Teachers in favor of House Bill 540

To the Editor:

If you are a current or retired teacher and you want to keep your health insurance, then you need to call your State Senators and encourage them to pass House Bill 540.

This bill recently passed the Kentucky State House on March 17 and now heads to the Kentucky State Senate. This legislation would require more money from the school districts, active teachers, and retired teachers under 65 to be paid into the retired teacher health insurance fund. (Currently, only active teachers, retired teachers under 65, and the state pay into the system.)

This bill was written to help reduce the unfunded liability in the retired teachers’ health fun that is currently being funded by the state by borrowing from the Kentucky Teachers’ Retirement System. That method of payment could not be sustained over time.

So, if you want to ensure the future of your health insurance benefits, please call your Senator or any other Senators you know and urge them to vote for this bill. The legislative message line in 1-800-372-7181. They now have a real person answering this line!
