Struttin’ Time

Don't put all your eggs in one basket

I don’t know many people who make as many stupid mistakes as I do.

I told my readers about putting all of my eggs in one basket by hoping to have my name drawn for the Kentucky elk hunt. That never happened.

By the way, I talked to my longtime friend, fellow hunter, and avid Struttin’ Time reader Johnny Adams in Jenkins recently. He is just one of the many hunters who believes the system for the elk hunting lottery needs to be changed to limit the number of non-residents who are drawn.

That way of thinking is spreading. Johnny told me that he has invested $40 every year — $10 for himself and the rest for his son and grandsons — and none of them have had their names drawn. I am reminded of an old friend of mine who applied every year, until his death, and was never drawn. He never lost faith.

The other part of my basket this year was filled with the Maine moose hunt, and the Michigan black bear hunt. The Michigan results won’t be in for a while, but the moose results are. I received the call at 9:25 p.m., Thursday, June 18, a day that will burn in my mind forever. I didn’t get drawn for the moose hunt, either.

Of more than 3,000 permits, only 62 could go to non-residents. The first thing I did was tie the window shade cord around my big toe, open the window and jump out in an attempt to break my neck for being so stupid as to think I would get a tag. Problem was I was on the ground floor, and you are supposed to put the cord around your neck. There I was, standing on the ground, with my big toe in a noose.

I don’t hold out much hope for the bear tag, although they have a point system and I have some points built up. This year while all my hunting buddies are doing cool things like hunting elk, bear, etc., I will be home thinking about what could have been. Oh well, there is still my trip to Vermont in August. And at least the rain has slowed down some.

Touch someone’s heart this week in a good way. Go out of your way to help a stranger. You will be a better person for it.
