Can anyone explain to me why I can’t find a single can of Diet Mountain Dew in Whitesburg? I was told it was due to an aluminum shortage, yet all other sodas seem to be in abundant supply. What is going on? I need my Diet Dew fix, people.

.

The inmates are now officially running the asylum when it comes to fourwheelers and side-by-sides and the other ATV’s that are out on our county and state roads. I have actually seen police cruisers — both county and state — completely ignore these unlicensed vehicles that are out slowing down traffic and creating danger for those of us who actually pay license fees to drive on our roads. I have seen the police here in Letcher County ignore four-wheelers that are being driven on highways 119 and 15 and other roads by kids who are obviously younger than 12. How is this being allowed to happen?

.

I would like to give a shout out to the tourism committee for making a nice walking trail for the people of Letcher County. The Tanglewood Trail is a nice walk and I’m anxious to see the results when the addition is complete. Does anyone know when it will be done?

.

What happened to Kevin and LKD at the Bulldog? We want them back.

.

After reading this story about our county government approving this road rally across Little Shepherd Trail, I am left wondering why our fiscal court — no matter who the county judge and magistrates are — always approves any suggestion that’s brought up just because it’s in the name of tourism or school sports or naming bridges or whatever. This road rally may be the greatest thing ever, but shouldn’t Judge Adams and the magistrates first ask the Pine Mountain Wildlife Management people whether it’s okay to hold a road race across that protected area? I mean, would it hurt to delay such a decision for a couple of weeks until it can be determined whether something like this is a really good idea or not? Who knows — it could be the best thing ever or it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

.

I have a question for all of you Trump and Mitch supporters. What happened to the prison we were supposed to get that would have injected desperately needed funds to this area by way of increased housing needs for the employees, increased numbers in the schools from said employees, and the increased revenue through buying gas, groceries, etc.? Since Mitch is the second most powerful person in Washington and you all think he does so much for you, then why hasn’t he given the go ahead for the prison? You know he has the power to do so. What has Mitch done for you in the past 36 years? Name me one thing. You vote for him because you like the idea of having someone from our great state in the number two spot. Why do you think the next six years would be any different?

.

So you think COVID-19 is a hoax? Then why don’t you Google the name Thomas Macias, the California truck driver who refused to wear a mask and then died of the coronavirus.

.

I’m so glad my children are grown and I don’t have to worry about them being exposed to COVID-19 when school goes back in session. Any parent knows children — especially the younger ones — are a cesspool of germs. They wipe their noses on their shirtsleeves, sneeze openly without covering their mouths, and wipe boogers on their shirtsleeves and anything else handy. I pray for the teachers and staff who are worried about their safety. Not to mention school bus drivers who are forced to be in an enclosed environment while taking kids to and from school each day. I’ve seen suggestions about pushing start dates for the 2020-21 school year to Labor Day to see if we can get our COVID numbers to go down. What would waiting a while hurt?

.

Trump’s campaign manager is a felon. His deputy campaign manager is a felon. His national security advisor is a felon. His foreign policy advisor is a felon. His personal lawyer is a felon. His longtime advisor is a felon. It’s not a campaign, it’s a criminal enterprise.

.

Thank you, Whitesburg Walmart, for having a person standing outside to make sure all the customers have a mask on. It’s frustrating when you go into a store and people aren’t social distancing — look in front of the courthouse on ‘court days’ and see everyone sitting, standing in close proximity to one another. It’s no wonder COVID-19 is on the upswing here in Kentucky.

.

It is an absolute crime that Hillary Clinton had to testify 11 hours for the deaths of four Americans and was never charged with any wrongdoing, but our Cheeto president hasn’t had to testify one minute for the deaths of more than 132,000.

.

Today’s generation has gotten entirely too used to our cellphones. I no longer need to memorize anyone’s phone number because all I have to do is click on a person’s name and the number is automatically dialed. This lack of memory use can’t be good for us years down the road.

.

To a certain trio of podcasters: I came down to Whitesburg before COVID to work on my writing in a place where I would be a stranger to everyone. I also wanted to see the town you refer to so often. I had a great time and met a lot of good people, but I didn’t try to contact you because I didn’t want to be creepy. Sorry to have missed SP at the Sweet Thing Jamboree — not a single hotel room was available in Irvine and when they hadn’t come onstage by 9 p.m. I had to drive back to Whitesburg. Keep doing the good work on the deeply, deeply diseased. With admiration from Canada.

.

All the news of bankruptcies and mass layoffs makes me wish we had a president who had taken national action against the pandemic from the start. One who cares about jobs and the economy.

.

The 1918 flu pandemic killed 675,000 Americans. The current administration will probably not get to 300,000 by Election Day, but they can certainly beat the record set by the flu if the President is re-elected. This would be MAGA.

.

Another week, another load of idiot talk from Donald ‘Traitor’ Trump’s sycophantic supporters. They have nothing but slanderous lies and racist screeds to support their ideology, because they have no ideology left other than hatred for anyone that varies from themselves in the slightest degree. They will turn on their own beloved heroes in an instant, should that hero diverge from the Republican Party Platform by so much as one single splinter. Feral rats will attack and devour one of their own immediately if it is caught in a trap; Republicans remind me of nothing so much as these feral rats. The once-vaunted ‘Party of Lincoln’ is now home to Nazis, Klanners, Aryan Nation, Neo-Confederates, White Identitarians, antigovernment militia trash, and every white supremacist and home-grown terrorist organization known to man. Americans need to resign themselves to the fact that the former Grand Old Party is dead and rotten, and beyond saving. Burn it to ashes, bury the ashes in the deepest lime pit we can find, and cauterize the earth where it stood.

.

We are all for tourism in our county. However, I can’t imagine I am the only one who has concerns about this rally race and the disturbance it might cause to our wildlife. I can’t imagine that all the deer, bears and wild turkeys will benefit from all the ruckus on the mountain. I feel like we are invading their home — their space — with a lot of noise.

.

Given how good the meals are from CANE Kitchen there in Whitesburg, it wouldn’t surprise me if some of the prisoners in the Letcher County Jail will want to stay locked up just to get that great food they are going to be getting when the CANE Kitchen starts feeding them.

.

If you’re one of those people who are dumb enough to believe President Trump and his lying assistants over Dr. Fauci and other experts when it comes to the coronavirus then I worry about you. After all, it was just verified by the fact checkers that Trump has now told more than 20,000 significant lies since he became president three and one-half years ago. And he is supposedly a man of God?

.

A huge shout-out to the volunteers who take care of the beautiful baskets of flowers hanging from the light poles in downtown Whitesburg. That takes much time and effort and they deserve an extra thanks for doing the work in this hot and humid time of year.

.

A 37-year-old veteran with no underlying health issues died on the Fourth of July of COVID-19. This man survived two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, a total of nine years of military service. In April, he posted ‘Let’s make this clear. I’m not buying a mask. I’ve made it this far by not buying into that damn hype.’ Two months later, he was dead. All because he didn’t wear a mask.

.

I’m sure COVID-19 is behind a lot of delays of projects for Letcher County. I seem to recall that they were planning a bike trail and haven’t really heard anything about that lately. I see a lot of bicyclists in Whitesburg and know that a trail would be a valuable asset to our community.

.

Why do they have sign language interpreters on every news brief in the country, especially COVID 19 updates? Anyone watching at home can use closed captioning. I’m not trying to be mean to those who are hearing impaired. I understand that those who can’t hear need a way to get important information. But is it really necessary to have that little side box with a sign language interpreter every single time?

.

Whatever happened to the roadwork planned for U.S. 119? I had surveyors come look at my land almost two years ago, telling me that they would have to make adjustments to my property during construction and I haven’t heard a word since then.

.

To Speak Your Piece: I got tickled when I found out old Biden is running for president. That’s a joke. He is like I am; an old fart that sleeps most of the year. Well the Dems are looking forward to four more years with Trump. He is all they have to keep them from getting bored. Take care, friends.

.

Happy late birthday to Isom Fields who lives in Morristown, Tenn., who turned 80 and is still not old enough to sleep by himself. I do, but I’d rather not, at least all the time. Thank you, Mr. Stanley Pack.

.

To the good people in the Appalachian Mountain area: A vote for Mitch Mc- Connell and Donald Trump this November 3 means three things — you are willing to follow them down a rat hole, jump over a cliff for them or drink their poisoned Kool-Aid. Which are you willing to do? There’s an old saying, ‘The devil takes care of his own.’ This means he has a spot waiting on Donald Trump to keep the fires in hell burning. Donald Trump will be using a goldplated shovel.

.

I need someone with a saw to clean up downed tree. 606-634-0186 Serious calls only.

.

Don’t tell me to wear a mask. What do I care if COVID 19 sickens my grandparents, my parents, my wife and my children as long as I don’t have to cover my lips and nose?

.

I complained all winter about cold weather and now I’m complaining about the heat. I just wish we had had spring and that we will have autumn.

.

Stop driving around honking your horn in the middle of the night. No one wants to hear that. Even if you don’t want to get a good night’s sleep everyone else does.

.

To grocery store bag boys: Haven’t you ever eaten a banana? Stop throwing heavy things on top of bananas that you’ve put in the bottom of a bag. Use some sense.

.

What’s going to happen without UK and high school football? It’s going to be a long fall with no football. And then we’ll have to face no basketball. Signed, Bored

.

I came down the old high school hill this morning, again, and almost pulled out in front of someone who then gave me the stinky eye. If I ever get hit I will sue whoever is parked in front of the old Bella’s building. If you must park there, parallel park. It’s impossible to see oncoming traffic from your right when you’re coming off of that hill. Adjust, please.

.

You young mothers and fathers should get off of your cell phones and pay a little attention to your children. That’s why they’re acting up, you know. Even negative attention is better than none at all. The years will pass quickly, believe me I know, so pay attention.

.

You shoot one more dog in this neighborhood, and I’m calling the law. It’s illegal to shoot a helpless animal, and you’re just cruel. You had better thank the Lord that you haven’t taken a bead on my dog or cat, or you’d be wearing a black eye or two. Stop it now or else.

.

Well isn’t it nice that you got your stimulus money? All these new buildings going up and additions added to houses. Nice, isn’t it? Also nice is that you’re going every week to get your free food for your children. That food is not free, it’s money taken out of my paycheck. People will never go back to work with that kind of money they’re getting for staying home.

.

This is the United States of America, and I have rights. Don’t even dare to tell me that I must wear a mask in public. I am my own boss, and I’ll do what I want in my free country, thank you very much.

.

If you’re too sorry to go pick up free food for your kids, then you shouldn’t get it at all. Sending Granny or Papaw after the food is the height of pure sorriness and you make me sick.

.

Webb Avenue is a oneway street, people. Pay attention. Coming down from the bank’s hill on Back Street and making a left-hand turn is illegal. I don’t care where you’re going, follow traffic laws. I almost got hit a few weeks ago by someone coming the wrong way, and I almost wish he would have hit my car. I would have sued him until he wouldn’t see daylight for a month.

.

I don’t know how people think they’re an exception to wearing a mask in public. I don’t want your germs all over me to take home to my children and husband. If you can’t manage to wear a mask, and yes, they ‘smother’ everybody else too, then keep your butt at home.

.

If you live in the United States, then Donald Trump is your president, like it or not. I don’t like him, but I have respect for the office of the presidency, and so should you. This is the best country in the history of the world, and while not perfect, it’s still the best. Stop trying to destroy it with division and violence from within. A house divided cannot stand, and then what? What will you do and where will you go then? Work to make it better if you’re not happy; don’t try to destroy it.

.

I don’t know why people are saying the coronavirus is keeping them in with nothing to do in Letcher County. There never has been anything to do in Letcher County.

.

I’ve been trying to figure out exactly what it is that makes us ‘who we are’ — the conscious being we label as ‘ourselves.’ Are we a physical body ruled by a highly sophisticated brain? Or are we a physical body with a ‘soul’ attached? When we say we’re feeling sad, angry, happy, etc, exactly where do those emotions originate? In our brain, in our ‘soul’, or in our body? Why do we even have emotions that come upon us at random times, seemingly beyond our control? In trying to answer these questions, here’s what I’ve come up with. We are a physical body whose entire lifetime goal is physical survival. We don’t ‘have’ a body, we ‘are’ a body. Every aspect of our body is designed for its continued survival. Reproduction is the body’s way of trying to survive beyond its physical death by producing offspring. The brain is a highly evolved message center to process whatever the body signals it needs to stay alive. When we feel hungry, for instance, it is our body’s need for nutrition that signals our brain to create a feeling we call ‘hunger.’ Then our brain’s job is to figure out where and how to obtain food. What we experience as our Conscious Self is a Matrixlike illusion that’s sole job is to do the brain’s bidding. Our Self is created by the brain for the sole purpose of ensuring the continued survival of the body. And our emotions are also created by our body, again for the purpose of signaling some threat to the physical body. In my view, the concept of the ‘Soul’ living on after bodily death is the brain’s created illusion — its way of denying the reality that our bodies will cease to exist at some point. ‘Heaven’ and ‘Hell’ are also useful concepts that obscure the fact that physical death will be ‘The End’ of ‘who we are.’ Similarly, the ideas of being resurrected from death and the Eastern concept of reincarnation provide the illusion that ‘who we are’ will somehow live on beyond our ultimate fear, the physical body’s death. Think about it.
