Struttin’ Time

Better times will be coming soon

The days and months are going by like the lines on a highway, at 60 miles an hour.

I’m about to get myself back together again after suffering some setbacks in the last month. Like the old song says, if it wasn’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.

Well, we have bigger and better days ahead of us. Squirrel hunting season opens on the third Saturday in August. That is the time to rid yourself of the rust that has set in since turkey season. The bushy tails are everywhere. This is a great time to introduce our youth to the outdoors.

Our fall big game archery season (including turkey and deer) opens Sept. 5 and runs until mid- January 2010. Statewide is either sex. If you were one of the lucky ones to get an elk tag, put that on your list, too.

Modern firearms runs Nov. 7 until Nov. 22 in Zones 1 and 2. They are either sex. In Zone 3, Nov. 7 through Nov. 16, either sex. Then in zone 4, which is us here in Letcher County, our season will be Nov. 7 through Nov. 16, antlered deer only.

Muzzleloader season will run Oct. 17 and 18, either sex, except Zone 4 which will be antlered deer only. Also Zone 4, will have five days, Dec. 12 through Dec. 17, antlered only, but, will have either sex season Dec. 18 through the 20th.

I don’t mention crossbow season because those hunters have a permit and hunt during regular archery season.

The statewide youth firearm season will be Oct. 10 and 11. The Free Youth Weekend will be Dec. 26 and 27, either sex.

I will be missing the opening of archery season, as I will be hunting in Vermont for black bear.

Until we meet again, no matter the distance between two bodies, hearts and minds can be together. Give someone a smile, a hug, and a thank you along this journey we call life. You will be rewarded.
