This is ‘ Walking Tall’ John Hall. What is the reason of the Second Amendment? The right to bear arms? What rights do we actually have? I was at home minding my own business around 7 p.m. on December 3 when Neon, Whitesburg and Jenkins police officers pointed flashlights and machine guns at me and demanded I come out of my house with my hands on my head. Then they took my gun off my hip and told me they were going to take me to jail. Then they gave me my gun back and recommended that I get a concealed carry permit. Officers came to my house after someone complained about me being in Walmart with my gun on my hip. I told them my guns are for defense, and if I walk in on a robbery that is the only way I would pull my gun. So what was the point? I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I know the police were doing their jobs, but come on.

(Mr. Hall was a candidate for sheriff in the May primary election.)

.

Incredible. An overloaded coal truck was going so slow on Pine Mountain in the fog that it started sliding backward down the hill. Please, someone who knows the driver clue him in on how incredibly dangerous it is for other drivers when he’s creeping along in conditions of such poor visibility. This is a time to stay home. Why can’t the Kentucky State Police and Kentucky Motor Vehicle Enforcement officers put down their donuts and do something to protect the public?

.

To the person who made the comment about the child not having hunter orange on in the picture of their first deer kill: I’m guessing that the child took the orange off before the picture was taken. A lot of people do this.

.

There are laws in Letcher County for animal control. It seems that people in Seco and Whitaker are not caring very much for their dogs and cats any more so here is the deal. My dog doesn’t leave my property and bother your stuff, so rest assured that I will not tolerate your animals coming into my yard. I once reduced the dog and cat population in Whitaker and have no problems doing so again. This may not go over well with some, but I really don’t care. Keep them home and off my property or you will be wasting your time looking for them.

.

For those of you who want to know, I spent Thanksgiving in the true Christian Pilgrim tradition. I invited all my neighbors over for a huge feast after which I killed them and stole their land.

.

I strongly urge our jailer to check out what one of his deputies is posting on Facebook about the inmates. How is right for a deputy jailer to be on Facebook while at work? The deputy posts things like, ‘If you are a dope head going through drug court and you say it’s hot and I’m freezing, guess what? The heat is staying on! Your comfort is NOT my concern!’ He also makes fun of inmates openly, bragging about putting someone in the restraint chair, among many other inappropriate posts. I understand those inmates are there for a reason, but they do happen to be someone’s family members and deserve to be treated with at least basic human dignity. This is not right.

.

To that certain someone in the fancy 4-Runner: Who do you think you are? Go back to that big city you came from. No one needs you putting on airs around our town. You’re no better than any of us, city boy.

.

The people over here on Camp Branch are going have to get the horses and buggies back out since the road is just too bad for our cars. Back in the summer, the state sure fixed Sandlick up good by blacktopping the road and everything. We sure would appreciate it if you all can fix us up here on Camp Branch, too. Just wait and see how this road is after winter.

.

What’s going on over at Arlie Boggs Elementary School is a shame. We send our children to school to get an education, not to be bullied and pushed around. I think it is a shame how one teacher keeps pointing a student out. I have seen it myself. The child wasn’t doing anything and all you do is yell and scream at him. If I was that boy’s parents, I’d be down there on them. Something’s got to give or take. Why don’t you all stop being bullies just because you are teachers? Learn how to educate. They shouldn’t even save that school, because it’s not worth it.

.

In Britain, where firearms are banned and ordinary cops don’t carry weapons, there wasn’t a single fatal police shooting last year. In the U.S., unoffi cial counts indicate there were probably more than one thousand. But we love our Babbles and guns.

.

To a certain candidate: You put my name in a campaign ad when you ran for mayor and you lost. Don’t try to run for anything else, because I have lots of friends and you won’t win.

.

What happened to the homeless shelter that was supposed to be built? Since the election, I haven’t heard anything else about it.

.

I think it is kind of funny how the City of Fleming- Neon was talking about the demolition of the library and all of a sudden the building just burned down. Was the building insured?

.

I was calling in about the people in Letcher County and the Black Friday sale at Walmart. I didn’t think there was any money in Letcher County, but you should have seen what people bought. Some of them are now trying to get you to give them this and give them that to make up for what they bought their children something. They just bought, bought, bought. I don’t know why it is like this in Letcher County. You’d have to see it with your own eyes to believe it. It was pitiful.

.

To a certain person: I know what you did with my dad and you have the nerve to tell her that you are her friend, you hypocrite. All you want is this house and this land. You better control your son.

.

A man can change his ways. The Lord can do all things. By the way, I will pray for you, Mr. Band Director. God bless you.

.

I’m not the 51-year-old lady who is going to parties and concerts and should get her act together, but if she is 51 she can go and party all she wants to unless you are her momma or something.

.

I’m sick and tired of hearing about the cop who got caught for DUI. I’m the one who said just because you are a cop, you don’t have to quit living. That is true. Everybody should mind their own business and leave the man alone. The man wasn’t in Letcher County. He was off duty. He’s got a life. He has the right to do what he wants to do. Everybody in Whitesburg needs to leave the man alone and quit acting like they own him.

<b>Anyone pulled over who is breaking the law should be taken to jail, whether or not they are current policemen, former judges, mayors, governors, working class people, whatever. Whitesburg Police Chief Tyrone Fields should be treated innocent until and unless he is proven guilty. The Whitesburg police act like they are the law, not that they serving and protecting the law. They put themselves out there in order to arrest certain individuals. I don’t go downtown to hang out with my friends anymore because I am part of the clique that cannot get away with anything because they realize that I don’t have enough money for a lawyer and they can get me. I have been arrested and harassed several times while being at the establishments downtown and not hardly any of the times have there been any justifications.

.

My dog is running loose on Bill Moore Branch. Kill him if you want to, but don’t go to sleep.

.

I would be ashamed if I were a certain woman in Whitco to go to the diaper ministry and take from them. You draw lots of money, drug it all up and then steal for your children. You need to be in rehab.

.

I wonder how Police Chief Tyrone Fields is still out driving after he got a DUI. The mayor shouldn’t be mayor if he is taking up for him. I think he should be punished. They didn’t even put him in jail. If it would have been anyone else, they would be behind bars.

.

There isn’t a crosswalk from the flower shop, barbershop and dentist office on Main Street in Whitesburg to the parking lot located across the street. People just jet across the street and don’t look to see if cars are coming their way before crossing the street. It’s difficult for drivers coming around the corner to see pedestrians. Someone is going to get hurt.

.

To a judge sitting on a certain custody case: You should have dismissed yourself from this case in the beginning. Knowing you are best friends with the mother’s family and went to school with the mother, I’d think the bar would say it is a conflict of interest and question why you didn’t appoint another judge for this certain case.

.

What does James10:14-17 say? Have a merry Christmas.

.

Warning. Danger approaching. I shall play my stereo as loud as it will go and I shall shoot fireworks as if there is no tomorrow during the Christmas season. The sheriff ’s office will not respond to any calls you might make to a cell phone. Bow to the cross and kneel at the wall. I knew I was going to win in court. I knew I was going to prevail and I did. Would you like to challenge me again? Merry Christmas and happy New Year. This is the Midnight Phantom. How does it feel?

.

That is so sad. I feel sorry for you. Bless your heart.

.

Dear Speak Your Piece: Don’t defend a DUI for chief of police unless you are willing to defend everybody who gets picked up for a DUI. After all, aren’t they human also? Yes, I believe so. As a matter of fact, I know so.

(This newspaper has always recognized that everybody is ‘ human’ and therefore prone to make an error in judgment. For that reason, The Mountain Eagle has never in its 107-year history printed singular misdemeanor offenses such as driving under the influence unless the person charged is a public figure, such as the police chief to whom you are referring.)

Looking at the destruction caused by rioting in Ferguson and seeing all was aimed toward the working man. All of the shops that were burned and looted were owned by innocent people. None was owned by any of the thugs on the street. Now I hear the government is going to spend millions of taxpayer dollars to replace the things that were destroyed. I don’t know who was right or who was wrong in the Brown incident, but I know that every person involved in destroying others’ property is guilty of crimes and should pay the cost to replace the destruction they caused, not out of really supporting the Brown family but by their pure ignorance and disregard for anyone other than themselves. The thugs showed no concern for even their own family, children or other community citizens. I would guess to say that most were just street thugs looking for a free gift and used the situation and added fuel to the fire to assist in aiding themselves to do what they had prepared for several days in advance. No matter the grand jury decision, thugs were going to be thugs. Now about the cost: I think the government should put into action a reduction of no less than thirty percent of the welfare and food stamps of everyone in Ferguson. Now hold on. I know some are saying that would not be fair to everyone. Yes it would, because everyone has the opportunity to identify those responsible and if it costs everyone there then you would see riots taking other directions. The first court orders should be to freeze the bank accounts of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. I would guess to say they have collected mega bucks for their part in upholding the rioting. My own opinion of these self-proclaimed leaders is that the only difference between them any other thug is the cost of their clothes.

.

It’s the Christmas season and you are encouraged to shop local. Just because Walmart is in your community, doesn’t mean it is a local store. The people who work there survive on minimum wage with no benefits. Shop at a locally owned store owned by someone in your community. That’s what it is all about.

.

Watch that DUI charge in another county quietly disappear. What an embarrassment to our county as a whole.

.

Parents, if your kid has the flu, keep him or her at home. Don’t bring them to school.

.

My children and I miss seeing the wonderful Christmas window display at a certain business in downtown Whitesburg. We always looked forward to seeing what that clever dentist would come up with for decorations year after year.

.

Your husband works out of town trying to make you a decent living. The little man in the gray truck spends all night every night in your home while your husband is out of town. Everyone knows about you and what is going on with you and the little man. You should be ashamed to show your face in public. You are going to be responsible for a lot of hurt. Your husband will realize what is happening behind his back.

First off I want to thank the Tree of Hope organization for all they do. I went Saturday morning to the toy/clothing giveaway at the church in town. I saw things I thought I would never see in my life, two women and a child were one of the first people to come in, bringing large garbage bags, picking up all the new toys and better clothing. The child had his own bags and picked up all he could carry of the new toys. The workers didn’t see what was going on because so many people were in the room. Bag after bag was carried out to the truck, some unopened that had not been put out yet. When we first came in a worker spoke loudly saying, ‘We don’t want yard sale and flea market people taking the items, it is just to be for the needy and for children for Christmas.’ People around me started taking to each other, apparently they knew the two women taking out bags. They said they went to all the giveaways anywhere they could and sold what they got in flea markets and yard sales. They told the two workers about it, and one woman cried after being told. Before the two women left, one of the workers said to the young boy dragging a large bag that was almost more than he could carry, and asked him if he would like to save some of the toys for the rest of the kids who would be there later. One of the two women came over to the worker looking smug, and told the little boy to take it to the truck. All of the items were going between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. There were a lot of people there, and a lot were helped, but I am embarrassed to know that there are people in Letcher County who don’t care to ruin it for the poor and needy for Christmas. Thanks again to the Tree of Hope for all they did. They really tried to be fair to all of us.
