With the troubled economy continuing in Letcher County, a Jeremiah teenager is helping girls her age find dresses to wear to prom for the second year in a row.
Courtney Jackson, a senior at Letcher County Central High School, distributed 115 semiformal and formal dresses last March to girls in Letcher and Harlan counties to wear to prom or for other special occasions.
Courtney Jackson’s mother, Daisy Jackson, said the need for prom dresses seems to grow daily.
Courtney Jackson has collected 26 dresses since January and is trying to gather more before she hosts a dress give-away from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, at the Blackey Community Center.
The event is on a first come, first serve basis. Courtney Jackson said any female wanting to attend prom or an eighth-grade dance is welcome to pick out a dress. Girls must attend the give-away to make sure the dresses fit the recipients.
Drop off dresses, shoes, jewelry, purses and other items to The Mountain Eagle office, located at 41 North Webb Street, Whitesburg.
