Students compete in academic tourney

CHAMPIONS — Letcher Middle School finished in first place in the varsity division of the Letcher County Academic League tournament. Pictured are (top, left to right) Hope Maggard, Emily Morales, (bottom) Maxwell Bailey, Tyler Stacy and Ben Mason.

The Letcher County Academic League tournament was held Nov. 12-15 at Letcher Middle School. The schools involved in the tourney, which was sponsored by Community Trust Bank, were Arlie Boggs, Cowan, Fleming- Neon Middle, Martha Jane Potter, West Whitesburg, Whitesburg Middle, Letcher Elementary, Letcher Middle and Jenkins Elementary.

The overall winners of the varsity division were Letcher Middle in first, Arlie Boggs in second, Whitesburg Middle in third, and Cowan in fourth. The quick recall results were ABE first, LMS second, WMS third and Fleming-Neon Middle fourth.

The results for individual competitions were:

Social Studies — Ben Mason, LMS, first; Max Bailey, LMS, second; Alyassa Lawson, CES, third; Paul Fleming, WMS, fourth; Micayla Brashears, CES, fifth.

Math — Ben Mason, LMS, first; Tyler Stacy, LMS, second; Matt Jessey, FNMS, third; Treston Hughes, ABE, fourth; Journey Adams, CES, fifth.

Science — Treston Hughes, ABE, first; Max Bailey, LMS, second; Courtney Whitaker, WMS, third; Micayla Brashears, CES, fourth; Matt Jessey, FNMS, fifth.

The Whitesburg Middle School academic team placed first overall at the Letcher County Academic League Tournament. The WMS quick recall team also placed first. Pictured are Machayla Ashby, John Ison, Samantha Crawford, Sadie Bates and Abby Enfusse. Machayla placed fifth in English Composition. John placed second in Arts and Humanities. Sadie placed first in Language Arts and first in Math. Abby placed third in English Composition. Not pictured is Dalton McCown, who placed first in English Composition and first in Science.
