To a certain business in West Whitesburg: I am so disappointed at your lack of respect and professionalism. You don’t even speak to people who walk in there, and the place is so full of smoke that it is ridiculous. There is a smoking ban in this county. As for me and other people I know, we will not be back in there. I hope your business goes under.

.

To Deputy Sheriff Gail Dean Campbell: I am so proud of you for finding that marijuana, but in the photo it looked like you were eating those marijuana plants. This is the old cat killer signing off with a smile.

.

I wish that the owner of the Mayking shopping center would either take out the speed bumps or close the entrance off to the post office.

.

This is from the idiot coal miner someone referred to in the August 22 edition of Speak Your Piece: I may not have your education, but I am smart enough to realize that Mitch McConnell did not have any influence in raising the national debt to 18 trillion dollars or putting 52 million people on food stamps and issuing Social Security to every applicant that can hold a cane. We ‘idiot’ coal miners want to work and have some independence and quality of life rather than complaining while on the draw and badmouthing those trying to put the country back on track. After all, some of us have to work so you can sit on your rear and raise hell about not being given ‘enough.’

.

I am appalled that Todd DePriest was fired for exercising his rights as a citizen. No one in Jenkins is a harder worker or has more knowledge of the workings of our city than Todd. He has been an integral part of the fire department and served unselfishly for many years. He is very knowledgeable of the infrastructure of all of the utilities and kept them running efficiently through the entire G.C. Kincer administration. He has been the ‘go to’ guy while his boss sat in his office. I also find it interesting that Todd and his buddies were at the fire department Saturday washing cars trying to raise money to keep the fire department running efficiently. This says a lot about the character of this individual who was fired because he filed to run for mayor of Jenkins. He still cares about protecting our citizens and our property.

.

It is this simple: A vote for Allison Grimes is a vote for Barack Obama and Harry Reid’s liberal agenda. I am voting for Mitch McConnell. We don’t need the increase in the minimum wage and we don’t need extended unemployment benefits for those too sorry to get out and find a new job. Thankfully, Senator McConnell has vowed to use his position to vote against such nonsense.

.

I was born and reared in the City of Whitesburg, but moved away some 20 years ago and now live in Indiana. Recently I had an occasion to come back home for a visit and as I drove through Whitesburg I was amazed at all the changes that had been made and how beautiful and clean my old hometown was. Keep up the good work.

.

To Gale Dean Campbell: Your crop of marijuana was the least one that’s been shown, but at least there is a reason why it didn’t have buds since the plants had not grown big enough to have any. Your small but honest and moral showing was more direct in detail, as the picture shows. And thank you for not having a narcissistic personality. You are very well liked and respected by the people out here. Keep up the good work.

.

I wonder who is on the ‘Committee to Elect David Narramore Mayor’ since they are not identified. Is this a secret or is he willing to publish the names of all the people on this ‘secret’ committee?

.

This is from a concerned citizen of Letcher County. Why is it that the Letcher Fiscal Court has already denied the younger generation of using the recreation center because there is a charge for everything there? I know money has to be made. The next problem is why is it that the Letcher Fiscal Court is going to charge $25 per night at the Fishpond Lake campground? You can go to Carr Fork on a disability card and stay two nights for $25. Explain.

.

A certain fire chief goes out and swears lies on people and acts like he is better than everybody else when he is not. I think something needs to be done about it.

.

I remember distinctly that when G.C. Kincer was elected he hired Todd De- Priest as his administrative assistant. That was a classy decision considering that DePriest had been his opponent in the mayoral election. In the first city council meeting of his administration Kincer stated that he would take DePriest under his wing for four years then he would be ready to serve as our next mayor. When DePriest filed to run for mayor he was fired the same day. Folks, doesn’t that say a lot about the character and integrity or shall I say lack of integrity of G. C. Kincer?

.

There must be something magical in the papers you file for mayor of the City of Whitesburg because the two filing against the present mayor all of a sudden have become so very friendly. Before they filed, they rarely ever spoke to anyone, but now will talk your head off and come visit you at your home all hours of the day and night.

.

The next time that big, tall skinny girl tries to take pictures on the football field and gets in the way of my kid playing football, I am going to report this to somebody. She has no business selling pictures any way. Please get her off the field.

.

There was no musical talent at the Jenkins festival this year. They had hard rock. Most of the old people left. They need to get a good, country singer in there. Give the people something to enjoy. The music was so loud it could bust eardrums. They sang songs that most people had never heard before. I’d say to the committee that you sure didn’t do too good this year.

.

Jim Ward as done the best job as county judge as any judge Letcher County has ever had. If he could just get the fiscal court to go along with him we would get a lot more done. I think it is a shame when we have the best judge we have ever had and he can’t get any cooperation out of two magistrates. It’s pitiful.

.

Todd DePriest is not mayor material and lacks the skills to be able to go to Frankfort to get things done for Jenkins. Mr. Steve Litts will try to get the taxes off of our citizens and will try to get an ambulance service and a hospital. He is honest, hardworking and trustworthy. Please vote for Stevie Joe. He will be best for us and we need our city to prosper.

.

You would think with all of the revenue that the City of Whitesburg has taken in from the alcohol and payroll taxes that downtown Whitesburg would look a lot better.

.

All that Dr. Narramore has to do to get my vote for mayor is to tell me what he intends to do about this onerous payroll tax instituted by the current mayor and members of the current city council.

.

Mitch McConnell was on TV the other day saying that he is looking for alternatives to energy. What does he think that means? That is against coal. Wake up, you people out there who doesn’t know what he is doing. Wake up before it is too late.

.

Is James Wiley Craft running for mayor again? I haven’t seen him in Whitesburg lately or any indication that he is running for reelection.

.

After 30 years of Mitch McConnell, are you better off today? Let’s ditch Mitch and find another way. Mitch said it wasn’t his job to bring jobs to our state. Let’s ditch Mitch because we don’t have long to wait.

.

I enjoy reading The Mountain Eagle’s Speak Your Piece. First of all, whoever called last week about the council member in Jenkins whose husband is being paid $6,000 a year to manage alcohol sales of one restaurant in town needs to check the records. He is getting paid $600 a month, which amounts to $7,2000 a year. I think this is nepotism and it should be stopped.

.

This is one voter in Jenkins who would think a lot less of Mayor G.C. Kincer if he did not fire Deputy Mayor Todd DePriest for filing to run for election against him. I’m pretty sure that the people I hear criticize Mayor Kincer over this move would not keep Mr. DePriest around if he had done the same thing to them. How in this world do you people expect any mayor or other elected official to keep his top assistant on while he or she is trying beat you in the election? A traitor should never be rewarded.

.

Why do they have Isom Days at the end of the month? About all of the coal miners are laid off and people around here live on checks and they get the checks on the first and third of the month. You all had the rodeo at the end of the month and a lot of people don’t get to go. That isn’t right.

.

First of all, you probably won’t print this. I wonder what is going to happen in Louisville now that the baby got killed and the woman got shot. Are people going to protest that?

.

I think it’s way beyond time we get a conservative Republican in the mayor’s seat to run the City of Whitesburg. Show them what you’ve got, Dr. Narramore. The teachers and hospital staff and workers are for you.

.

Pike County is getting more jobs. How come Letcher County never gets anything? Maybe it’s because Letcher County Judge/Executive Jim Ward has his hands tied up with Isom Days.

.

This is one white man giving his opinion. I don’t understand why that when the media talks about Michael Brown they don’t mention that he was robbing a convenience store. Why don’t they put that on the news? This is supposed to be equal opportunity for everybody.

.

Speak Your Piece, please transcribe this exactly how I am saying it. Letcher County beats all I have ever seen in my life. The fiscal court, the court system and the school system are nothing but a bunch of backward hillbillies who do not know what they are doing. How in the heck is Letcher County suppose to progress? There is no way. I heard a retired teacher who lives just across the road from me say, ‘She said that was the best mess of roasting years she ever got.’ No wonder Letcher County is still in the 19th century. This is the Midnight Phantom.

.

Speak Your Piece, I don’t understand why you give Afro Americans only one minute to tell you what is on their minds, yet you give white people 13 minutes. If you keep this up, I will be over there to protest your discriminatory and prejudicial ways. This is the Midnight Phantom speaking.

.

I tried to tell people that Mitch McConnell is out of contact with people in Kentucky. He hired a campaign advisor who took a payoff by check in another state. Everybody knows that in Kentucky they pay cash so they don’t get caught. He had to go somewhere where they pay by check and then get indicted. That’s just the way it is when you hire outof state people. Mitch Mc- Connell’s campaign staff is from out of state and his money is from out of state.

.

When is Jenkins Headstart going to get enough teachers for all the kids they have? I see they only have assistant teachers in some of the classes with a lot of kids. Isn’t it the law that they have to have enough teachers? Then why don’t they? I will call the state if I see that again when I drop my kids off there.

.

At least 6,600 premature deaths per year would be saved if the EPA new clean air regulations were enacted. So, rather than saying President Obama is waging a war on coal, why don’t the Republicans admit the truth, that they’re waging a war on the environment?

.

I’ve been seeing a lot of B.S. coming from Jenkins about the coming election. I think most of it is coming from one or two people, but there are enough mean spirited and ignorant people in Jenkins that it’s hard to narrow it down. Obviously, the occupational tax really upset a few people, and I think that’s a part of the reason I’m seeing this garbage. As far as Mayor Kincer’s personal life, it’s just that, his personal life. Since G.C. Kincer became mayor, Jenkins has moved forward further and faster than it had in 20 years. I know that Mayor Schubert had his hands full just cleaning up the mess from a previous administration, and a descendant of one of those horrible mayors wants a piece of the action again. Todd DePriest is also a fine and progressive man and if he should be elected, I see no problems with Jenkins moving forward. As for the rest, Joe DePriest, who seems to be someone’s favorite, has been a joke in his position as Letcher County Economic Development Director. He hasn’t created a single job that wouldn’t have come here anyway. The companies that have located at the industrial park have come because Equitable Gas ran their pipeline terminal there, or have located here to serve the natural gas industry when it was booming. All Joe DePriest has done is collect his $50,000 a year salary to ride around and listen to the radio. Considering the industrial park’s location, right on U.S. 23 and square in the center of the population centers of the eastern United States, there should be dozens of companies located there. The other candidates really aren’t worth mentioning, but I will say that Terry Braddock showed how far from reality he flies during his time as a councilman.

.

I guess the teabaggers and their candidate will turn out a couple of dozen crackpots to vote against James Wiley Craft in the Whitesburg mayoral race, and I guess David Narramore will have his followers, too, mostly disgruntled Republicans or Jim Ward supporters. But Whitesburg has come a long way since Craft became mayor and if you think that all the economic problems the city has are his fault, I would say the coming audit will shake a few people up. It might even soil a few reputations. Right now, Whitesburg gets mentioned in ‘Blue Ridge Outdoors’ as a destination for tourism and gets high praise in the New York Times, and Mayor Craft made a lot of that possible. That’s a long way from the articles that appeared in the New York Times and other national and statewide papers 40 years ago when the city turned a blind eye to the firebombing of The Mountain Eagle.

.

I have a question for the opponents of Mayor James Wiley Craft: Which one of you will promise to do away with this sinful alcohol? The first one to say they will outlaw drinking again in Whitesburg will get my vote.

.

It’s becoming pretty obvious that the people in Jenkins and Whitesburg who are crying out against James Wiley Craft and G.C. Kincer are at least slightly delusional and live in a past that never existed. I think they believe it’s still 1968, but it isn’t. The coal industry is dying in eastern Kentucky and Bethlehem Steel isn’t even a corporation any more. I guess they won’t read the many articles in The Mountain Eagle and other newspapers that report on the true reasons for the decline of eastern Kentucky coal, or maybe they just don’t understand them. Sure, coal miners are fine people, but they can’t compete when coal mined in eastern Kentucky costs three times more to mine than it does in Wyoming and twice what it costs even in West Virginia. Face it, coal is over and the people who there is still 200 years of easy-to-reach coal in eastern Kentucky aren’t doing the people any favors by pushing that obvious mistruth. The future will be based on small business, hopefully some of them will be small coalmines, and there are small businesses being created in Whitesburg on a regular basis. Jenkins is finally starting to move forward, too, and could really surge if TECO would loosen the stranglehold it has on the land that surrounds Jenkins.

.

A vote for Dr. David Narramore is a vote for restoring honor and respect to Whitesburg city government.

.

I’m not sure any Senator can do anything to bring back coal jobs. Kentucky has sure lost a lot of coal jobs since Mitch McConnell has been a Senator. But here are some things a Senator can do: If you want to see the minimum wage raised, Mitch McConnell is against it. If you think women should get equal pay for the same work, Mitch McConnell is opposed to that law as well. Mitch supports tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. If you want more people in Kentucky to have health insurance (Kynect and the Affordable Care Act cut the number of uninsured in Kentucky nearly in half the first year), Mitch voted against that as well. Mitch wants to cut benefi ts for Social Security and wants to privatize it. Mitch wants to get rid of Medicare as we know it and give seniors vouchers to purchase private health insurance. Mitch voted against a bill to let students pay the same low interest rate as the Wall Street banks pay. Mitch is against any regulations to protect consumers from credit card practices that rip off customers. In short, Mitch always votes for Wall Street billionaires, the banks that crashed the economy, and the Koch brothers. Why would you vote for Mitch? In 30 years what has he ever done for eastern Kentucky?

.

An internal poll from Crossroads GPS and American Action Network found that women voters believe the Republican Party is ‘intolerant,’ ‘lacking in compassion’ and ‘stuck in the past.’ Good grief, I hope they didn’t spend too much money to learn something everyone with two brain cells to rub together already knew.

.

I don’t understand why David Narramore thinks he can run against James Craft for mayor by citing he has experience being a board member for the housing authority. While he was on the board the housing authority was audited and it was found that it was severely mismanaged, with little to no documentation of where nearly two million dollars in funding spent by a former director went, not to mention the spending that was actually documented was found to be unnecessary. These are facts that can be found on HUD’s website.
