There is another season that came along for me way before wild turkeys were huntable. I’m talking about the season we all started out with — squirrel season.
Did you know squirrel season is going on right now? Spring squirrel season was reintroduced back in the 1980s and goes almost unnoticed today. It runs from May 18 through June 21, and is a great way to spend time with your children.
Get them outside to see the night creatures go to bed, and the day creatures wake up. They will never forget it.
I was never good enough with a .22 to hunt squirrel with one, but for many that is the gun of choice. Look for them in the tree branches as they move from tree to tree hunting food. Their favorite foods — acorns, hickory, and beechnuts —are not ripe yet so they travel a lot this time of year.
Remember it is hot and muggy, so dress in light camo, and for sure take a Therma-CELL and plenty of mosquito spray.
It has been a while since anyone has sent me any stories on their spring squirrel hunt. Drop me a line. I’ll be glad to run them.
