The best thing to happen for Jenkins is all of the different people running for mayor and seats on the city council. It’s obvious that people are tired of the way things have been going and the rubber stamp the council has given the mayor.

.

Representative Hal Rogers hit the nail directly on the head when he pointed out that Alison Lundergan Grimes would be as ‘useless as something on a boar hog’ if the voters are stupid enough to send her to the U.S. Senate as a freshman when our state, nation and region have so many pressing problems. If you ask me, Congress is no place for any woman. Do the names Nancy Pelosi and Michele Bachmann ring a bell?

.

To the man in the white pickup: Does your wife know you are cheating on her? Does she know where you met that other woman Saturday night?

.

Well, it certainly didn’t take long for the father of Alison Lundergan Grimes to get his dirty political hands into her campaign and bring about charges of illegal campaign contributions. You would think the already ethically challenged Jerry Lundergan would know that you can’t rent your daughter’s campaign a fancy bus for half the price other campaigns would have to pay for the same bus. Do we really want to elect a woman to the U.S. Senate who may have violated federal law by taking an illegal contribution for her father’s corporate interest? This bus incident just give us a small glimpse into the unethical character that Alison Lundergan Grimes would bring to the Senate. As they say, the apple never lands too far from the tree — especially in the flatlands of central Kentucky.

.

My Glamorous Blueberry: I remember well how your body used to make me wild, but nothing drove me crazier than your bottom. When I told you I’d follow you anywhere I meant I would go anywhere in life with you, especially if I was walking behind you. Always the perfect place to rest my hands when we danced, I’ll leave the rest for you remember and not share here for the other readers. But I think Mr. Conway Twitty must have been reading my mind when he sang about a ‘Tiger wearin’ Tight Fittin’ Jeans.’ From Sugarsicle

.

Kentucky has a higher percentage of children living in poverty than any of our surrounding states, and the rate has risen over the years. Thank Mitch, Hal, and Rand for that. If we can starve these kids out they won’t grow up to vote Democratic, especially if this trio succeeds in destroying their newfound health insurance. Vote Republican.

.

< b> Hey candidates, want my vote in November? Get Letcher County up to speed with the rest of the state with a broadcastify.com channel. Then we can listen to police and emergency dispatches online and know what’s going on in the community.

.

I would like to send a big shout out to the Sandlick Fire Department for responding so quickly the other night when my neighbor’s house was on fire. They were there within 15 minutes of my call, and within 20 minutes they were inside battling the fire. They saved the house and in the process saved ours. Also, I am very happy with the way the guys handled themselves. I was very impressed. Hopefully we won’t need you again, but I won’t worry if we do because I know you’ll get there fast and get the job done.

.

What has Mitch McConnell ever done for eastern Kentucky? Has he saved all the coal jobs he says he’ll protect? He’s against raising the minimum wage so a full-time worker at Walmart doesn’t have to go on food stamps. He’s against a law that requires that women be paid the same as men for doing the same job. He wants to appeal the affordable healthcare act that has already cut the number of uninsured here in Kentucky to about half in the first year. He wants to cut cost of living raises in Social Security and privatize Medicare to a voucher system. And of course he is anti-union. He has opposed numerous proposals by the administration to rebuild our roads and bridges to put a lot of people back to work. All this while he protects every tax loophole and tax haven for the rich and opposes regulating the Wall Street banks that crashed our economy. All he has done for the last six years is say ‘No.’ So how exactly has he helped ordinary working folks or protected their interests? Ditch Mitch.

.

So let’s talk about cheating husbands and 18-yearold home wreckers. Honey, you are a married man with a daughter and yet rather being with them you are seeing an 18-year-old who, for your information, has a curfew. Talk about contradictions. Do her mommy and daddy know that you are married? If they do, there is no sense in giving their very ‘kind-hearted’ daughter a curfew. If she is seeing a married man there is no need in protecting her virtue. Signed, a concerned and highly ticked off wife.

.

I was just wondering if anybody knows if anyone was hurt badly in that accident last Wednesday morning when that truck slammed into the back of the special needs bus while it was making the mandatory stop buses are suppose to make at railroad crossings? The wreck occurred at the triple tracks at the old Sapphire prep plant Camp Branch. I was on my way to work that morning and I had to take the back road where the old Polly mine was. When I came out the other end at the coal tipple I saw there was an ambulance. Hopefully no one was hurt. Our children are so very precious. I just wish all us drivers out here on the road would pay more attention.

.

I recently discovered a missing person case on Facebook and was wondering if The Mountain Eagle could help spread the word to help bring Robin Abrams home. She has been missing since October 1990. Her family is still looking for her.

.

I attended the Mitch Mc- Connell rally at the Pine Mountain Grill on August 7. McConnell actually looked nervous speaking at the event. I believe he was nervous, because he knew that he had nothing in common with those of us inside the Pine Mountain Grill that day. He never once said what he was going to do for Kentucky in the next six years. He only spoke about himself and bashed Obama regarding coal. Now I am not a huge fan of Obama, but the last time I checked, Obama had been in office for 72 months and McConnell 360 months — or five times longer than Obama. Have we had problems around here for longer than 72 months? Yes. What has McConnell done to improve our region since 1984? If you think we have lost coal jobs under Obama, check how many we have lost since 1984 under McConnell. It’s about five times higher the number of jobs lost under McConnell. The fact of the matter is coal jobs are going away because natural gas is so much cheaper. That’s capitalism 101. McConnell is counting on us being stupid. He is so corporate and so Washington, D.C., he has no idea what average Joe or Mary is living with in Kentucky anymore. Well I am not stupid and I am not a sheep. He has laid out no vision for the future for Appalachia or a jobs plan for Appalachia. All he has to sell is fear. Heck, McConnell even said in Beattyville a few months ago that, ‘economic development is a Frankfort issue. That is not my job.’ Well if Senator McConnell thinks getting and keeping Kentucky jobs is not his job, then it is time to retire him back to his rich little condo in Louisville. I will be voting for the Democrat, Alison Lundergan Grimes as our Senator. My future in these mountains depends on change, not the status quo. No one, even McConnell’s strongest supporters, would ever call him a change agent. He is in the dictionary listed under ‘status quo.’

.

It appears the man in Neon should be given an award for successfully growing the first Letcher County hemp plants — you know, the kinds with no buds like those in the newspaper last week. He could make paper, clothes, hemp oil, etc., but there was nothing there to get high. The picture showed 10-foot plants with not a bud in sight, or our sight anyway. Who would be stupid enough to even consider that what was shown in the paper is marijuana you could smoke? Did a pig eat the buds before the police got there? And people, don’t worry, be happy. The Drug War only costs you $500 per second in taxes. Look that up after you solve the ‘bud mystery.’

Go to Facebook and search for THRILLER DANCE GROUP. If you’re a dancer who’s always wanted to do this number, it’s not too late to join.

.

Citizens of Jenkins, please help me understand why any sensible person would want to support a candidate who is part of the problem. My God people, for the love of our town please wake up. Unlike the last election with the dummy candidate to split the vote, this time around we have a person who has no political or personal ties to that immoral body they call City Hall. And no, it’s not the car salesman.

.

Well, folks, it is now offi- cial. There are six candidates for the office of mayor of Jenkins. What does that tell you about the popularity of the present administration? It is obvious that there are a lot of dissatisfied voters in Jenkins. They are not just looking for ‘change,’ they want a complete purge of City Hall. You can pretty well conclude that three of the candidates are insignifi cant and two who would like to continue business as usual. That leaves only one candidate who is capable of getting our ship back on course.

.

I would like to comment about people who color their hair. The color usually doesn’t match up. I would like to know if anybody out there knows why people do that. You can still see in their face that they are old. Do they think God wants them to do that? Is it a sin to color your hair? Please respond next week.

.

Let me create a scenario for you. Let’s say an office holder, like the mayor of a small city for example, tests the political waters and learns that it is unlikely he could be re-elected. So, he concocts a devious scheme and gets his buddy, like maybe an administrative assistant, to run for the same office. Both of their jobs are in jeopardy so one says to the other, ‘If you win I will reappoint you to your high paying job and if you win you will appoint me to a high paying job, plus you can rehire my wife and father- in- law’. Folks, the coming election could very well be the most important one in the history our fair city. If you have never been involved in politics before it is time to do so. In the words of a popular country music song by Aaron Tippin, ‘You have to stand for something or you will fall for anything.’

.

I would like to thank all the workers at Dairy Queen for being so nice and polite. Also, I want to thank them for finally getting orders right.

.

The Jenkins Homecoming Festival is here again and will probably live up to its reputation for good entertainment, good crowds and good fundraising for local vendors. The fireworks display at the Saturday night finale is a nice way to end a big event. The mayor will probably whip out his checkbook as he has in recent years and write a $5,000 check to an out-of-town/ out-of-state vendor when he could write a $1,500 check to a local vendor for a very nice display. Is the city in such good shape financially that City Hall has to squander our taxpayers’ money on firecrackers? Can the City of Jenkins afford to continue this type of extravagance?

.

Mitch McConnell is a friend of coal operators, not coal miners.

.

I give Sandlick Fire Department two thumbs up. That’s a great team. We had a fire on Little Colley. We called 9-1-1 and within 20 to 25 minutes they already had water on the fire. They got here quick and they did a good job. They are a great bunch of guys. If you see them out needing help, help them all you can because they sure are good at what they do.

.

I am a native of Letcher County and have lived there most of my life. I have worked for different coal mining companies for a total of 23 years. The coal business in eastern Kentucky started going down long before Obama became president. I have never known Mitch McConnell coming to eastern Kentucky to save coal mining jobs or to help bring other industries to that area. Why now? Don’t be fooled by his false promises.

.

To a certain business in the Isom area: You would have more business and more friends if you did not talk about the last ones who left out of your store. You are too nosy and you get into everybody’s business where it doesn’t belong. You are no better than anyone else.

.

I am amazed that some people believe everything that is reported on the Fox News Channel. That network is owned and reported by rich Republicans. Some of their employees are paid more than $1 million a year to bash the president and the Democrat Party. Rush Limbaugh gets paid $5 million for his radio program to do the same thing that Fox News does. If you want more accurate information on world news and politics, try watching MSNBC for one week. Then you decide.

.

Don’t let the world change your smile. Let your smile change the world. Life would be so much better.

.

I would just like to say that I love that song ‘Damn, It Feels Good to be Me.’ Listen, it doesn’t matter if you are poor or rich. It doesn’t matter if you are fat or skinny. It doesn’t matter if you are beautiful or ugly. A person is what he or she is. You don’t need to be something you aren’t. You need to be who you are. Jealousy is very bad because each person is special and unique. It’s great to be yourself.

.

Do you think it is right for a company to lay off an employee who has worked 30 to 35 years for that company just because you have been there 35 years? I don’t think so. Other companies will grab them because they have a lot of knowledge and they are great workers.

.

The Letcher County judge/executive should be ashamed to have his picture in the newspaper with Mitch McConnell.

.

If you listen real close you can hear the helicopter coming over to land in the Cowan Elementary School yard after they put the children in the building. The helicopter picked up at least one person who has been hurt real bad on Little Cowan Road that we have been complaining about for years. It was a head-on crash on Little Cowan. We really want to thank the highway department and anybody else who has anything to do to help keep this road in the mess that it is in. Thank you very much.

.

I am calling on behalf of the families who live on Boot Hill Road in Letcher to thank our magistrate of District Four and the road crew for coming to our aid in the middle of the night on August 9 when our road was blocked. Those people have a good heart. Thank you, Keith Adams and the road crew. God bless.

.

You don’t need to worry about what I reap and what I sow. You are the one who needs to worry about what you reap and what you are going to sow. As far as getting what I deserve, I am fine. You better worry about getting what you deserve.

.

I am so glad that Stevie Joe Litts is running for mayor of Jenkins. This will be so great for our town. He’ll try to get our hospital back and he will try to get these awful taxes reduced. Go, Stevie Joe.

.

You said, ‘Hey, big sexy.’ Who is supposed to know who you are talking about? It sounds like it is somebody you just met and fell in love with. Big sexy, I advise you not to do that. It can’t be me, because I am a little man. Be more specific.

.

I have a straightforward question to ask somebody out there who has logic, sense and an open mind. If you are going to be skeptical and full of crap, keep it to yourself. If you have an open mind and you can really understand or tell me the truth, I want your advice. Is it wrong to chum around with three different men? Can men and women over 35 be buddies to go to a restaurant or go fishing together or is it wrong? Don’t give me a bunch of crap. I want a straight answer. Get rid of them or keep them? Come on, public. Give me a clue.

.

I have a problem and don’t know who to tell it to. When you talk to a psychiatrist they just listen. They don’t give you any advice. None. What if you still almost love a man, but he is with another woman and they have made a small commitment but break up a lot? What if he still won’t leave you alone and constantly comes to check on you? What if he still has feelings for you and doesn’t want you to have any other man?

.

Jim Ward, what did you do, take your picture with Mitch McConnell trying to act big? Well, let me tell you, both of you stink. McConnell hasn’t stood up for coal just like you didn’t stand up for Boone Fork senior citizens. You both are liars and you both stink.

.

Everyone get out and vote for Lena Parsons for Letcher County School Board. Nobody fought harder to keep Beckham Bates Elementary School than Lena. The voters of this district will remember her come this November.

.

If you don’t have the common knowledge to mind your own business and keep your mouth shut, you are a nuisance to yourself and the world.

.

Why didn’t the Letcher County School Resource Offi cer respond when a school staff member was shot at by a kid with a pellet gun? Thank God for Whitesburg Police Department and Chief Tyrone Fields.

.

We keep passing it back and forth about the coal miner losing his job. I was a coal miner for many years. The problem is that we need to put a stop to it ourselves. You can’t stop anything with a vote. You vote for Mitch McConnell; I’ll vote for this one. That doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. We need to get back to ‘We the people’ like George Washington at Valley Forge. We the people need to do something about it. To hell with these politicians. We can and I hope we will. Coal would be booming within a week.

.

Whatever happened to the Bible Trivia that used to be in the newspaper? We really miss it. A group of us got together and enjoyed it every week. Please return it.

(We try to run the feature every week, but occasionally have to leave it — and other features — out for space considerations. Thank you for letting us know you read it and enjoy it.)

.

To a certain dinner theater in Gatlinburg: If you think it is alright to have an Asian Elvis, you have another think coming. I want the American Elvis back or I will not be back to your establishment. You know who you are.

.

I am responding to the person who commented in last week’s Speak Your Piece about the East Letcher Ministry in Neon about what it is doing. Yes, that is true. I have personally seen them do this. I told them that it is not a good thing to do, but they apparently have kept doing it. Unless the law gets involved or unless God comes down and judges them they will keep on doing it, so you might as well get used to it.

.

I would like to say happy birthday to a very special lady whose birthday was August 15. You will always be in my heart.

.

I get The Mountain Eagle through the Pike County Library System. They are happy to give it to me when they are finished with it. However, I am moving to Mud Creek in Floyd County. I will have to subscribe because I don’t think that library carries The Mountain Eagle. Will you please print in Speak Your Piece the subscription rates and where to mail a check? Thank you. Have a nice day.

( The subscription rate to Floyd County is $29.50 per year. You can mail your check to The Mountain Eagle, P.O. Box 808, Whitesburg, Kentucky 41858. And thanks for asking!)

.

To the person who complained about four-wheelers and dirt bikes being a nuisance in their community: Most likely the reason the sheriff will not come out to your neighborhood and arrest traffic violators on four-wheelers and dirt bikes is because it is, evidently, ‘public policy’ for county attorneys not to prosecute traffic violations involving ATVs and recreational vehicles. These types (or classes) of vehicles are drawing too much money from tourists and dealers into the area’s economy and therefore, are not subject to law enforcement for political reasons.

.

The dog walkers on Sycamore Loop, Jeremiah, need to walk their dogs on their own property. Neighbors are getting tired of crap in their yards. Letting them run loose at night barking is not a good idea either. May turn up missing. Respect thy neighbors.

.

The Forgotten One. This is for those of us that has forgotten the love and understanding of our mother. The mother who was always there and took time for you no matter what she was doing or how tired or sick she was, she was there when you needed a helping hand. She was there when everyone else turned away or was just too busy. She was there for richer or poorer. She was there for sickness or health. She was there in the good times and bad times. She was there when you were out late at night. She was there waiting until you were safe at home in the bed. When you were hungry no matter at three in the morning or three in the evening, she was seeing you were fed. She was there. She always had time for you. She was always there when you needed advice or just to talk. She was there. Now that you have grown up and have lives of your own even though she had gotten older, she is there just waiting and watching. Waiting to see if today will be the day you take time out for her. Watching to see if the next car that comes up the road will stop and say, ‘Hello, Mom’, and stay awhile, not in a hurry. Just one or two days a month would not be too much to ask, but she won’t. She just waits. Her time on earth will be gone and all her waiting will over and as you say ‘I wish I had spent more time with Mom,’ or you say, ‘I should have called her more,’ it’s too late because she is not in her rocking chair waiting and watching no more. This is to all the children who neglect their mother. Take a little time for your dear sweet mother after all she did for you before it’s too late. I am sure she is waiting.
