Swappin’ Meetin’ to host storytelling competitions

The Kingdom Come Swappin’ Meetin’ held on the Cumberland campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College will be getting back to its roots in 2007 as it hosts Youth and Adult Storytelling Competitions. The Swappin’ Meetin’ originated in the 1960s as a “story-swappin'” festival.

On Oct. 5, the Youth Storytelling Competition will take place in three divisions – elementary (grades 1-4), middle school (grades 5-8), and high school (grades 9-12; high schoolers must be no older than 17 by Nov. 3). Each school is urged to send its top two storytellers in each division to compete. Winners in each division will advance to regional competition at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg on Oct. 29, with a chance to move on to national competition.

On Oct. 6, the Adult Storytelling Competition will take place with the winner crowned as “Swappin’ Meetin’ Master Story Swapper.”

Both competitions will follow the format, guidelines, and rules of the Kentucky Storytelling Association.
