State Route 7, north and south, is a disaster for us to have to travel on. And when they come patching the holes they remind me of a hit-and-miss engine — sometimes they hit and sometimes they don’t. Nevertheless, our road is pitiful.

.

A boy came up here and dug up a bunch of ginseng right next to a boat I have. I figure he knows he was on private property, but I just want him to know I have pictures of him digging my ginseng on a trail camera. He can come and apologize to me or I will take it a little bit farther. Thank you.

.

When our present governor was attorney general he sued former Governor Matt Bevin for just about anything, but now he’s crying just because he gets sued.

.

More U. S. coal-fired power plants were shut in President Donald Trump’s first two years than were retired in the whole of Barack Obama’s first term. Do any of you out-of-work coal miners who voted for Trump realize he played you for suckers?

.

I was coming down U.S. 119 and came upon an accident scene today. A Kentucky State Police trooper was there on one side of the road — looking nice, clean cut, and professional. A city cop was on the left — well, I assume it was a city cop, but it could have been Willie from Duck Dynasty. It’s getting bad when the cops look worse than the criminals do. Come on, man, straighten your act up.

.

How far has the United States of America fallen since Donald J. Trump was elected president? It has gotten so bad that even ultra conservative columnist George Will just wrote this: ‘Under the most frivolous person ever to hold any great nation’s highest office, this nation is in a downward spiral. This spiral has not reached its nadir, but at least it has reached a point where worse is helpful, and worse can be confidently expected. The nation’s floundering government is now administered by a gangster regime. … This nation built the Empire State Building, groundbreaking to official opening, in 410 days during the Depression, and the Pentagon in 16 months during wartime. Today’s less serious nation is unable to competently combat a pandemic, or even reliably conduct elections. This is what national decline looks like.

.

Well look who is going to go out and buy a surveyor and a lawyer to try to prove my land doesn’t belong to me.

.

To a certain idiot who claims a certain person curses at them while they are mowing grass: How can you hear anything when the lawnmower you are on is running? You’re an idiot. You always have lied and you always will lie.

.

The only reason the coal mines haven’t started back in operation in eastern Kentucky is because ‘Cocaine Mitch’ McConnell doesn’t care about the coal miners. He lied to every one of us. He claimed that he cared about us, but he really never did. Mitch McConnell doesn’t care about poor people; all he cares about is getting voted back into office. That’s why I won’t vote for him again. I am going to vote for Amy McGrath.

.

To all you ginseng diggers out there: There is all kinds of ginseng on Bill Moore Branch. Yes, that’s right. And there are copperheads on Bill Moore Branch, too, so don’t take your children ginseng digging with you. But I want you to know that when you do come I welcome you — bring it on. But the number for you to call is 9-1-1.

.

I would like to leave a message for a very attractive young lady from Blackey about our night of playing cards. We had the best night of playing cards that I can ever remember. I’ll wait until next Wednesday to see if you respond. If you do, maybe we can work out and time and place.

.

I hope the members of the grand jury — when the evidence is presented to them — have enough sense to do the right thing when it comes to that man getting killed.

.

I hear a rumor that there’s a little bit of hanky-panky going on in the courthouse. It’s a hush-hush operation from the sound of it.

.

My wife left me for a Freewill Baptist preacher; said she wanted a good Christian man. Well both of them are now dead and gone. Jesus, if that’s all you’ve got against them turn them loose. And be kind, always.

.

‘This is the United States of America, and I have rights.’ Other people have rights, too, you Trump-sucking trash. Your rights end where my life begins; get in the way and you’ll wish you had used some common sense and consideration. Oh, and I’ll dare to tell you anything I please and you’ll take it, little man.

.

The people of Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington elected their so-called leaders. Probably, they will be re-elected the next time they run for office.

.

The Mayking Dollar Store’s sign saying that all customers are required to wear a mask is pretty useless. Two skanks came in without masks last Monday and one giggled and told the cashier, who was wearing a mask, ‘I guess I should have worn mine.’ This is why we can’t have anything.

.

So sorry the festival had to be cancelled. Yet another reason I wish we had a real president rather than a fake reality TV show huckster.

.

The White House press secretary on Trump’s push to reopen schools: ‘The science should not stand in the way of this.’

.

To the person who said he or she refuses to wear a mask because ‘I have rights, it’s a free country, and I am my own boss’. I have a few suggestions for you: You really don’t have to wear clothes in public, because nobody can tell you not to. It’s a free country, remember? You can freely cheat on your spouse, because moral rules don’t apply to you, right? You have no reason to attend a religious service because no preacher can tell you how to live. The Ten Commandments can be ignored by you, because even God can’t dictate rules for you to follow. As you said, it’s a free country. We can assume you refuse to stop at stop signs and feel free to ignore speed limits, because the rules of the road don’t apply to you. You are your own boss, remember? When in stores, you can freely shoplift whatever items you want, because nobody can require you to pay. Prices don’t apply to you. When you are out in public and need to relieve yourself, just go wherever you want, since nobody can ‘make’ you do your business in a restroom. You’re your own boss, remember? So folks, the next time you hear a person say they refuse to wear a mask in public, ask them if they also refuse to obey the various rules mentioned in this comment. Remind them that there are other people besides them in this world. Are they so self-centered that society’s rules don’t apply to them at all?

.

Three things are on my mind: One, Black Lives Matter — all lives matter. Get over it. Two, politics are getting out of hand. Three, there will be some newspeople and reporters coming into Letcher County to check and see all that is going on with the courthouse and the officers and charges that have been made but people don’t know about. There is also a little incident that happened in the Ermine shopping center involving a gun and the officers not doing their job or anything else. Let’s see how that pans out.

.

Well, I guess all you Speak Your Piece readers know that Vladimir Putin is a Kentucky Colonel.

.

I see the police have become the mask police up at Walmart. This mandate from the governor is unconstitutional and he will be voted out. But you cops, knowing that everybody hates you so much, ought to be keeping the patriots on your side. But instead you’re up there being the mask police. Jesus is coming and this place is getting ready to get wrecked — the wheat and the tares.

.

Hey, Ben Gish, you don’t like people telling the truth in Speak Your Piece about some of your friends. But guess what? The truth will come out about them. Take up for them all you want to, Mr. Gish, but like the old saying goes, what comes around goes around. When you start sticking up for liars and no-good lying supposed-to-be churchgoers who go around doing bad things to people in life, it’s going to come back to you. And you know something? There is no law against freedom of speech, because it’s a free country. You have already been reported to somebody who knows about what goes on with the media in Letcher County.

(Ben Gish said to tell you that yes, there most certainly are laws regulating freedom of speech when your words harm others. He also said to tell you that unlike Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites, the newspaper he edits would be sued out of existence if he printed even one or two of the libelous and slanderous comments you continue to phone in to Speak Your Piece about your neighbors, your family members, and certain county officials.)

.

Ladies and gentlemen, I would advise you to beware before doing business with Ferrellgas. They are raising prices and they don’t treat their customers like customers should be treated. There are other means of heating your household or business. There are other gas companies that do a better job. I stopped buying from Ferrellgas two years ago. I now use a company out of Hazard which does me right and treats me fairly.

.

It breaks my heart to read some stories. I don’t believe this man would have hurt anything. He was homeless and probably hungry. I would hate to be the people who ran him off for panhandling. Nobody wanted him, but he was once some mother’s darling, some mother’s son. Once he was fair and once he was young.

.

A road rally race on Little Shepherd Trail is maybe the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my life. This is just a disaster waiting to happen.

.

When Governor Beshear starts his briefings on COVID 19 he always says every life matters. That doesn’t include the unborn life. The first month he was in office he licensed the opening of an abortion clinic that was closed by the former administration. He prides himself on being a deacon and serving communion in the church he belongs to and was raised in. Even Joe Biden is not allowed to take communion in his church because he supports a woman’s right to choose. I could not call myself a follower of Christ and vote for someone who promotes abortion.

.

God bless you, Mr. President. Why don’t they take they children’s summer vacation and turn it around to winter vacation and let them go to school through the summer? Does it seem logical there won’t be as many germs or viruses in the winter? I might be off my chain here a little bit, but it sounds logical to me. God bless America and thank you for what you are doing for America, Mr. President. And the media does not print the truth. We know that. You’ll be our president again, Mr. President. I wish it were for the next 12 years. Then we might get this nation straightened out. If people vote the other way we will be a Third World country. God bless America.

.

I need some information, please. On Highway 15 to Hazard, there is a giant anvil sitting beside the road at Redfox. I just wonder what that is for and why it is there and who put it there. That is all.

(We are trying our best to find an answer for you, but we had little luck before we had to go to press. ‘That is a good question,’ said a woman who answered in the office of Knott County Judge/ Executive Jeff Dobson. The woman said Dobson would call us back if he knows anything more about it. As our press deadline neared, we had not yet gotten a reply from the judge so we called our friends at the Troublesome Creek Times newspaper in Hindman. They, too, have seen the sculpture but don’t know who placed it beside KY 15 there or why. They have been told it is a tribute to a blacksmith shop that used to be at Redfox many years ago, but noted there is no plaque or marker at the site explaining what the anvil is all about.)

.

I’m 60 years old and live in Jenkins. The mayor said that as long as we wear masks, like everyone has been, we can beat this virus. As I was coming out of the Double Kwik, five or six city employees came in with no masks on. So, Mayor Depriest, don’t be like Trump. He says do as I say, not as I do. Wear a mask.

.

I put two things in Speak Your Piece, but they didn’t get put in there so there’s no use in calling. Thank you.

(Did you miss the note in last week’s edition explaining that most of the comments that were phoned into Speak Your Piece for that week went unrecorded?)

.

I would like to speak my piece about ARH giving raises to nonunion people and not recognizing the frontline workers who take care of the patients. The LPNs, the RNs and the respiratory care people are the ones taking care of the patients.

Dear Mountain Eagle’s Speak Your Piece: We get it; your paper, your column. The First Amendment gives you the right to print or not to print or to edit as you please … (Obviously, you did not take the time to read the note at the top of last week’s Speak Your Piece explaining why most of the comments submitted by telephone for that edition could not printed. Had you read that explanation, wouldn’t you have simply repeated your comment from last week for inclusion in this week’s edition?)

.

I believe New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio can have that city in the same situation Chicago is in now and has been for the past 10 or 12 years. I think he can have New York in that shape in half the time it took Chicago. He can get the killings in New York up to two- to three hundred a day. And the thing is, they will reelect him for doing it. Thank you.

.

When it comes to Black Lives Matter, Leo Terrell speaks for me. Thank you.

.

To the people who voted Jamie Hatton in as Letcher County Attorney: I believe you wasted your vote, because he will not do anything for the people. He’s got an arrogant attitude and he won’t let anybody talk to him.

.

To the person who commented about another week and another ‘load of idiot talk from Donald ‘Traitor’ Trump’s supporters’: He or she talks about a lot of bull, but when you look over it it’s nonsense. They have a right to speak their piece, but I want to ask that person how stupid pills he or she has had. Does Donald Trump send it to you every month? I guess he sends them to all the Republicans out there who voted for the fool. Try not taking the stupid pills for a while. Thank you.

.

Trump has lied about this virus since Day One. He had no idea about what to do or where to even start about it. The only good idea he had was to turn it over to the governors of each state. Of course, the governors of Florida, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Tennessee never listened to the health experts. You can see how well they are doing now with all their hot spots. They listened to Trump in May when he told them to open up because the virus was just about gone, but it was just more lies as usual. All Trump wants to do is campaign.

.

To the parents who have lost their babies and children through death: I believe that our heavenly Father thinks these babies and children are more precious and deserve to be raised in an environment better than what we are raised in. I believe that your babies and children will come for the morning of the Resurrection. I believe that if you parents will keep the Lord’s commandments that you will still hold your babies and children in your arms and raise them in a more pure environment. Romans 8:38, 39.

I don’t know who’s responsible for Neon’s Wastewater Treatment Plant be- tween Neon and Seco, but oh my God! For the last two weeks I’ve noticed the horrible smell that’s become so strong it’s turned into a taste! I don’t know if they have laid off workers or what, but it’s never been this bad, and I feel sorry for the people who live near that place. I have to pass by the place twice a day to get to work and back, and it’s as bad as the Whitesburg Post Office’s parking lot’s smell. People, whoever is responsible for maintenance is going to have to do better.
