Talking with Coach Matthews

In a conversation with sportswriter Derek Barto, Letcher County Central head football coach Junior Matthews shares his thoughts about last Friday’s loss to Pikeville and this Friday’s game with Hazard.

On last week’s game against Pikeville, Coach Matthews
said:
1. Credit has to go to Pikeville, “as they are very good
team and played a clean game and made no mistakes.”
2. “We still need to learn how to win and not miss opportunities when given to us.”
3. “We have to clean up the penalties. That is two
straight weeks with double-digit penalties.”
4. LCC’s “defense played really well and made them
sustain long drives and not give up big plays.”
5. “We didn’t do much to help ourselves on offense,
but Pikeville’s defense was impressive especially up

front.”

About the coming game against Hazard, Matthews
said:
1. “Hazard has a really big offensive and defensive line
so controlling both fronts will be a key to the game.”
2. Hazard “running back Corey Smith has averaged
over 200 yards per game thus far. He is a physical runner
with good speed and we must slow him down.”
3. Hazard’s “Bailey Blair is a dual threat quarterback
that can scramble and has a strong arm.”
4. “On defense, Hazard runs multiple fronts and we
must establish the run to be successful.”
5. LCC’s “offensive line play must improve this week.
We took a step back from the first game.”
6. “We have no major injuries to speak of which is
always good.”
