The Whitesburg Middle School speech team is the regional winner of the Kentucky High School Speech League junior division.
The competition was held Feb. 11 at Knott County Central High School. WMS is a part of the Appalachian Region, which consists of 17 counties. This is the fourth year WMS has competed in the regional competition. The speech team placed sixth the first year competing, second the second year and first the last two years.
Regional champions are Bayley Amburgey, public speaking, and Sarah Halcomb, extemporaneous speaking.
Regional runners-up are Bayley Amburgey and Cruz Adams in improvisational duo; Ashley Benton in declamation; Lorie Sturgill and Sarah Halcomb, duo acting; and Tori Ison, poetry.
Regional runners- up and champions received medals.
WMS will participate in the state speech tournament at the University of Kentucky in Lexington on March 30 and March 31.
WMS has competitors advancing to state level of competition in each of the 11 categories. A competitor advances to the state level if he or she is in the top seven in the region in the category for which he or she is competing.
Those advancing to state are: Dalton McCown and Hawk Vance, broadcast announcing; Ashley Benton and Lauren Noble, declamation; Cruz Adams/Ashley Benton and Lorie Sturgill/Sarah Halcomb, duo acting; Sarah Halcomb and Dalton McCown, extemporaneous speaking; Hawk Vance/ Aaron Thomas and Cruz Adams/ Bayley Amburgey, improvisational duo; Grace Burke and Tori Ison, interpretation of literature; Tori Ison, Delilah Fleming and Dalton McCown, poetry; Grace Burke, Aaron Thomas and Casey Sturgill, prose; Bayley Amburgey and Sarah Halcomb, public speaking; Ashley Benton, solo acting; and Vance Hawk and Lauren Noble, storytelling.
