If you want to go on a fun Saturday trip, buy one of the new “Letcher County Quilt Trail” books and drive around the county to see how many of the 115 painted barn quilts you can find.
You will see quilts at Deane, Eolia, Jenkins, Blackey, Cowan, Isom, Neon and Whitesburg. They are displayed on barns, homes, in yards, on commercial buildings — anywhere the owners choose to put them for their own enjoyment and for travelers to see.
The books are $10 each and are available for sale at Pine Mountain Craft Co-op, the Letcher County Extension Office, John B. Adams Store at Isom and Dr. David Narramore’s dental office in Whitesburg.
Barn quilts can now be found in approximately 14 states — from California in the west to Kentucky in the east. Kentucky was noted earlier this year as having more barn quilts than any other state. At least 36 Kentucky counties now have the quilts and, at the last listing, Letcher County may have the most with 115.
If you would like to have a barn quilt at your home, at your place of business, or in your community, you may call Ann Bradley at the Letcher County Extension Office at 633-2362 for more information and suggestions.
