Struttin’ Time

It’s hard to wait for fall season to open

Fall turkey season is right in our sights. I can’t wait, although I will. I spoke with two local hunters this past week in Whitesburg, and they are also ready.

I will be heading to Florida on August 14 to “gator” hunt with my longtime friend and outfitter Rick Poupore of Satsuma. Rick has been my guide for several years when I turkey hunt Florida. This time it is “gators” and will take some getting used to, I’m sure.

I don’t need to pack a firearm. We are using harpoons. No camo is needed. We will hunt at night and won’t need a ThermaCell, just a lot of bug spray. Now that I have announced to the world that I will be in Florida from the 14th thru the 17th, it will give the druggies a chance to plot to steal from me again. I welcome their attempt. They caught me off guard once (notice I said once).

As I have mentioned before, now is the time to get ready for opening morning. Don’t wait around until the last minute. Also, now is the time to get really great prices on new hunting gear. Remember, the price is not going to come down. Even if you don’t need something right now, you will sometime, so buy it and put it up.

I got several calls, e-mails, and people coming up to me laughing about me doing Gabby’s Fishing Fever, and him doing Struttin’ Time in last week’s Eagle (the editor mixed the headings up). I didn’t mind as long as Gabby didn’t. I thought it was cool.

Several people spoke to me about the Kids’ Day events, and some weren’t happy with my saying this might be the last year. One lady even gave me an order, “Steve, get ’er done”! Only time will tell, and let’s take it one year at the time. The next Kids’ Day event will be at Letcher on August 18.

I spoke with my friend Raymond “Pap” Brown in Whitesburg on July 27. He has cancelled his annual Fishing Day this year because he needs to have an operation and hasn’t figured out how to be in two places at once. Pap, you will be fine!
