way, I’m very disappointed in District 1 Magistrate Bobby Howard for taking the easy way out and abstaining. Were you just afraid of drawing the ire of Mr. Fleming or do you really not have an opinion either way on the matter? Regardless of which it is, maybe magistrate isn’t the job for you. Just saying.

.

So, it costs about the same to service the debt on the Recreation Center, $600,000, as it does to maintain all our county roads, provide for our senior citizens, and have a sanitation department ($625,000 combined)? Is it just me or does this seem kind of like driving a new Porsche when you live in a single-wide trailer? I know I’m beating a dead horse, but this dead horse is going to stink for a long time to come. Our volunteer fire departments are in desperate need. The Neon ambulance/EMT service is called upon to serve the entire county. We lack vital water and broadband infrastructure. I suppose we can all go ponder these things as we enjoy the walking track inside the rec center. Oh, wait, 25 percent of Letcher Countians are unemployed. Nix that. I don’t mean to sound like such a smartaleck, but this rec center really wasn’t a very good idea.

.

In response to the comment about the 75-year-old hanging out at the fire department, there are several old guys who hang out at the fire department, so you need to be more specific. If you weren’t such a yellow butt you would state your name and the name of the man to whom you are referring. Most people know who you are. Why do you care about the electric bill? You don’t donate one red cent to the fire department.

.

Wow, Texas Governor Rick ‘Oops’ Perry is sending National Guardsmen to protect us from kids who are trying to escape rape, murder, and being forced into drug gangs. Should we cut them in half with machine gun fire or napalm them? This is a Christian nation.

.

You wonder why you are broke all the time and can’t make any money? Look at the way you treat veterans at your post. You are kicking them all out. People are fed up. They don’t want to go somewhere where veterans are mistreated.

.

I am speaking my piece about them wanting to send all of those little Mexican kids to Fort Knox. That isn’t right. People here just lost 200 jobs. They are starving and you want to feed and clothe the Mexican kids. People in Kentucky better wake up and stand up. Rand Paul isn’t any good.

.

This is Regina Carmony. I am the daughter of Pauline Cantrell and the sister of Kenneth Cantrell. My brother died April 25 and somebody had the nerve to break into my dead brother’s house and sit and smoke cigarettes and put them out on the table beside the bed. I think this is pretty ridiculous. I hope they catch whoever did this. I will be in court to see them.

.

This is old Regular Joe. A while back my boy Leroy asked me about prehistoric dinosaurs that he saw in a picture book. I told him that there isn’t such a thing and that fossils were put in the ground by the devil and scientists. The other day when he was going to the work in the mines he asked me where coal comes from. I told him that it is God’s love and to not ask so many dumb questions. My boy Ernest Ray wants a job and he is too young to work in the mines so he put on a camouflage jacket and went to work in Hazard.

.

Did you all know that if you want to work at McDonald’s full time and serve Big Macs, you have to have at least a high school education? If you want to preach and serve the Lord, you don’t have to have any education at all.

.

To all the coal miners: Mitch McConnell is not for the coal miner. He is playing both ends. The Sierra Club and American Gas are two of his biggest supporters. He isn’t for retired miners because you can’t get anything when you retire. He isn’t for veterans. Bills are before Congress to upgrade the veterans’ system, but McConnell always votes against turning the money loose.

.

Is your power bill up? Mine is, big time. What is the justification behind this raise? There is none. Keep voting for people like Steve Beshear and it will continue to go up. We need to march on Washington and the capital of Kentucky and demand that they bring our coal business back. Give us at least hemp as an industry. Marijuana does help for pain management. That is a fact.

.

To certain people: What did you accomplish? Nothing. I just want all of you to treat all veterans with respect. It is their post, not yours. They built it. You didn’t. They earned it. You didn’t.

.

If that crazy lady on Allan Branch doesn’t shut her mouth, I’m going to whip her.

.

To all of you coal miners who are laid off: If you are looking for a good clean job, just get you a Bible and become a paid preacher. Then you will never have to get your hands dirty again.

.

At least the members of our fiscal court should be man enough to fess up to doing Boone Fork seniors wrong. Shame on you.

.

I’m the woman who owns the kitty cat that everybody says Robert Machniak killed. It is not dead; It is alive and well. It was lucky to make it, but I do have it. If anyone doesn’t trust me, just call me and I’ll let them know. They can see the cat. It is fine.

.

Go get that cat killer that was on the front page of The Mountain Eagle. Go get him. I don’t believe that you all would lay a hand on him. Have a meow day.

.

There is more than one way to catch a rat. County Judge Jim Ward and Magistrate Keith Adams, you all are rats. This is concerning the Boone Fork center.

.

Before you start talking about someone’s past just to get even with them, make sure that you can handle the fallout.

.

Where is the horse capital of Letcher County? Drive to Dunham. There are more horse farms here than there are in all of Letcher County.

.

Is there one good thing that Senator McConnell hasn’t tried to block? He hates the new healthcare law and tried to sabotage it. It’s not perfect, but thousands of Kentuckians have healthcare that we couldn’t get before. It’s a godsend. Now, Mitch McConnell is filibustering to keep students paying higher interest on student loans than what the rest of the country pays in interest. Alison Grimes looks better all the time.

.

This goes to the certain someone out there driving around in a gray Camry who thinks that it is alright to go running over livestock: Well, I’m here to tell you that it is not right, and if you don’t quit it I’m going to call the sheriff. You know who you are.

.

Those pickles at Wendy’s don’t do anything for a hamburger or cheeseburger.

.

Hey, liquor store. You have good competition down there near Frazier’s. Lower your prices and you can do better. You are losing business.

.

Does anyone out there want to know how to fix the employment in the United States? If so, I have it figured out. First, get rid of the foreigners, starting with Obama. Then put everyone back in their own states and countries. If Kentuckians look after Kentuckians and Tennesseans look after Tennesseans, then we’ll have enough jobs to go around and quit taking care of the foreigners. If we weren’t overridden with everybody else we would have it made.

(Pause for a moment and think about what Letcher County would be like today if the people living here around 1910 had refused to allow the ‘foreign’ railroad workers and their families and ‘foreign’ coal miners and their families from relocating to the coalfields. Would that have been okay with you?)

.

What is up with people putting down on cigarettes? They don’t want their kids to smoke, but it is okay to put a bar up on every corner and let your kids get out and get drunk. I’m not understanding that at all. Kids nowadays don’t have a place to go. If the police would stop turning their backs on all of this and start doing their jobs, we could get this country back in line.

.

I’m tired of a certain dentist hurting me every time.

.

If you want to give your money away, go to the pawn shop at Whitesburg. They’ll take it and won’t help you with your merchandise.

.

Is there an ample supply of food for the bears?

I hear the government is spending an exorbitant amount of money to send a task force to study the economy in eastern Kentucky. Why not use the good people here and keep the money where it is needed? I also read that Kentucky State Police have been allocated a large amount of money to eradicate marijuana from eastern Kentucky. At the same time, many other states are legalizing marijuana and making jobs and lot of tax money for their states. Why not use that money to help the people on heroin and other illegal medications? I also am hearing the reason it take so long to get help at the Social Service offices is the state is sending workers from one county to another, and causing all the workers to have to work overtime. What’s this about? Maybe if the folks here are allowed to make the decisions for the good of their people we could begin to make a comeback without coal. Central Kentucky is all about the booming early with alcohol. New distillers and breweries are opening, shipping their product to every county, and it has become so glamorized. I have not heard of drunk driving on pot, but if it is in your system it keeps you from getting a job. Do you think maybe the government wants to keep people on welfare to keep control of their lives and keep them dependent on the system? The way the world is going now, more people may need the medical marijuana. What if you could not get the prescribed medication for pain, anxiety, glaucoma, epilepsy and many other problems? If there is an answer, are you maybe being prejudiced in your thinking? Marijuana is a natural plant; alcohol is a destroyer. What would your answer be? Speak out.
