Summit City to host art exhibit

On Friday, January 9, at 7 p.m., Summit City in Whitesburg will host an art opening for Letcher County artist Jeff Chapman-Crane.

Chapman-Crane is an artist who resides in Eolia. His highly realistic paintings examine the Appalachian experience to expose the misconceptions and stereotypes that surround the mountain culture. Crane is a master portraitist and captures the dignity and complexity of his subjects. He paints with watercolor and gouache, as well as egg tempera.

With relatively little formal training, but innate talent, Chapman-Crane has won numerous awards for his painting. He has exhibited his work in galleries in New York as well as in Washington, D.C., California, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

Commenting on his paintings, he explains, “Light is the thread that runs through my painting. Not just sunlight, but shadows and variations of light. The quality of light and a real sense of it.” The rich character of various faces also attracts his attention.
