Summer reading program is scheduled at libraries

The theme of this year’s summer reading program at the Letcher County Public Libraries is “Be Creative @ Your Library.” The program will include activities, contests, prizes, storytelling, and arts and crafts demonstrations.

The event will begin with a kickoff celebration at 6:30 on June 18 at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library in Whitesburg featuring a magic show by magician Mark Comley.

The goals of the summer program is to motivate children to read, to develop positive attitudes about reading and books, and to enable children to maintain their reading skills during the summer vacation.

In addition to the magic show, other activities scheduled during the summer program include a visit by Tammy Elza of Kentucky Environmental Educational Company with odd and interesting animals; a dance performance by Tiffany Glover of the Dance Gallery; storytelling by Don Amburgey; and puppet shows by the librarians. At the end of the six weeks, each library will conclude the event with awards, a picnic, or outdoor activities.
