A tip ‘o the cap to the best basketball team in the country, the Duke Blue Devils, one of the two teams, along with UConn, to win two championships since 2009.

A bunch of us were discussing a few things from Speak Your Piece. One of them was about the school pictures. First off, we don’t really agree with how the editor treated the caller’s comment. It sounds like the caller only wanted to see other pictures. Nothing was said about the man who put them in. We thought maybe the caller was like one of us and couldn’t afford a yearbook or even a Black Kat back then. I, myself, would find a Black Kat on the bus or in a homeroom on the floor where somebody had dropped it. Times were hard back then and still are. We see a few pictures appear twice. It may not be the man’s fault.

.

I know they have a clause that protects the veterans to drink at the American Legion, but why do they have a clause or do they not have a clause to have gambling machines? Why does the law allow them to play gambling machines inside the American Legion in Jenkins?

.

This is concerning Burton Hill at Letcher. We’ve got several vehicles that have been going by here really fast. We all have children over here. Nobody needs to be driving at a high rate of speed with children always playing. People need to slow down and pay attention. There is no sense in people driving 50 miles per hour around here, especially a black truck and white mini van. It’s ridiculous how fast people are driving. People need to slow down or the neighborhood watch will be contacted.

.

I was looking on Facebook at all these people who go to Whitesburg First Baptist Church. How Christian are you people when someone comes with their own jug and asks for a gallon of water and you tell them no? Is that what Jesus would do? This person has been in your church when he was little, yet you couldn’t give him a gallon of water? Think about this the next time you go to church and act like you are such good Christians.

.

To the one who will never vote for another Democratic president again: Maybe you should write a book about what you are not getting for free and then take it and wipe your behind with it. Poor people deserve to be healthy, too.

.

What a beautiful day. I thank God for it.

.

John Calipari can recruit the best players in the world to play for UK, but it’s a miracle if wins the championship with them. Calipari is a good motivator and friend to his players, but he is terrible bench coach, as he proved yet again Saturday night.

.

Why does the stoop of Lemon Drive in Whitesburg look like a garbage dump and a logging road? They pay city taxes and county taxes, too. It’s a mess.

.

Why don’t people stop talking about Brian Damron so much and start talking about the elected officials? They are the ones that are stealing the county blind.

.

People need to sit back and not worry about what other people do. I think John Amburgey is a good constable. He is out working and doing what he is supposed to be doing. That is what we need. Good job, John. Keep it up.

.

I think that county judge has some good people on the garbage run, but I’m getting tired of them not picking it up. The next time he tears my mailbox down, I’m going to sue the county.

.

I noticed in last week’s Mountain Eagle that several young men were indicted for receiving stolen property, but I didn’t see the men that they sold the items to. Why are they not indicted for receiving stolen property?

.

The truth will eventually come out if you have a try with my husband. If you want him, you can have him.

.

I received a letter in the mail along with my Jenkins water bill that states that our water contains high levels of haloacetic acid, which over time can cause cancer. They said there was no need to worry, but now I’m paying an outrageous price for water that not only you can’t drink, but can also kill you. How nice.

.

Somebody had a good comment in Speak Your Piece saying that if you are going to get a job at the federal prison, you better be getting educated. That is the truth. And another thing, the government brings a lot of other people who got laid off from other prisons and puts them to work.

.

I hear that Brian Damron living in Florida in one of our officials’ big vacation home. Aren’t they afraid he would be a flight risk?

.

I read the article in last week’s Mountain Eagle about Jack Cornett, the one who lives on Little Cowan. Jim Ward, what was your problem? You are too busy doing other things instead of taking care of county business. I didn’t vote for you the last time. I won’t vote for you ever again. How many jobs have you had? I can only think of two — one with your family and one with your in-laws. If you run again, I’ll be one of those out there trying to get someone else to run against you.

That $10 fine for twohour parking that is running all of the business off, what businesses are you talking about? You’ve got Summit City and StreetSide and they are mostly open at night so people can go party. There are no businesses in Whitesburg. You’ve got one little furniture company and they have their own parking lot out front. There is no business in Whitesburg. Nobody wants to go in Whitesburg anymore. It’s just lawyers in town and the courthouse. That’s what you’ve got.

.

I heard a lot about the new constable we have and lots of trouble he has been causing. If they had kept the constable they’d had for years, then things would still be the way they were.

.

I’m calling regards to the comment in Speak Your Piece about God. I want to tell the person who called that in that God does answer prayers and He is a miracle worker. I know this for a fact. In 2011, I had a grandson who was born event though he wasn’t supposed to be born. My husband survived and they only gave him six hours to live. God is a miracle worker. It is a miracle every day we get out of the bed. I don’t why people can’t see that and give God all of the credit, instead of giving mankind the credit. God is the one and only judge. One day we are all going to be judged. I wanted to say that God Almighty is the miracle worker because in 2011 I had two great miracles and I thank God every day for that. Thank you.

I want to wish my brother Albert Lee Coomer from Covington a big happy birthday on April 14. From his sis, Jackie Adams.

.

I want to wish a big sweet 16th birthday to my grandsons Michael and Brandon Adams on April 15. From their mamaw, Jackie Adams.

.

I’d like to speak my piece about the City of Jenkins. I didn’t vote for G.C. Kincer or Todd Depriest, because I knew that voting for either one would be a mistake. They both are the same. Todd has the same company that G.C. Kincer had. They let him get by with blacktopping a driveway and the bad check.

.

I want to wish Ashley Mc- Clain a big happy birthday on April 6.

.

From their dad, Emmitt Dwayne Adams, I want to wish a big, happy 16th birthday to Michael and Brandon Adams on April 15. Happy birthday, boys. I love you.

.

I wish Jim Ward and the fiscal court would get off their hind ends and hire a dog warden who will come into neighborhoods and get these dogs that run up and down the roads.

.

In eastern and southeastern Kentucky there is no such thing as pain management. The government has taken away the heart from the doctors. No heart, no doctors.

I am writing this in response to the detractors of our local law enforcement. I find it disturbing that the local population is failing to recognize the hard work and dedication our men and women display on a daily basis. There are certainly several unfortunate incidents that have occurred lately. I do not dispute that fact. However, spreading rumors and fabricating stories benefit none but the criminal element from which we all desire to be protected. Benefitting the criminal element by spreading doubt and uncertainty in the veracity of our law enforcement personnel is unconscionable. Our men and women enforcing the law are not infallible. They are human with emotions and weaknesses. Sometimes poor choices are made. I have to bring attention to the fact that without their efforts we would be mired in a lawless society. Only the strongest would survive. With no one to hunt the least desirable elements in our society no citizen would be safe. Our law enforcement members are policing themselves, identifying problems within and dealing with them accordingly. Before the public sits in judgment of the individual incidents, consider the dedication it takes to accuse someone you consider to be an extension of yourself — the sense of right and wrong and the willingness to enforce it against a member of the team; the strength of character required to call into question the actions of a comrade. The same system that reviews and investigates for prosecution of our least desirable elements is the same system that identified and will investigate and prosecute it’s own comrade. Our law enforcement men and women work impossible hours, sacrificing sleep, leisure, and time with their families to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the public. I pray that the people in our communities recognize their daily sacrifices and dedication. I pray that God protects them all and grants them the wisdom, dedication and fortitude to protect us, the public.

A certified member of the Jenkins Independent Schools instruction staff was seen by another staff member and multiple students making fun of a larger girl in the school. She pointed at the girl after the girl passed and began laughing and talking about how you could see through the shirt and see the girl’s belly button. It was uncalled for and pathetic. I thought a woman in this woman’s professional position was supposed to encourage the students and lift them up, not tear them apart and make fun of them. Instead of taking care of students she is supposed to help from getting bullied, it turns out she is the bully.

This is in response to the reply in Speak Your Piece by USPS spokesman David Walton: Thanks for describing our modern road, Mr. Walton. The only thing you didn’t do was your homework about this road. This mail route was established more than 40 years ago. If you will visit the area you will see that there is ample room for the carrier to turn her vehicle around within 10 feet on either side of the mailbox. Our mail is deliberately taken to the wrong post office so they can reroute the mail through the sorting center. I have a package in transit now that was tracked to be here on the 24th of March 2015, still no package. The package was last handled by the Jeremiah Post Office and rerouted because the carrier took it to the wrong office. The office at Jeremiah is located in a bad location in that to access the location

you have to pull across a lane of traffic. Also, since we are on the topic of mail, the office at Jeremiah has the handicapped sign painted over and you cannot safely get off the road. Neither offi ce has a wheelchair access for handicapped persons. If you want a tour I will personally take you.

I got a good laugh reading about the deluded energy company troll’s fantasies about the ‘philosopher’ Alex Epstein.” Epstein is about as much of a philosopher as Sarah Palin is an intellectual. He got a BA from Duke, which is not as hard as it may seem, and decided to go to the Ayn Rand Institute instead of graduate school. His ‘philosophy’ is to sell the services of his one-man think tank to the energy industry for as much as he can squeeze out of them. Nothing he has written is based in reality, any more than the rest of the energy troll’s rant. Friends of Coal and Coal Miming is Our Future are politically directed organizations that have gotten fat by telling frightened people that coal mining is alive and healthy if only Obama and the EPA could get off their backs. Any coal miners who see this should read the coal mining productivity article on the front page of the April 1 issue of The Mountain Eagle. Too bad wasn’t April Fool. Coal was mined underground in Central Appalachia at the rate of 1.37 tons per man-hour in 2014 and strip mines produced it at 3.23 tons per man-hour, for a combined total of 2.37 tons per man-hour. Western Kentucky mines produced coal at a combined rate of 4.21 tons per man-hour and in Wyoming it’s 21.82 tons per man hour, with strip mine production peaking at 30.16 tons. It’s not the EPA and Obama that have made Central Appalachian coal a national afterthought, it’s the market, and the big mining companies that robbed the coal here from the people without doing anything for the region other than leaving a post-industrial wasteland. That’s right, Mr. Troll, the free market that you and your libertarian friends are so much in love with did this. Get real for a change. Any coal that was easy to mine in Central Appalachia was mined before 1990. All Obama is doing is enforcing laws passed by Congress in the early Eighties. In other words, he’s doing his job.

. L.K. You make me laugh. Hard. Out Loud. Often. To the point that I sometimes cry.

Last week someone commented in Speak Your Piece, suggesting another book by a climate-change denier. It’s clear from the commenter’s position that he gets all his news and opinions from Fox News. In reading the book and reviews, I felt more like the author was pushing shale oil development, not coal. In other words, now that the coal industry has polluted our surface water, let’s turn the environment over to an industry that wants to inject poisons into our underground water supply. The person who wrote the Speak Your Piece comment said Congress should defund the EPA. So he wants to eliminate restrictions that protect our air, our water, and our land? If he wants to live where the energy industry is allowed to operate with minimal restrictions, he should investigate China, where McConnell and his friends have sent thousands of good American jobs to avoid paying a decent wage and complying with protective regulations. But before he considers moving to China, he should look at the photos of China’s city dwellers who have to wear facemasks in order to breathe. If there is any real moral point to the book he suggests, it is this: We should say thanks to the fossil fuels which have helped us build an industrial nation, but replace them now that we have safer, more environmentally friendly alternatives.

.

Thank God we have a President who negotiates for peace rather than starting wars. We had enough death and destruction during the previous administration.

.

I am so glad to see Biblical scriptures posted at Letcher County Central High School. We need to make sure that Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and other non-Christians, especially our exchange students, know that they are not welcome here because they are third class people.
