TECO Coal Company continues to be one of Letcher County’s leading corporate citizens.

At the request of District Five Magistrate Wayne Fleming, the Tampa, Fla.-based energy company donated $3,000 to help furnish the Letcher County Health Department building on Main Street in Whitesburg.

“They have been awfully good to help us,” said Fleming. “They have never turned me down when I have asked for help.”

Fleming, who is a member of the health department board of directors, said the board needs more large coal and natural gas companies to donate money to the health department.

“This is just the start and hopefully it will encourage others to do the same,” said Fleming. “I think other companies will jump on board.

TECO employs many Letcher County workers at its Premier-Elkhorn Coal Company in Myra and Perry County Coal Company in Hazard. The company also owns and operates the Raven Rock Golf Course at Jenkins.
