Student attendance still low

Student attendance in the Letcher County School District continues to be lower than normal because of illness.

Kenneth Cornett, director of pupil personnel, said the district’s attendance rate from October 1 through November 5 was 87.9 percent.

“I think that is the lowest I can recall,” Cornett told the Letcher County Board of Education at its November meeting.

Cowan Elementary School had the highest school attendance rate in the district for that time period, with 90.8 percent.

“You can see why that would be a concern for us and why it is a concern for districts statewide,” said Cornett.

Letcher Schools Supt. Anna Craft has said previously that schools will be closed if attendance rates drop below 80 percent.
