I think having food stamp recipients take a drug test does not make any sense at all. For one thing it will cause more robberies and break-ins, because people are not going to see their children starve. And considering the cost to drug test the recipients, that money would feed a whole lot of children. What do they want to do, send more money overseas? Well, I am all against it. I don’t use food stamps, but I see where it could hurt a lot of children.

Get the governor’s attention by initiating a petition protesting the criminal action of Kentucky Power Company. Members of the Public Service Commission have closed their doors and their minds to needs of the ratepayers. Attempt to get 1,000 to 1,500 signatures, along with a statement of facts concerning the 31 percent increases. Enter a list of demands such as: How much money does Kentucky Power spend on lobbying the PSC? Is money spent tacked on your electric bill? Request Jack Conway to investigate the rate increase for possible wrongdoings. Remember, the responsibility of PCS decisions lies with Governor Beshear. And the elections are coming soon.

.

To the person who put the reference is Speak Your Piece about ‘over at our tree’: Could you be more specific? I was wondering if this I about a friend I used to know.

.

I had a friend who had family member die. They brought her in from Ohio and we had the funeral January 10 and buried her at Green Acres Cemetery. I felt so sorry for these people. They had to carry their relative through garbage at the center of the cemetery to get her to a grave. It was already bad weather and muddy. I don’t know who is over that cemetery now, but something definitely needs to be done. It is a shame and a disgrace to see the garbage that is piled up. If you have a relative there, somebody needs to contact whoever is over that. This situation needs to be addressed. This is just so sad. You have to respect the dead.

.

A certain man is now working at a gas station and drawing an SSI check at the same time. That means he can pay what he owes for the car he stole from me. I will see him in court. He thinks he can get by with what he did, but he is fooling with the wrong person this time and he knows who I am.

.

I think the Letcher County Board of Education should be ashamed for trying to make the Cowan eighth-graders raise $1,500 each just to go to Virginia Beach and the Busch Garden theme park. What is it, about a six-hour drive? I don’t see how a trip like that can cost the children and parents that much money.

.

I wonder how many people it takes to write the President’s address to the nation. I know probably 100 or more are involved in it and I would like to know if anybody knows who wrote Kennedy’s famous words, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country’.

(President John F. Kennedy’s famous 1961 inaugural speech was written by Kennedy in collaboration with speechwriter Theodore C. Sorensen, who died at age 82 on October 31, 2010.)

.

I was listening to Wiley’s Wild Weekend Program Saturday when he read the Whitesburg High School news of the past. I thought I was the only one who read this column. By the way, I’m not from Letcher County and have never seen the old Whitesburg High School, but I still enjoy reading the synopsis of past events there.

.

Mr. Obama, I listened to your state of the union speech and I thought it was a joke. You talk about giving the children a higher education and one school system I know of has to cut $100 million from its budget. That’s something to think about. It sounded pretty good, but you reminded me of a chicken scratching. You did a lot of scratching, but there was no dirt flying. I don’t think there is anybody back there.

.

To the good looking man with the long ponytail in Knott County: We talked at the Dollar Store for a while and I enjoyed that. We need to get together again and have some fun. You need to dump that Tennessee gal. Baby, she’s not for you. I can show you what a real woman can do. Maybe we can get together and have a good time. I promise. I hope I can see you again this weekend. Good luck.

.

Most people are unaware that drinking mine water runoff can cause type 2 diabetes. Everyone wants to blame school lunches and McDonald’s food for type 2 diabetes, which is sometimes caused by heavy metals in their drinking water. The old expression ‘it’s in the water’ is sometimes all too true.

.

I’ve got a comment to make about the Letcher County Fiscal Court. I have supported Jim Ward ever since he first ran for county judge, but I’m telling you I am really disappointed with all they are doing for Jenkins and Whitesburg while they’re not even pretending to help any of the rest of the county such as Deane, Linefork, and Blackey. Ferus Corporation donated money and every single penny of it went to Jenkins. There is a whole county out here. Everything you have coming and going is going straight to Jenkins, and I don’t think that is quite fair. I think the rest of the county should have help with community centers for our children and many other things. I don’t like the idea of Jenkins and Whitesburg being the whole county. We have a lot of other places in Letcher County that need things too.

(Keep in mind that Jenkins is the home of the new nitrogen factory being built by Ferus.)

I think it is a shame the grand jury orders a man free from drugs charges after he has been caught with three ounces of cocaine. I know a man that got charged with disorderly conduct and he has already had three months of drug testing and now they are talking about hanging him. I think this county is rotten.

(According to the grand jury, the charges were dismissed because the case has developed into a federal investigation.)

.

Kentucky Power Company, the courthouse, the sheriff ’s office, city hall and Whitesburg hospital are all in it together. It is all about the big money.

.

I think it is a shame that an elected official, one of the magistrates, doesn’t have the decency to take his cap off while he is in a fiscal court meeting. If he can’t do any better than that, we will have to find someone better come the next election. And you know whom I am talking about.

.

I read the part in The Mountain Eagle where it said police are charging to open your car. I just wonder who is paying the policeman to open the car in the first place. Who is paying the policeman’s salary?

.

Could someone please explain to me why Letcher Elementary School has been going to school 50 minutes extra a week than West Whitesburg Elementary School and Letcher County Central High School? It was added this year but no one has told our kids or parents why. I would just like to know why they start earlier five minutes and are out later five minutes.

.

This is to the little guy with the so- called band and the so-called karaoke: You have screamed boycott many times. Well, guess what? There are about 30 or 40 people in the front of the bar and two people in the back. I guess you really know the meaning of the word now, honey. You have a good week. Maybe your band will make $10 this week.

.

I’m just now reading The Mountain Eagle and surely I’m not reading it right. It says the charges were dropped against a certain person. As much as they found on him, how could they do that? Judge Wright, surely you didn’t have something to do with this. I have always respected you in the highest. Now I am beginning to wonder. If a teenager is caught with drugs, you throw the book at them. What kind of world are we living in? I am so ashamed that I had feelings for these people.

(As was pointed out elsewhere in this column, the grand jury made its decision not to indict — contained in a ‘no true bill’ — because the case is now in the hands of federal investigators.)

.

I just wanted everyone to know how proud I am of our new District One magistrate. Instead of voting for something that might get drinking water to the people on Cumberland River, he votes for a resolution that might cause a tax increase for Letcher County to pay for a recreation center in Whitesburg that maybe three-percent of the people on this side of the mountain may ever use. A good magistrate would not vote for a potential tax increase for a non-essential service. What about the people on fixed incomes that already struggle with bills? Remember our last magistrate? He was more interested in the City of Whitesburg also. I will not vote for you again.

.

We have got the sorriest sheriff ’s department I have ever seen. They want your money, but they don’t want to serve warrants that you get on people. If they would get out and do their jobs, there wouldn’t be so much crime going on.

.

We would like to thank Terry Adams and Wayne Fleming for voting no on putting this recreation center above everything else. I thought this was a bad idea from the start. It’s a bad location with nowhere to park. And once it is built, look at what it will cost to keep it up. I would like to make a suggestion. Let’s let the judge and the two magistrates that voted for it pay for it.

.

When the tax cuts for the very wealthy were about to expire, there was crying, screaming and hollering. The Obama tax cut of $250 for each working person went quietly into the history. Why do working people have to pay as much taxes as rich people when they work for less?

.

Well, they put a certain man in jail for dope dealing, but someone else has taken over the business at Jeremiah and has shipments coming in about every other day. If you need any pills, it’s still going on in Jeremiah. The law took one, but the dealing continues.

.

To you people in Jenkins: Do you miss the ex-mayor as much as I do? He always had a book that he read at each meeting instead of talking like we ordinarily do. I still like Mr. Dixon.

.

I was just wondering if LCC pays the board members for each meeting that attend locally or out of state and anywhere else they travel and their other expenses. I know Jenkins does.

.

To all of you people who have family members buried at Green Acres Cemetery: Have you seen the condition of that cemetery? The flagpoles are bent over. The garbage has been there since last summer. The shrubbery has buried the Bible that is in the center of that cemetery. You can hardly see it. The garbage is garbage, garbage, garbage.

.

I do not believe that anyone was pulled over by a policeman in Letcher County and was raped. I do not believe it.

.

I would like to know how certain man got out of his drug charges of cocaine, pot and gun. The judge dismissed it on him. I’d like to know what is going on when these people are in jail for smoking one joint. A lot of people want to know about this and I do, too.

(Please see earlier comments about this matter.)

.

Hey, electric company. I want my money back. You can have your electricity back. Let’s trade out because this is downright stupid. My bill for two months is $400. I only get $655 on disability, so what am I supposed to do about the rest of my bills? So just go ahead and take your electricity back. I will use my coal and wood-burning stove, and you can have all of my electricity. I can heat that way. I can cook that way. I don’t need you. I don’t need the electric company. Give me my money back and I will give you your electricity back.

.

The Mountain Eagle said the grand jury ordered a man freed from drug charges. The man, according to The Mountain Eagle, was mixed up in cocaine, Xanax, hydrocodone, $1,840 cash and a .38 caliber handgun. And the grand jury sets this man free? There are people going around here with misdemeanors getting more time than that. Come on. What is the man’s connection? Let us all go his route. May the Lord keep blessing him.

(Last week’s Mountain Eagle report about the grand jury’s decision not to indict included a paragraph which said the case is ‘being referred to federal authorities’ for further action.)

.

< b> It’s been 50 years since I was five years old and I have lived in this hollow. Now we have a neighbor who can’t seem to keep her mouth shut or quit causing trouble for everyone. I can’t even have a physical therapy horse now for my hips. Let me tell you what I would like to do to her. I would like to take pliers and pull her fingernails off and then feed them to her if she doesn’t quit staring into my windows at night with her binoculars. I went and got out my night vision binoculars and I can see into every room in her house. I am tired of them standing at their window. I can’t even sit in my window where the heater is because they are staring at me. I’d like to put a total stop to all of this so I am going to go home before I do end up hurting someone.

.

When the news media covered eastern Kentucky toothless people they where quick to blame Mountain Dew and Pepsi. They didn’t have guts enough to say the water at the intake for public water had as much acid as the Mountain Dew.

.

I just wanted to let my Aunt Dorothy, Uncle Jack and Don know I love them so very much and I ask God to bless them all the time. Hopefully I will be home soon.

.

Someone needs to tell certain city police officer this isn’t Detroit and he sure isn’t Ted Nugent.

.

I would like to say that Letcher County Schools need to start using delays again. There have been days like Monday, January 24, where a delay would have worked. The majority of the other districts use them, and we should too. Not using delays only takes up more of our summer. We could have four different two-hour delays and only have to make up one day. But no, our school board would rather add four days at the end of the year. Come on, Board of Education, think of what is best for the students, and not just your pockets.

(If this weather pattern continues, it might be best if the Letcher County and Jenkins school systems take a longer winter break and call off school for all of January.)

.

To the politically correct person who wants a debate about pastors: Did you forget about Harold Kineer? He was and still is a good pastor. Actually, I was referring to the new church. Bill Craft has been pastor up there a couple of decades ago or more. That was the point I was trying to prove — that he is still there. How about that? Have a nice day now, you hear.
