Storytelling will focus on massacre at Pound Gap, hanging of ‘Doc’ Taylor

An old-fashioned storytelling will take place at 6 p.m., Saturday, October 27, at the Killing Rock near the Pound Gap of Pine Mountain between Jenkins and Pound. The story is based on the massacre of the family of moonshiner Ira Mullins by Dr. Marshall “Doc” Benton Taylor, the “Red Fox” of the mountain, and the Fleming brothers.

The tale will be told by Pam Halcomb, past president of the Kentucky Storytellers Association, on the 119th anniversary of Taylor’s hanging. The event is sponsored by the Pine Mountain Trail Conference.

Parking will be available at the junction of US 23 and Pottertown Road (VA 667). A shuttle will be provided to the trailhead for a short lanternlit walk to the site of the massacre. The event is free, but donations are appreciated.

Those attending should bring a flashlight, blanket and chair. For more information, call Shad Baker at 633-2362.
