Hemphill

Last week’s Fri Nite Pickin’ was a delight. We had a packed house and were joined by groups from Pittsburgh, Penn., and Milwaukee, Wisc. They were students who instead of having spring break had volunteered to come to these parts as part of an Appalachian service project. We want to thank them for their service and for their visit to our place. The home folks had a great time extending hospitality and dancing among them. We sincerely hope these high-energy new friends come back real soon as it was sure a pleasure having them with us.

Schedule of events:

Friday Nite Pickin’ March 24 at 7:30 p.m., The Right Fork Ramblers will be on hand to pick us some harddriving tunes and some high sweet lonesome tunes. These guys are just plain fabulous! They are multi-talented and their harmonies are close and tight. They are a marvel when it comes to showmanship and musicianship.

Jeff Kennedy is a guitar picker of great skill and John Moore picks the banjo wonderfully. Both John and Jeff are talented with the fiddle also and they change out on some songs. Anthony O’Quinne and Marcus Riley are favorites around our place as they are both a part of Cross Country Bluegrass as well. They have both been around for a while and are much beloved by all who are regular patrons of Friday Nite Pickin’. If you have not attended one of the fourth Friday of the month shows yet, you are missing out. We are loving them.

March 26, from 2 to 5 p.m., the monthly shape note singing in the do re mi tradition. This is an ancient art form. It will feed your soul’s need for creative expression. No experience necessary, no talent necessary, no church affiliation necessary! Come out and join us for this community effort to rebuild the singing culture in Hemphill, for which we were once well known. Please bring a snack to share and a dollar or two for a love offering for the facility. Coffee and water will be provided. All are welcome!
