Struttin’ Time

Taking the wife fishing was fun!

“Another child who has grown old.” Those words of John Prine ring truer each day.

I have just returned from a fishing trip with my lovely wife, Sharon. Who, besides someone who still thinks as a child, would go to Tennessee with the lake the highest it has been in 40 years, the temperatures in the 90’s, and no reports of any fish being caught?

Well, we went for a week, and all the above were true. I caught one bluegill about 10 inches. But as I remind you and myself all the time, hunting or fishing is about the life experience, not about the taking of game.

This was a wonderful trip, but if this old body of mine was an old house, lightning would have struck it years ago.

I love taking ya’ll along with me as we journey to different places together, and although this was a fishing trip I want to share some of the things that happened. I don’t regret one day the Struttin’ Time readers and I have spent together, and this trip is no different.

Well, it was off to the bait shop in Mooresburg, Tenn. Got there at 7 a.m., it didn’t open until 8 a.m. What happened to the days when bait shops were open 24/7?

Then the old man looked at me and said, “Son, are you crazy?” He was referring to the things I said at first. “Son,” he said, “I don’t sell enough minnows in July to carry them, but I do,” so bait taken care of.

By the time I got to the lake, they were almost all dead. Back to the bait shop, and this time I put them on ice.

It was a cool 88 degrees at 9 a.m. Found a school of crappie, couldn’t get them to bite, but I did get one bluegill. Make note, come back to this place this evening. Went back, already someone there fishing, although the only two boats on the lake were mine and his. He caught a few crappie, I went back in.

The next morning, I was thrown into the lake while putting the boat into the water, and then that evening I got bit by a tick and I am still paying the price. My leg is as big as a softball.

But it was all in fun, and I had a great trip.

What is the number for 911? I probably need to go to the hospital with this bite!
