Suspect in wife’s death being released on bond

A 37-year-old Mayking man who was being held in connection with the March 14 death of his wife is being released on a “$50,000 full cash” bond after charges against him were referred to the Letcher County Grand Jury.

Letcher District Judge Kevin R. Mullins approved Roger R. Elswick’s motion to be released from the Letcher County Jail on Tuesday afternoon after Elswick waived his right to a preliminary hearing and agreed to have the grand jury consider the charges against him.

Police charged Elswick with first-degree wanton endangerment after the body of his wife, 35-year-old Connie Webb Elswick, was found lying in the narrow Cram Creek road, about 150 yards from the home the couple shared.

Letcher County Coroner Marty Baker listed the cause of death as blunt force head trauma pending the final results of tests performed during an autopsy in Frankfort.

More information will appear in the March 20th edition of The Mountain Eagle.
