Summer Scrubs Camp held

Eight area students participated in this year’s Summer Scrubs Camp Program.

The Southeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in conjunction with Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College System recently hosted the camp, which was sponsored by Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital and Letcher Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility. This camp was held for high school students interested in pursuing a health care career.

Each day of the camp, students talked with, asked questions of, and observed healthcare professionals at work. They saw behind the scenes of the Whitesburg ARH Hospital and completed job shadowing in several departments.

The camp also included a variety of hands-on activities throughout the week. Dentistry professionals from the University of Kentucky Center for Rural Health visited with the students and allowed the students to practice giving oral shots on oranges. Students visited Letcher Manor, where they participated in a Sensitivity to Aging Program followed by a service learning project with the activities department.
